I remember my Dad talking about the river bursting out of its banks in 1939, which is supposedly (according to my Dad) why the whole thing was encased in concrete. Considering that it usually looks like a tiny trickle in a giant concrete basin, thinking of it over-topping its banks is rather scary. He also remembers the Long Beach Earthquake of the early 1930s as a small boy.
