CORONA What are you stocking up on for corona virus?

Since I don't have a cow for fresh milk and butter, I'd already decided to try your recipe with soured milk. My mom used to do this a lot when I was a kid. Dad was the only one who liked buttermilk so she rarely had it around.

I once heard a comedian say of buttermilk, "It's not that it tastes so bad...it's how it makes the glass look when you're done drinking it!"

Soured milk makes fine biscuits, pancakes, and waffles. I'm sure it would work just as well in the soda bread.

Whatever food preps you have, keep in mind there "might" not be workers manning the grid utilities so cooking could be curtailed to brown-outs or complete failure. That means there'll be no cooking unless you have a camp stove/wood, etc. and even that would only be as long as your fuel lasts.

Store ready-to-eat canned foods such as old fashioned beef stew, chili, soups, etc. to keep on hand. It may have to be eaten cold but at least it will fill a belly.

For anyone who has not bought a solar oven, I would highly recommend one. Though I do not use mine in the winter (though I could), during the rest of year I use it all the time. I would rather use the solar oven than my regular oven.
I got mine from Safecastle.

I had wanted to get a solar oven, but when I saw how much more often the weather has been cloudy lately, and in my experience, getting worse, I decided a rocket stove would be a better way to go. There is ALWAYS lots of deadfall in and around my yard, more than enough to use a rocket stove.

An armed gang in Hong Kong stole hundreds of toilet rolls in a robbery sparked by coronavirus fears.

“A delivery man was threatened by three knife-wielding men who took toilet paper worth more than HK$1,000 (£100),” a police spokesman said.

Police arrested two men and are hunting for a third.

The robbery comes amid supply shortages in Hong Kong as the coronavirus outbreak continues to spread.

The virus, also known as Covid-19, has infected more than 71,000 people globally, with 57 confirmed cases in Hong Kong. One person has died of the virus in the city - one of only five deaths outside mainland China.

Earlier this month, in an attempt to limit the spread of the virus, the Hong Kong government announced it would close some borders with mainland China - sparking fears that supply chains from China would be cut off.

People rushed to supermarkets to load up on supposedly endangered goods such as toilet paper rolls, rice, hand sanitiser, and other cleaning products, according to CNN reports.

Online videos show crowds of people at supermarkets across the city battling to buy toilet rolls, despite government assurances that no shortage exists.

Many supermarkets have sold out of toilet rolls, food staples, and other crucial goods.

The toilet roll crisis sparked controversy in Hong Kong. After photos circulated on social media of residents hoarding multiple packs, some accused the panic buyers of unnecessarily creating chaos and confusion.

The Hong Kong government condemned "rumour mongers with evil intentions" for sparking the panic. Government measures against the coronavirus outbreak, like travel restrictions and border closures, "will not affect the freight services between the mainland and Hong Kong," it said in a statement.

It added: "There is no need for the public to worry.”

Senior NHS figures warned on Sunday that “millions” of people in the UK could be ordered to “self-isolate” by staying at home for a fortnight if the number of coronavirus cases continues to rise.
Just checked mine. 78 rolls. Over six months.

I had a really weird dream last night. But the crux of it was this is it and we need to be stocked. I was with neighbors and suddenly hundreds of military planes and helicopters were flying over. We moved inside and wondered what was up when someone came in and said, "They're at the border!". Someone else ran in and said it's already nuts out there. I said what about the grocery stores. He said, "No way!" meaning don't go. In my head (in the dream) I started thinking about what I had to make do with.

I have already been adding to my stock but will be adding more this weekend. The vegan DD may have to loosen up a bit but we are in decent shape and could last for a while.

I really want a couple cases of fresh MRE's . I know the cost vs value ration compared to other foods are way off but I like having them for hand outs and while I'm out and about. Super easy to grab, and use. If I had to bail a few days I would want an MRE or the main entree. The epicenter has great price anyone have a source for quality/fresh MRE's at good price?
Depending on where you're at..Winco sells the main for 2.50 a pop and have an ok variety, they also have a variety of Freeze dried foods in #10 and #2 1/2 cans

Extra HVAC filters for those of us who use them. 3M lost their China production, as we all know, and if they ever get up and running again, medical masks will be their priority.

