Misc Week of July 6th Fireside Chat

Neither here nor there.
This weeks chat is the "I'm melting from this heat" version so backing away from the fire just a wee bit and am adding more fans to my studio.

I haven't been up to much today other than making labels, taking inventory, and packing stuff up to hang a solo show at a church in Des Moines tomorrow, for the month of July. That and trying to figure out what to cook in this horrible heat that takes minimal work. OC dug out another fan for me, no AC or CA here in our house, so I may be able to start stitching come Monday.

How do you guys cope with this heat and humidity when it comes to stitching and crafting?

Summer knitting, even wool doesn't bother me. Beats yard work and house work. Both badly need doing right now, and BF will be returning home tomorrow after visiting family. But, dang...it is TOO DAMN HOT! My feet and ankles swell in the heat (regardless, apparently, of what I do or don't eat). Right now, they look like tree stumps, and I can feel the pressure under the skin, and between the toes. Fall can't come soon enough.

Do you eat cucumbers and/or watermelon? They seem to help with my feet swelling. I'm wanting to do some hand stitching but am afraid I'll sweat all over everything, not to mention my hands are sticky right now. Maybe I'll make that new necklace instead. Hobby Lobby had beads, pearl cotton, and crochet thread, on sale yesterday 50% off so I stocked up. I guess that sale ends today. I've discovered a new pearl cotton called Lizbeth, tatters love the stuff, I'm finally able to make a coil stitch for the first time in my life, it's a much nicer thread and HL carries it in several colors here locally.

On TB every waking moment
It is in the high 80s here with no humidity and a breeze. Of course we have central air conditioning so it is always comfortable.

I am finishing up basting all my quilt sandwiches. I need to catch up on Natalia Bonner's quilting ruler work class on Youtube. I am just using a 44 inch square "sandwich" marked in 5X5 6" squares rather than buy the quilt top she uses. She is on the 30th design, which is a circle. Classes are free on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMpBFEQD524 You need a ruler foot (a must,) and rulers to do the class. Set up otherwise as for free motion quilting.

I got my fabric so will be working on the shoulder strap messenger style computer bag for my daughter this month. (She is a school teacher and will be teaching Jr. High English this year.) I got a kit and a class on https://www.mybluprint.com/ which is a subscription site . The kit fabric is purples, blues and greens, not my daughter's colors so I bought other fabric. The package gave the designer's site as https://www.byannie.com/ for patterns and notions.

I walked into our local quilt shop just looking for a place to cool off a bit. It's truly unreal how hot it is...I know for some of you 80s doesn't sound like much, but the sun is very intense and we really are not used to seeing this kind of heat hang on...usually get a day or two every couple of years. This week highs have been 80, 82, 84, now 86. And of course no AC! :) Well, I did walk out with a fun new pattern and I might start cutting in the evening, when it drops down to merely sweltering ;) Not really as whiny as I sound - besides, my garden is amazing this year...way ahead of the norm for growth!

Week of July 6?

I'm ok with that if it gets us closer to Fall. I just feel like **** in this heat.

One thing I really wanted to get accomplished while I had some time this week to focus on it was to start an indigo vat. I have all the ingredients (I think...somewhere), just have to get the recipe together, and order some natural white yarn while waiting for the fermentation magic to get going. Going on several consecutive summers now, I always vow to get one started during warm weather, but at this point it really doesn't matter. I have spare heat mats and temp regulators (reptiles), so one can be made in the middle of winter, if necessary. Indigo fascinates me; there is just something special about THOSE blues.

No time for it tomorrow; maybe in a few days is things cool down to a tolerable level.

We are low-carb (I have to be), but I'll try the cucumbers. I'll keep an eye out for that crochet thread. Have several balls of various thicknesses from when I was learning Irish crochet lace. Fabulously gorgeous, but I really don't have the eyesight for it, and crochet cramps my hands. However, I've found the threads have lots of uses. Know what you mean about sweat staining cotton fabric. I brought out my 90% finished quilt in Irish Chain pattern to show some guys (who appreciate hand crafts) from Ireland who were here last week. Anyway, I finally figured what I wanted to for quilting the border strip (about all on it that is left to do), I've spent more time trying to figure out and draft pretty hand-stitch patterns for the quilting than I have actually spent sewing on it (I tend to pull the thing out, and stare at it endlessly, make some tentative graph designs for the quilting, and then STILL can't decide.) The quilt was started and mostly finished almost ten years ago. But, yeah. It's just too sticky and I'm too sweaty right now, and I don't want to stain it. Plans to make another Irish Chain (slightly more complicated pattern) in blue and white once this one is finished. Plenty of other lovely quilt block patterns out there, but I just can never get enough of the squares set in diagonal rows.

Taking a break from other crafts and spinning some of the wool I got (and some of it I won in a raffle) in Washington State last week, I'm also sorting out linen to make new Norse Garb next weekend (or at least getting it cut out) at our SCA sewing day - I'm not sure how much I can get made before an event in two weeks time but I need things that are smaller.

Early period garb is pretty forgiving as long as it is wide enough (you can just belt it in) but being short the stuff I made 25 pounds ago is getting pretty baggy.

I found CBD oil helps with swelling if it is legal where you live, having swollen feet is both uncomfortable and a bit scary (at least to me when it happened a few years ago).

Oh yes!! My breeding program is really starting to produce the micron counts we have been aiming for! I had two ewes test at 14.9 and 17.1. We raise Merino's.

Hope you and your sheep enjoy the new place!
Keep me in mind for fleece and roving, when you have some to sell.
