Boehner: 'Obamacare is the law of the land'

Top Talkers: After re-election, House Speaker John Boehner says he believes the House GOP and President Obama will find common ground "to avoid the fiscal cliff." Boehner is also talking less harshly about the president's signature health care law.
By Michael O'Brien, NBC News

Updated 6 p.m. ET - Republicans' efforts to undo President Barack Obama's health care reform law appear to have come to an end, as House Speaker John Boehner described it Thursday as the "law of the land."

In an interview with ABC News, the nation's top elected Republican seemed to indicate that Congress wouldn't engage in the type of repeated repeal votes the way it had in the past two years. Boehner's office provided a transcript of the exchange:

SAWYER:

A couple of other questions about the agenda now. You have said next year that you would repeal the healthcare vote. That's still your mission?

BOEHNER:

Well, I think the election changes that. It's pretty clear that the president was reelected, Obamacare is the law of the land. I think there are parts of the healthcare law that are gonna be very difficult to implement. And very expensive. And as the time when we're tryin' to find a way to create a path toward a balanced budget everything has to be on the table.

SAWYER:

But you won't be spending the time next year trying to repeal Obamacare?

BOEHNER:

There certainly may be parts of it that we believe-- need to be changed. We may do that. No decisions at this point.

The speaker's pronouncement, if nothing else, signifies a pivot away from Republicans' efforts to showcase for conservatives their doggedness in looking to repeal "Obamacare."

It's also a recognition that the 2009-2010 health care law that came to define Obama's first term in office -- and propel Republicans to a majority in the House -- is here to stay.

A spokesman for Boehner sought to clarify the speaker's comments.

"While ObamaCare is the law of the land, it is costing us jobs and threatening our health care," said Kevin Smith, the speaker's communications director. "Speaker Boehner and House Republicans remain committed to repealing the law, and he said in the interview it would be on the table."

The Supreme Court's summer 2012 ruling upholding the constitutionality of the law disarmed conservatives of one of their best possible chances of defeating the health care law once and for all.

And Mitt Romney's loss on Tuesday meant that Republicans won't have in the White House a president that could severely limit the scope of the law before its key provisions begin to take effect in 2014.

Without control of the senate and the WH their vote is only symbolic. The last time they passed a bill to repeal bammacare it went nowhere. They're toothless, and they know it.

What the heck are they supposed to do about Obamacare? The Senate is still in Democrat control and it is evident that the sheeple want it by the election.

If all of Congress and alphabet agencies would submit to obamacare as their health provider then we would see a quick reversal of this asinine position....up yours Boehner....

They are "less" a couple other things . . . a little farther down - and since they're part of the scam that's being perpetrated on the USA citizens it's to be expected and THAT'S very "symbolic".

So how much longer will Boehner and his ilk be in the driver's seat at the RNC? If you don't win elections and can't get agendas put through, you loose money to those who can. At least the far left of the DNC and their affiliated PACs and think tanks have been quite "honest" as to where they want to take the country. But you'll not regularly get that full picture from the MSM, only if you research their own position papers and speeches.

Boehner needs to go.
His remark about there no longer being any TeaParty coalition or extreme right wing groups in the house makes me sick. Changing out Boehner is one of the changes the Repubs have to make if they are to survive. If the Tea Party and real conservatives don't manage to take over control of the Republican party they party shouldn't survive.

By the way there still is a Tea Party coalition in congress.

I see your point. I suspect they will now show less resistance to bamma but will instead let their inner RINOism come out.

To date not one citizen has challenged this bill in a court of law and I do not count lawyers or elected officials.

it is the law of the land for all except the politicians and the 9,734 special interest groups that zer0 granted an exemption to

it should be for EVERYONE OR NO ONE

it's more about taxes than healthcare

The USA is further down the road to Socialism than even Canada.......at least we were given the choice to opt out of Canada Healthcare and supply our own coverage. Not many have but the choice was there. In the USA, I don't believe there are many who are allowed to do that.

What in the world?

Didn't I read that 60% of Americans are opposed to Obamacare?

Gee, and I didn't think I could be more depressed than I already was. :(

Obamacare protests
Alabama, Montana, and Wyoming voted to reject Obamacare's insurance mandate, following the lead of what voters in Arizona, Missouri, and Oklahoma did in 2010. A similar measure this year in Florida failed. Missouri voters took their Obamacare protest one step further this year, approving a measure to prohibit the governor from setting up insurance exchanges unless voters or the state legislature approves. But none of the measures are anything but symbolic; states can't override the insurance mandate, and if Missouri fails to set up the exchanges the federal government will just do it instead.

So it would appear that some of the voters have learned how to undo the ObamaCare gate latch?

I laugh at Owner at my gate. I can't look at him when he tries to open.

Obamacare is the law of the land, Congress has said so and the Supreme Court agreed.

My wife and I make too much money to qualify for government-subsidized health insurance under Obamacare.

My wife and I are self employed.

My wife and I cannot afford private health insurance. We would have to choose between saving for retirement or having a high-deductible health insurance policy.

I sincerely hope that Obamacare provides some financial counselors to help us solve this conundrum. We are hard working taxpayers. If one of us has a heart attack which is possible at our ages, it would cost six figures and we'd have to mortgage the house to pay for it. On the other hand if Pedro sneaks across the border and has a heart attack, he'll get a quadruple bypass for free at our expense. There is something wrong with that.

Any suggestions are appreciated. We already know about medical tourism and our doctors already give us significant discounts for immediate payments.

As it stands right now come 2014 we will pay the fine/tax for not having insurance and we will be very angry about it.

The House can't stop O care on it's own. The bill is already passed, and the SC has already said it's okay with them. There's very little at this point they can do. Pre election rhetoric if fine, but in this case, there's just no way to make it happen.

I have to add that I don't like Boehner because of his constant increasing of the debt ceiling. THAT is something the HR could have stopped long ago, and should have, but keep on passing.