And, of course, buy the ones with the highest rated performance.
Never even thought of engine filters and the like coming in from China.

thank you. but thats a automotive one, reading the specs, its good for + or - 4 degrees
I have one and it consistently reads low by about 4 degrees but the number varies each time I activate it. If it was consistent then it wouldn’t matter, but nope, don’t waste your money for one for medical purposes.

This is second hand, but several friends in the area said they went shopping at several of the Michael's and JoAnn's (craft) stores in the area and that they saw many holes and places where management spread out the merchandise (like baskets and glassware) to make the shelves look filled. I haven't thought of it, but I guess a number of craft supplies come from China.

I crochet and have a stash of yarn, but if you draw, paint, or do other crafts, you may want to check into that for yourself.

Got to look up Winco.....

Well crap. The nearest Winco, is in Garland Texas. I lived there 34 years ago,
and remember leaving there in January 1986. Now my AO is about 1200 miles
away in The Upstate of South Carolina.

Maybe they will expand out towards the SouthEast. I will send them an email.

Please be safe everyone.

Regards to all.

I have been a prepper/survivalist/conspiracy theorist, since my days in Texas,
and have always kept a good supply of meds. I need to stock some of the meds
mentioned in this thread, and will check tomorrow morning.

Just this week, I got an air purifier, that has a UV-C element for viruses,
and I have it running right now, about 6 feet from me. I can tell that it has
cleaned up the air some, just in the few days that I have had it running.

It has a blue light around the top of the tower, when the UV-C is active,
it looks weird when the light is on.

Please be safe everyone.

Regards to all.

I should have started last fall, but ordered 2 pounds of elderberries a few days ago for making elderberry syrup (summerthyme's recipe) this weekend.

I will pick up a few extra gallons of distilled water tomorrow for elderberry syrup, making CS when needed, and ???.

I found a good local sale and bought two 20# propane tanks (grill size). Make sure all of your fuel supplies are filled.
A gas grill can be a good source of cooking heat along with camping/hiking stoves.

Whew. Just finished going through the storage food. Feel good about that. I haven't wanted to burden the kids, all off on their own, but I have things covered for everyone. Any remaining purchases, if/when I decide it's time, will be things like yeast and topping off the vinegars, as well as loading any freezer space with meat and vegetables, some orange-juice concentrate. And some alcohol -- I use vodka with my yard elderberries -- maybe also some to drink, eh?

I don't usually gamble with planting times, but this year I think I'll be putting up the hoops and pushing early plantings. Seeds are cheap.

I hate this, but definitely feel I have a heads-up profile. Of course, it's all in God's hands. Doesn't mean He doesn't want me to think.

The question was, "What is the best material to make expedient masks?"

Believe it or not, Maxi-pads are made of the same material as N-100 masks. The ones with wings on them. At least that is what an engineer told me. You asked.....

We went to an auction last night That we go to from time to time. They had a case of N95 masks at $3 a box. I don't know why I only got two boxes, maybe'ts because I have about 100 n95 masks already. Not one other person wanted any. And I got six boxes of DayQuil HBP Cold and Flu at $2 a box. One other person got two boxes. Not one damn prepper in the lot. I feel like an alien when I'm out around people. One fellow did say that at some point we may all be wearing masks, but didn't buy any.

Most of the other items they offered were junk. Sometimes they have a fellow that has a lot of food, but not last night. DH got an electric chain saw, a miter saw and a bug whakker.

Panic Early - Panic Often
Spot Report From Sam's 9am Saturday - SW Florida

I did a Sam's Club run today and everything was normal. No panic buying (except me :) ), normal.

What I did notice (see photo) was that the pallets of bulk white long grain rice (25# and 50#) was low on the sales floor and did not notice other pallets of this rice anywhere.

Sam's serves small business' and that could account for the low stock level of the rice.

Folks talking about rice We have more rice than we need and I'm guessing that we have close to a 100 pounds of it, wife gets carried away and even forgets how much of we have of various items and I have to tell her no more rice.
