1988 Jeep Cherokee tranny?

We had the transmission rebuilt and replaced about 25000 miles ago, and now it does not always want to shift from 1st to 2nd. It is an automatic, 4 speed, 4X4. I replaced the filter and fluid yesterday. It was thick and goopy and it does seem somewhat better. When it does shift it is smooth and runs fine, but sometimes it just doesn't want to shift out of first. If you go above 25 MPH and it fails to shift, then it "free wheels" and acts like it is in neutral. Any ideas? I hate to think we need another new transmission. Otherwise it is a great car. Is there a sensor or some sort of mechanism that tells it when to shift that may be clogged or need replacment? When it does shift, then there is no problem going thru all the gears and maintaining normal operating speed. The problem seems to be worse after the transmission is good and warmed up.

It can be two things...

1st guess:Stuck Valve body
2nd guess:Burnt band on the tranny

My money is on the valve body. You should take it to a tranny shop and have them rebuild it, methinks.

Had to ressurect this thread.

I am a MORON.

Check the function of the throttle position sensor/replace it!

Thick and goopy automatic tranny fluid never portends of good things . . .

From your limited description, it would seem that you have a burned out clutch pack and/or band that has shed its friction material layer due to overheating -- overheating can be caused by several things -- working the automatic tranny too hard -- towing, heavy loads, hot outside temps not allowing for sufficient cooling of tranny, OR, a stuck valve/accutation circuit in valve body that is causing a band or clutch pack to be unable to engage fully, allowing excess slippage and heat from friction of slippage, or clutch pack or band accutator seals that are leaking pressure, and not allowing the clutch pack and/or band to fully engage, resulting in excess slippage and the heat from friction -- bottom line -- sounds like tranny needs rebuilding.

What color was the automatic tranny fluid when you changed it? What did it smell like?
