Misc/Chat Winter Garden Prep

Neither here nor there.
For those of you in the northern states what all do you do for winter garden prep? I'm going to plant garlic sometime this week, and need to get straw for my leeks.

I've got a young buck coming to help me raise my beds higher in the greenhouse and add more soil, compost and wood chips. Then I'll plant some more root crops and transplanting a few things too. I figure I'll have till the 30th to get it done. I will be planting garlic in there as well as outside but outside I wait until Columbus day for my area. It's constant chores right now with just getting all the wood done for the winter months and still canning and preserving. My countertop is still full of apples, pears and zuccini's. I'm slowing down here now and I need a real break soon!!! The tomatoes this year did me in. lol

lots of peeps don't care about this at all and sometimes the weather can throw me off, but IF you plant by the signs, root crops go in between the full moon and last quarter. next best time for that will be October 10-12.

I do go by the signs Raggedyman but I also use this moon calendar...

It says the 20th thru the 23rd were good days for root crops as is the 30th and 1st & 2nd of Oct. Check out the small root veggie below the days and the green bar is the time for transplanting. I use both calendars as it seems to give me an expanded choice to do my planning. I'm glad to see you know about it, awesome!

WOW Vicki!!!
bookmarked this for later use - gotta run out and help a neighbor lady move. I will dive into this and figure out the specifics later but it is very obviously way better than what I've been using.

THANKS SO MUCH for this site! :D

You're welcome Packy. I've been using that calendar for years and it's amazing how cutting one's hair on the favorable days really does work out well and on the off days does not. The veggies were the bonus for me. I'm waiting till the 24th to make my zuccini bread so I'll let ya know how that works out. :) .
