Length of incubation period question - they are looking at that closely. So far still supports 14 days, but still evaluating data.

Pres Trump seems optimistic about it going away. What info is CDC providing him? One indication is that it could be seasonal. Not making that call now, preparing as if it will continue, see community spread, etc., but hopeful we won't see high levels of transmission.
The best politically-driven information that an organization saturated with Obama-loving zealots could ever hope to give to the evil orange man.

Don't think for a moment, that the Deep State and embedded Never-Trumpers wouldn't gleefully watch the nation perish in viral agony if it would make DJT look bad.

I had a regular appointment with my GP today. His CMA (certified medical assistant, and one of my favorite people) asked while doing her workup (weight, BP etc) if there was anything in particular I wanted to talk to the doc about. I told her I wanted to get the PPSV-23 pneumonia vaccine. She was shocked because I am usually vaccine averse, but told me they had it on hand at the practice and she would set it up for me.

Doc came in and was shocked too. He wanted to know why I wanted the vax now after turning it down flat when he offered it a few months back. So I told him about possible COVID-19 complications, and discussed TB2K and my history with all you misfits over the last two decades.

So he gives me puppy dog eyes and says "And you'd listen to them and not to ME?" :D I know him too well to think he was actually hurt by it - made up for it by asking if he knew China's only Level 4 biolab was in Wuhan. He didn't. So we had a brief discussion about what else he needed to know.

Serious thanks to all you reprobates, and kudos.

People like that piss me the heck off, especially after I have forwarned them.
We don’t tell anybody anything anymore.
Year after year I have proved right, my thinking, and preparedness to other members of the family only to be talked about behind my back as being, not normal, but when the crap hits their life, who gets called for a bail out.
Not this time. Stick a fork in me, I am done talking or trying to warn. None of them know what I have, even if they did, they couldn’t find it much less find where I live these days.

I'm right there with ya! I did make the mistake of letting them into my pantry room, and showed them all of our survival gear and ways to live self sufficiently if things get bad. I had in mind that they would get encouraged to do the same if I just helped them out a little bit, showing them how to and what to prep. Now, after two years, they still haven't done anything to help themselves. They are going to be very surprised when they come knocking on my door, expecting me to support them. Not gonna happen! I don't even mention it to them anymore. Two of them came over for a visit, yesterday. They had been all over town buying up junk and trinkets, and had large cups of Starbuck coffee in their hands! Just "happy go lucky" attitudes. I've said it before here on the forum. I'm done trying to warn anyone.

Just so I don't sound cruel. I'm not talking about my children and their wives. They are all very well prepped.

I'm getting calls asking if this person or that family can come too, and all are welcome. We'll figure it out when they get here. If they make it. Big if. I doubt we got much lead time at all.

You’re thinking a sort of lockdown then. I know you’ve leaned that way for a bit.

Adding - increase in rate of spread overseas has increased their belief we will see the same here, hence their change in tone of the briefings. Families need to plan for community spread because if it happens, it happens very quickly as has been seen overseas.

Also, she seemed to emphasize not just the spread but the fact that cases are showing up with no known source of transmission. I think that's what's put the wind up them.

US health official says coronavirus is moving closer to being a pandemic

We have been in a pandemic for almost a full month, now.

I wish they would quit worrying so much about the terminology!

The classical definition of a pandemic is not elusive
Heath Kelly a
a. Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory, Department of Epidemiology, Locked Bag 815, Carlton South, Vic. 3053, Australia (e-mail: heath.kelly@mh.org.au).

Bulletin of the World Health Organization 2011;89:540-541. doi: 10.2471/BLT.11.088815

Doshi argues cogently that the definition of pandemic influenza in 2009 was elusive but does not refer to the classical epidemiological definition of a pandemic. A pandemic is defined as “an epidemic occurring worldwide, or over a very wide area, crossing international boundaries and usually affecting a large number of people”. The classical definition includes nothing about population immunity, virology or disease severity. By this definition, pandemics can be said to occur annually in each of the temperate southern and northern hemispheres, given that seasonal epidemics cross international boundaries and affect a large number of people. However, seasonal epidemics are not considered pandemics.

A true influenza pandemic occurs when almost simultaneous transmission takes place worldwide. In the case of pandemic influenza A(H1N1), widespread transmission was documented in both hemispheres between April and September 2009. Transmission occurred early in the influenza season in the temperate southern hemisphere but out of season in the northern hemisphere. This out-of-season transmission is what characterizes an influenza pandemic, as distinct from a pandemic due to another type of virus.

Yup- whether they had a hand in setting the dragon a'flame, or are merely beside themselves in ecstatic relief at the prospect of all these tears, fears and death is beside the point, imho. The are guilty.

I was just going to ask if we thought that DJT "downplayed" the situation, and had Rush stoke the ah it ain't nothing story line, for the express purpose of getting the Ds to come out with some of the truth and gravity of the situation. Sounds convoluted, but we've seen DJT does play the media and political opponents this way. Then again, we've had CDC inching toward a tonal change for what, three days now, so perhaps not....

San Francisco Declares Coronavirus Emergency
By Greg Richter | Tuesday, 25 February 2020 06:37 PM

San Francisco Mayor London Breed on Tuesday declared a state of emergency in her city over a potential coronavirus outbreak, The Hill reported.

