You can buy black tea at any grocery store. You can also find sources for the highest quality on the 'net. English Breakfast, Irish Breakfast, and Ceylon are just a few black teas - there are many others. I would suggest that you buy a decent tea at the grocery store if you are not used to drinking it. Do not go with the cheap tea, it can be nasty. I drink tea every day and I buy organic tea bags, Newman's organic, Lipton organic and Bigelow Steep organic English Breakfast. These are not connoisseur quality teas, but they are good every day teas and a good place to start. Every tea drinker has their favorites.

To add to what spinner said, in the US almost all teas are black teas unless they are labeled otherwise.

Other common types of teas: Green, White, Oolong, Herbal, Rooibos. (There are a few other types that are hard to find, but you'll probably not encounter those). If you grab any tea on the shelf, if it does not say it is one of those 5 types, it most likely is black tea.

Not that I recommend it (because of added sugar or chemicals), buy if you order tea at any restaurant, fast food place, or fill a cup at any convenience store -- they almost all will be black tea, or as most places call it "tea".

Follow up: Are you looking to drink hot tea or iced tea? And are you looking to drink a small amount like a cup a day, or are you looking to use it to replace something else you drink (such as sodas as an example)?

Go with good quality tea, organic if you can find it. Also Harney and Sons had a about a million different blends of teas. I tend to drink green tea. But for iced tea a love a naturally flavored black tea. Harney has mango iced black tea as well as peach. Yummy.

Right off hand, I would say that green tea has more benefits. Black tea has been processed and oxidized, changing the original constituents.

For specific benefits, I would do a search on pubmed for benefits of Camellia sinensis.
