Progress in investigation of July murders
Federal agents arrested three presumed members of the crime organization, La Familia Michoacana, one of whom confessed to being implicated in the execution murders of 12 federal police this past July [M3 report 7/15/09]. The three, said to be in the service of cartel leader Servando Gomez Martinez, “La Tuta,” were in possession of several firearms and two vehicles.

Mexican troops return home
After a five-month tour of duty combatting organized crime in the northern border area of Reynosa, Tamaulipas, more than 800 Mexican soldiers returned to their home base in Comitan, Chiapas, near the southern border. During their time away from home, the troops were only allowed to communicate by telephone, no photos or letters. The Armored Cavalry regiment arrived home after their 1,000 mile trip Thursday evening to their jubilant families.

Mexican troops of the Joint Operation Culican-Navolato-Guamuchil-Mazatlan in the state of Sinaloa destroyed a hidden airstrip and seized firearms, drugs and an armored vehicle. The operations took place in the northern part of the state.

Limited medical services
Only three hospitals in Cd. Juarez, Chihuahua, all of them public, will accept and treat gunshot victims, due to the dangers they represent to the medical staff trying to save the victims’ lives. The risk comes from hit men who often seek to complete their mission inside the hospital. During 2008 and up to the present, at least 10 such attacks have been carried out on people being treated for bullet wounds. Cross-border cooperation
Mexican federal police carried out an operation west of Mexicali near El Centinela during which they seized nearly a half ton of marihuana and the truck transporting it. The driver escaped to the north on foot into the US where he was captured by the US Border Patrol and repatriated to Mexican authorities.

Mexican Consuls recognize US political will for immigration reform
Mexico, D.F. – The Mexican consuls assigned to the US report that they recognize the political will of the government of Barack Obama to carry out an immigration reform in that country. The Foreign Affairs Office (SRE) also advised of the positive attitudes of US federal authorities to cooperate with Mexico in protecting the labor rights of Mexican nationals. The Consuls added that they acknowledge the difficult surroundings in which the Mexican migrants exist in the US and at the same time, recognize the US President’s will to accomplish an immigration reform.

Four suspects arrested for 211 murders
Mexican authorities in Cd. Juarez, Chihuahua, arrested four presumed hit men working for the Arellano Felix drug cartel and charged them with the execution murders of 211 people, mostly members of rival criminal gangs. The charges listed: Cristian Enrique Franco, 22 years old, 16 murders; Edgar Flores, 30 years old, 87 murders; Omar Castro, 28 years old, 93 murders; and Armando Alcibar, 21 years old, 15 murders.

American dream interrupted
Tecate, Baja California, police spotted a suspicious van traveling off-road near the US border near the settlement of La Rumorosa. Five police units blocked the van’s way and an inspection revealed 14 aspiring illegal entrants along with their two guides who were from Tijuana. The human load, consisting of six women and eight men were going to each pay the two smugglers $2,000. The article adds that even though the 14 were “frustrated in their ‘American dream,’ they were also rescued from an uncertain fate,” due to the well-known habit of unscrupulous smugglers who “abandon their clients in remote areas that have already resulted in deaths.” [Photo relates.]

Masacre in Sinaloa
A group of youths gathered on one of the main streets of Navolato, Sinaloa, were targets of AK-47 gunfire from at least 10 men in two vehicles, leaving eight dead and four gravely wounded. The attack occurred around midnight last night in an area where youths gather on weekends. The dead included six males and two females. Six of the victims’ ages ranged from 15 to 20, while two others were 32 and 36. Although there were more than 100 gathered in the area, the hit men focused on the one group of 12. [Photo below relates.] The Mexico City newspaper, La Jornada, later issued an unofficial report that two of those wounded had died at the hospital, raising the total deaths to 10. La Jornada also added that one of the female victims was believed to be the daughter of a municipal police officer.

A group of gunmen assassinated a municipal policemen in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, and accidentally wounded a 12-year-old girl. The attack provoked police response, resulting in the death of one of the attackers and the arrest of another.

Another attack report from Nuevo Leon
Subjects dressed in military clothing opened fire on eight people in a vehicle in the town of China, Nuevo Leon. killing two and wounding six. Both fatalities in the submachine gun attack were female. It occurred as the group was in a gas station waiting for service. The paramilitary criminal group, Los Zetas, are suspected of carrying out the attack.

Cozumel, Q. Roo – The director of public security revealed that the department has received several false reports of sightings of armed men and of abductions and has discovered the reports come from individuals linked to narcotraffic. Apparently, they are trying to “measure the response capability of the police agencies.” He said the police will continue to respond to all calls, regardless.
