I want to try winter gardening this year for Southern Oregon Zone 9. Does anyone have a favorite book to recommend? Dont know much about cold frames vs green houses vs tunnels etc? I am currently using the rain gutter grow system and raised beds. Trying to decide how best to extend my seasons
Thanks!

I don't have any idea about your area but right now I've put out collard greens and lettuce. next week will be broccoli/cauliflower/cabbage and turnips. I am going to try and keep lettuce going as long as I can this year in the little greenhouse we bought. Just have to figure out something to grow it in.

"Four Season Harvest" by Eliot Coleman. I think that's the correct author. He lives in Maine and grows edibles year round in his green house (IIRC it's unheated)

I'll second "Four Season Harvest"! And yes, it's Coleman. He also has another book specifically about winter gardening, "The Winter Harvest Handbook". Both are excellent and easy reads!

I really like Four Season Harvest, but in your climate much of the information would not apply as Eliot is in Maine with a much harsher climate.

Here is a book on Amazon that would be more applicable to your situation:

I have not seen this book and it has mixed reviews, but perhaps you may find it at your local bookstore or your local library to peruse prior to purchase.

Another source of info for the PNW is the following blog: http://matronofhusbandry.wordpress.com/

The best resource I have found for info on area specific gardening is our local county extension office. They should be able to give you information and written handouts on what plants will thrive in your zone, as well as seasonal planting information that would be hard to find in a published book. Ours also offers numerous informational classes for free or almost free that correspond with the planting seasons.