No cases of Covid-19, as the virus is officially named, have been reported in the city, but Breed said in a prepared statement, "the global picture is changing rapidly, and we need to step-up preparedness.

"We see the virus spreading in new parts of the world every day, and we are taking the necessary steps to protect San Franciscans from harm," Breed said.

The mayor's action comes as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned Americans to brace for disruptions to daily life.

"It's not so much of a question of if this will happen in this country any more, but a question of when this will happen," Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said Tuesday. "Disruption to everyday life might be severe."

San Francisco's move allows city officials to ready its resources should there be a coronavirus outbreak in the city. Santa Clarity County has already issued a similar declaration.

The virus began in mainland China with most cases still there, though Italy has recently seen the largest amount of cases outside Asia. More than 77,000 cases have been confirmed in China, with 2,000 confirmed elsewhere. The United States has confirmed 57 cases, which includes 40 people who retured from the Diamond Princess cruise ship.

San Francisco declares state of emergency over coronavirus

By Tal Axelrod - 02/25/20 05:39 PM EST

San Francisco Mayor London Breed (D) declared a state of emergency for the city on Tuesday amid concerns over the international coronavirus outbreak.

While no coronavirus cases have been confirmed in San Francisco, “the global picture is changing rapidly, and we need to step-up preparedness,” Breed said in a statement.

“We see the virus spreading in new parts of the world every day, and we are taking the necessary steps to protect San Franciscans from harm,” she added.

The new state of emergency will allow city officials to assemble resources and personnel to expedite emergency planning measures and boost the ability to deploy a rapid response to a potential coronavirus case in the city.

The move follows a similar declaration from Santa Clara County earlier this month. The declaration is effective immediately for seven days and will be voted on by the board of supervisors on March 3.

The statement from Breed comes amid stark warnings from U.S. health officials over the chances of an outbreak of the virus in the U.S.

“As more and more countries experience community spread, successful containment at our borders becomes harder and harder,” Nancy Messonnier, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said Tuesday.

“It’s not a question of if this will happen but when this will happen and how many people in this country will have severe illnesses,” she added. “Disruption to everyday life might be severe.”

More than 77,000 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in China, where the virus was first detected, but more than 2,000 cases have been identified in other countries. Fifty-seven cases have been confirmed in the U.S., including 40 people who had been repatriated to the country from the Diamond Princess cruise ship.

Some lawmakers have expressed skepticism that the administration is taking bold enough action to curb the risk of the virus spreading in the U.S., with some saying the $2.5 billion it requested in in emergency coronavirus funding was insufficient.

"It seems to me at the outset that this request for the money, the supplemental, is lowballing it, possibly, and you can't afford to do that," Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, told Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar during a hearing on the agency's budget request.

It is funny the thinking that Mr, Average can afford to stock up enough food to last this out. Dead farmers do not grow crops.

Just one city in Iran had 100 dead in one day......

What if city water supplies go down???

Lots of things to go wrong....
Stop! Stop! Or you will run into the conundrum all preppers run into sooner or later. It's hopeless, something will get us out of left field and we are all going to die no matter what.

Please take time to search for fire hazards inside and outside your home. Fire mitigation is online and depends on your circumstances.

Fire department may not come in an emergency.
i was on my local fire dept for 5 years, been off for 2 but i am still friends with everyone. i was helping the assistant chief put flooring in his living room this past sat. we have been talking for the past few weeks about the virus and it came up again. i flat out asked what they were planning on doing? he said he has no idea and is pretty nervous. now i left this dept due to it being ran by emotions and idiots. nothing has changed. all the guys are great guys but cant work together and i was done getting orders that were getting people hurt or too many close calls. i am sure every small town faces the same issues.

I asked if they were stocked up on supplies? nope. i asked if they still ran low on everything because people could not keep inventory. yep. i then flat out asked what HE is doing if it gets bad here. he said he was staying home.

bottom line from that conversation was we are on our own. good thing i knew the answers before i asked him. this is why we prep.

also guy a few miles down the road has cattle. figure me and a few neighbors can trade or buy a cow and split it.

I had several folks at work mention the very same thing to me. Even though I have not ever discussed with anyone at work what I have or don’t have they’ve made it known they’ll be over if things got bad.
I’ve told them all they’ll not hear my reply when they come knocking. Never gets brought up again.

Watched mainstream news tonight, seems the narrative has changed to if not when, severe disruptions expected, state of emergency in San Francisco. Why are they allowing the stampede now? Is this the precursor softening up the populace to restricted movement? State border closures etc? All thoughts appreciated as I ponder if when to call young adult children back to the ranch from their city lives 5 hours away.

In the case of SF, IMHO TPTB there have figured it out, some how, that all that human waste and such on the city streets is a lake of gasoline awaiting a spark. That it took this long is the conundrum to me.

Been on the phone all day with people who need a plan.

I don't think they're giving us much lead time, but that's a personal opinion.

We'll be ok. Trust Trump.

What do you mean, not enough lead time? We're going to be into 60 days soon - more if you go back the more than three months prior, from your first warnings. That's like six months!

WTH - Are You trying to negotiate for more time?

How is that going to help you against a pneumonia caused by a virus?

PPSV23 (pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine) protects against 23 types of pneumococcal bacteria.
