Fire Can you make use of an oil furnace chimney?

OK - this is probably a dumb question, but I don't know the answer. We have an oil furnace in the basement. It requires both oil & electricity to run. Assuming we have both, it's fine.

The chimney for the furnace comes up through the house and out the roof. We have a two story house. Is it possible to tap into that chimney for a wood burning stove on the first floor? Can two different things use the same chimney??

We can put a pellet stove on an outside wall on the first floor, but then you're limited by electricity and pellets. We have lots of wood.

an oil furnace requires a class A chimney- the same as a wood stove. So if your chimney is in good condition then you could hook a wood stove up to it.

there's alot of "scary" in that plan - something that really needs to be discussed with someone with more expertise ... the exhaust between an oil burner and wood burner is different - solid type embers for one - temps also - creosote build up .... then there's a question about downstairs oil burner running and causing back exhaust thru the wood burner sitting idle - damper?

It's not a good idea to run both on the same stack. Not enough draft (chances are you don't have more than an 8 inch chimney) and a real good opportunity for CO to escape from the oil furnace into the house through the wood burner.
