What the hell is Trump thinking?

I'm a big supporter of his but this makes no sense to me at all. I think he dropped the ball on this one. Border security was the reason he was elected and to his credit he has pushed for it all along. But now? In the last few days he has gone from threats to close the border to now saying he will give Mexico a year to stop illegals from entering the US. I'm calling BS on this one. Why a year? Is he listening to bad advice from his advisors or does he think a year from now he can make it a big deal once again in the 2020 election? He doesn't say what action he will take if Mexico doesn't take care of the problem in a year (which everyone knows they won't) and I sadly suspect he will once again do nothing. This BS could cost him the election.

Instead of closing the border agents have been reassigned and it's creating a bottleneck of trucks entering the US from mexico, wait times are over 12 hours or more at some and miles long, now businesses are beginning to scream about getting something done. Congress may do something when the big donors scream.

He is controlled, compromised, but Israel is great again and all talk of indicting jr. is gone. Most of the cool-aid drinkers will never see it. I voted for him but saw early on this guy does not have what it takes to swing the big potus stick that could have saved the nation. The nation is gone and get ready to be flooded just like the walking dead from every kind of effin filth soreass can buy a ticket for to flood your neighborhood, congo, haiti, china, russia, all of south america. Folks what we have going on is the North America Union, open borders. DJT has capitulated.

True ^^

And he has totally failed every person who voted for him.
All the Trump voters can say at this point? "Well, he's better than Hellery."

It's not all about the companies and big donors. It's also about making sure Americans have what they need to get by at prices they can afford.

The collateral damages caused by NAFTA did not suddenly totally disappear over night when President Trump renegotiated it. A lot of US companies that moved manufacturing and production south to take advantage of cheaper labor, taxes, less government regulation, over sight, subjective inspections, intrusion, general stupidity, etc have not moved back. A lot of manufacturing and food production for the US comes in via the southern border. I believe those companies will probably stay there as long as it's profitable or until they no longer fear control and wealth redistribution efforts from the US socialist politicians.

Trump has to maintain a balance. He can't allow JIT to fall over, shortages to occur or prices to hike especially on food, at least not for long. I have a sneaking suspicion the central valley in California is nowhere near it's maximum food production. The fruit and nut orchards that died there due lack of water will take time, capitol, effort and water to replace. Mexico is helping to make up for the lack of food, fruit, veg and nuts that it used to supply.

I'm planning a bigger garden this year and planting earlier.

As far as I'm concerned, I agree. Trump needs to stop and think, before he shoots his mouth off about promises he can't keep. Too many times, he's done it. I can't trust a person who doesn't keep their word.

One year, and it will be too close to his possible re-election to make any significant changes.

He's blowing smoke up the Tea Party's ass.

How many times do you people need to be told that we don't live in a dictatorship?

No, we don't. Someone, though, needs to tell Trump to shut up, until he knows for sure what TPTB are gonna allow him to do. He can't keep throwing out empty promises that he can't keep. It's costing him votes.

I heard it was a year to stop the drugs and if not then tariffs applied to all vehicles made in Mexico entering US. And Mexico would stop the Illegals coming through starting now.

Mexico stopped 2500 illegals coming into Mexico (who would not then come to USA) in 4 days, so just saying the threat that he will close the border has had an impact - Mexico now knows he isn't kidding (as he said).

Until Congress changes the rules on immigration, he can only cobble bits and pieces together to give a message to the would-be entrants, that it will not be as easy to come north.

And if you don't eat fresh food from MX, or plan on buying a car partially built in MX, you probably are in favor of shutting the whole thing down. Corporate America, and particularly the border states will be hurt economically, by shutting the border, but they also would benefit with fewer Illegals coming in and getting State benefits/schooling/hospital etc. It might be a wash when they examine the costs.

We should be pulling active duty troops from other countries and stationing them on the border.

Militarize our southern border!

Trump confirms he nixed ICE director nomination, says he wants to go ‘in a tougher direction’

Trump confirms he nixed ICE director nomination, says he wants to go ‘in a tougher direction’
Adam Shaw
4-5 minutes

President Trump on Friday confirmed that he has pulled the nomination of his pick to lead Immigration and Customs Enforcement, saying the administration will “go in a tougher direction” -- as he heads to the border for a roundtable with law enforcement officials.

“Ron’s a good man, but we’re going in a tougher direction, we want to go in a tougher direction,” he said.

The Associated Press reported Thursday that the White House had withdrawn the nomination of current Deputy Director Ron Vitiello, and that the decision was unexpected and met with confusion by lawmakers. Vitiello had been expected to travel with Trump to Calexico, California, where the president is holding a roundtable discussion with law enforcement and visiting parts of the border wall.

A Homeland Security official had said it was a paperwork error, but other officials said it did not appear to be a mistake and on Friday Trump confirmed that he had been withdrawn completely and the administration would pick someone else.

