OT/MISC Bedroom door latch issue

Last year we had a problem with the door not closing properly. I redid the hinges using longer screws, then the only issue was D'Argo busting it open when a Thunderstorm came thru. Put sliding bolts on the inside and outside.

We only set those at night or when we leave the house to keep him and Cash away from each other.

Last week I was sitting here and the three dogswere in the office, they started whining. I finally got tired of it, stood up and saw the bedroom door was open.

Close door, bit later it's open again.

Rinse and repeat then we find it no longer latched. Stupid cat could fart and it would swing open.

i checked the hinges, checked the knob-everything was tight. Played with it tonight, removed the plate the doorknob bolt goes into to hold door shut-no it shuts and latches tho there is some play in the door. Maybe 1/4"

Not sure how to solve this-not a lot of room between where the original screws were in the frame and the edge plus, how do I figure the plate location since that's invisible when door is closed.

With your vision, use some markers.

Tape a piece of paper over the strike. (door jamb)

Put something on the bolt to see where it hits the paper...shoe polish, rub with a pencil, etc.

Might give you a clue?

Saved, to glorify God.
Are you sure the house hasn't had its foundation affected by settling, earthquake( even SLOW earthquakes can affect buildings) or foundation cracks from gutters that dont direct water away from foundation, or slow earth (hillside collapse coming) movement, termites in floor or foundation support woodworking or in Florida, a sinkhole near the house?

I have an exterior set of French doors that "move" every spring and fall. Locks need adjustment just like clockwork.

Dunno if an interior door would be affected the same way.

Be prepared to undo what you do now...

Live in Southern Arizona.
Use a swamp cooler during the summer.
One door that is fine the rest of the year swells and sticks during the summer.
House was built by a Tucson Electric Power lineman that thought he was a carpenter.
As a carpenter, he was one hell of a plumber.
As a plumber he was one hell of a electrician.
As an electrician he was one hell of a carpenter.

In short, I have yet to find ANYTHING he did in building the house that he did not F_ _ _ up somewhere.

When SWMBO wins the lottery, we will either sell the joint or move everything of value out and burn it to the ground!

Look up donnydoors on YouTube. He shows how to fix almost all things doors. And he doesn’t make something more difficult than it should be (or doesn’t appear to).

Good luck. Doors that do stupid things get on my nerve.

I've considered the housev settling idea, however, it is the only door that has issues-I think, between it being the main door besides the entry doors that gets used-regulary use and the "**** you!" slams during a 'Discussion' and the two of us going in and out all day it is just normal shifting.

Millwright-great idea. I was think along those line but did not think of using a piece of paper.

Naegling...now you understand my Real reason for putting the sliding bolts on the door.

Her: "Sat, I need out!"

Me: 'Are you wearing any clothes?'

Her: "It's the middle of the day, of course I'm dressed!"

Me: 'Nope, you can't come out. Get naked and I will let you out.'

I've got these inside and outside of door-like I said above, when we go to bed we lock the inner one, when we leave the house we lock the outer one. Here? Well, except for the Naked thing we don't want to have to lock either-just have the door latch properly. Keeps one or the other from being locked in or out for no good reason.
