…… Broody Hen?

So one of my hens has basicaly sat on one nest for three days now. Eyes bright and clear but she does not move when I am there. I know she, at least, shifts around and presumably gets something to eat tho she has not joined in the Feeding Frenzy.

So...Broody or what?

You don't have to move her, just feel under her. If she's starting a small collection, she may be broody. Some seem to almost starve themselves because they don't want to get off the nest for anything.

I don't like to have babies when it's this cold so I'd probably take the eggs and encourage her to get off the nest. I can't remember if you have a rooster or not. If not, there's no point in letting her sit there not eating or drinking enough and taking all your eggs hostage.

I have what I call the broody jail. It’s a wire bottomed rabbit hutch and I put broody hens in to break the cycle. If they can’t get their bellies good and warm, the urge to sit on eggs will go away in a few days. It will go away on its own if you keep removing her from anywhere she tries to nest, but it takes longer than the broody jail.

Well, she pecked me so I picked up the old drawer she/they lay eggs in and dumped her in withthe others-they were plowingthru the scratch I put out, she joined them for a few. Had one egg which cracked when I tilted her next to get her out, fedit to the dog. She was back in when I broughht the water ten minutes later.

I am going to order some plastic eggs to show then where to llay eggs in their new place. Getting a dozen. Was thinking I should put them in a caton in the fridge for Gits and Shiggles.

she had her left side towards me this morning and, at the corner of her eye it looks like some sort of swelling-almost like a Mole.

Chickens seem to always have something going on. That's why I learned long ago to not get too involved in their drama. I do the best I can and accept that they come and they go.

A lot of damage is caused by their rather predatory flock-mates. If it isn't bloody, they probably won't bother her. If it is, they will try to pick her to death. That's just chickens being chickens. I always thank God they are not velociraptor size or we wouldn't have a chance.

Yeah, no blood or anything. I would immediately put her inside one of the large dog crates and separate her or any dealing with that. I want to drain hem of Egs before I eat them. :D

Well. I dumped her off her nest this morning. She joined everyone else pecking at scrath and I found NINE frelling eggs under her. She is the smallest chicken in the group and I cannot imagine her covering nine egss.

Yes, the smallest ones seem to hoard the most eggs. My silkie bantam once accumulated SIXTEEN EGGS. Don't ask me how she got them all underneath her, I still don't know.

How did she get 9 [[or 16]] freakin' eggs in one nest. I know her eggs and none were hers and the usually spots the others lay were devoid of eggs. There is nothing in the Taxonomy of a chicken that shows they could carry an egg-especially since the usual spot for the others is ground level and her nesting box is easilly 6ft away and three feet up.

I think they somehow communicate between themselves... damned if I know! You didn't toss those eggs, did you? Until they're incubated at least 2- 3 days, you won't see any difference, and they're perfectly edible

When times get hard a Bulut egg might be good eating. Why I'm stacking lots of taco sauce.

Heck no I did not toss them. I have pickling lime coming today going to waterglass them.

I dry scramble and run thru the dehydrator as well then powder them in the blender. Keep in the freezer tho they should be fine as I put them in the over long enough to seal after using the Seal-A-Meal connector to remove the oxygen.

Pickle as well. New recipe I like using ghost pepper sauce.