The nomination requires Senate confirmation. Vitiello, who has been a law enforcement agent for more than 30 years, including with Border Patrol, had cleared one committee and was being considered by a second. He will remain as deputy director of the agency.

ICE has been at the center of much of the political controversy surrounding the enforcement of laws related to immigration enforcement. Some Democrats, including a number of 2020 hopefuls, have called for the agency to be either abolished or restructured entirely.

The administration in turn has rallied to ICE’s defense, saying it plays a central role in keeping Americans safe from drugs and criminal migrants.

The confusion over Vitiello’s nomination comes as the administration is scrambling to deal with a surge of migrants coming across the border. Officials said last week the U.S. was on track to apprehend more than 100,000 border crossers in March -- marking a 12-year high.

The administration has repeatedly called the situation a crisis, and the president in February declared a national emergency at the border. Trump has blamed Congress for not changing “loopholes” in immigration laws that allow migrants to be released into the U.S. while awaiting their court cases, and has rallied against Mexico for not doing enough to stop migration flows north.

Last week he threatened to close the border entirely if Mexico did not increase its efforts, but backed off that threat on Thursday, giving them a “one-year warning” and threatening tariffs instead.

On Friday he said that Mexico has done more to prevent illegal immigration in the last four days, but repeated his warning that he is considering either closing the border or slapping tariffs on cars coming from the country.

“I never changed my mind, I may shut it down at some point, but I’d rather do tariffs. Mexico, I have to say has been very very good over the last four days...if they continue that everything will be fine, if they don’t we’re going to tariff cars at 25 percent coming into the United States,” he said.

He also said he was considering separate economic penalties over drugs “coming in through the southern border and killing our people” although he did not specify what those penalties would be.

Responding to reporters’ questions, he also said would again not be attending the White House Correspondents' Dinner this year, saying he would hold a rally instead -- and that he was considering about three locations for the event.

“The dinner is so boring and so negative that we’re going to hold a very positive rally,” he said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

I'm starting to agree with Tucker Carlson. I'm thinking he wants to lose.

He's been nothing but all talk and bluster lately.

The govt shutdown and backing down was a big black eye. The NO wall and not shutting the border is a disaster is turning into an Epic invasion like the Walking Dead.
(We need about 100 Darryl's at the border with endless supplies of arrows.)

It's just depressing watching our country crash and burn.

I don't believe President Trump is caving on his border promises...he's in a tough spot with no help from Congress and outdated immigration laws. He's going to have to be smart about this and get all of his lawyers busy. Plus he needs strong ICE and DHS leadership. He knows this. I wonder if he'll replace that DHS secretary....he needs someone smart, creative, and a tough bulldog.

Talk is cheap
...and the obamacare thing being left until after the election, Trump said...yeah, saw it on msm news...link:

Donald Trump says replacing Obamacare can wait until after 2020 election

Just last week the president had seemed to go all in on a new effort to repeal Obamacare.

Washington: President Donald Trump said Republicans would wait until after the 2020 election to hold a vote on a replacement for Obamacare, abruptly halting a push he began just last week and guaranteeing that the issue will take center stage in his re-election campaign.

Trump has the power to close the border. I never heard a Dem say that he did not have that power. Trump set it up by declaring that "emergency" on the border. Yet he is not closing the border and instead he is allowing many thousands (maybe tens of thousands) to cross our border EVERY DAY.
The time for talk is long past. Yet that is all we get is talk.

I think he is caught between the rock and hard place. I think the tariffs may be a better idea that shutting down the border at this point. When I went shopping Tuesday I was really surprised at the lack of produce at the store. So many empty or near empty bins that are usually chocked full. I have never seen it that bad. It will be much worse if he closes the border and many people will be screaming. He can't get congress to do shit about the immigration laws and border enforcement. His best bet is to get Mexico to stop the illegals from crossing. I think that he also has to stop illegals from getting welfare, education, health care and other free benefits. He should also crack down on the employers and people who rent to them or allow them to buy houses. We shouldn't be welcoming them with free stuff and a way to live easily here.

On TB every waking moment
I think this run he needs donor funding and won't dip into his personal wealth again. Big donors are neocons and want cheap labor and war.

If you actually listened to Trump, he says he's giving Mexico a year to stop the illegal drugs coming across the border or he will install sanctions and high fees on cars and trucks assembled in Mexico exported to the US. Illegal immigration is a completely different matter. Active listening is a great tool for people judging politicians.

And I'm going to do just that. Starting next week.

Seems like I heard that somewhere before...…

O yeah when Trump said he would close the border...…..next week. I heard him say it and I was paying attention. Other wise I would have no comment.

No, action from Congress needed. 3 other Presidents have closed the border. But don't you worry, it will happen, next week.
