Farm Coyotes are getting desperate

Broken Arrow

Heathen Pagan Witch
Sitting in my living room this afternoon and I hear this weird yappy dog barking. Sounded like an ankle biter sized dog. Went out to see where it was coming from and it took me a minute to pinpoint the barking.

Big fricken coyote about 60 yards off the back door. Just laying there scoping out my sheep and dog defenses.

And that sucker blended in perfectly with the yellow dry grass and snow. Just inside the tree line.

Took a shot and sadly missed. And I know this is going to sound like an excuse but I think my sights are off. My kid dropped the gun several weeks ago. I’ll get it sighted back in this weekend after the snowstorm passes.

I did call the neighbor where it ran to and let him know it was in the area. Hope he can get him.

The print is 3” long. He was as tall as my German Shepard and twice as wide. Biggest sucker I’ve ever seen. I’m sure most of it was winter coat.

Can’t attach the pic. Keeps saying file too large.

Sounds like possibly a coy dog? Neighbor had one, scary beast.

Eastern Coyotes are a fertile hybrid cross between the Western Coyote and the Eastern Gray Wolf. They can get BIG. Our hired man shot one on our farm that weighed 87#! DNA tested out pure Eastern Coyote...

It wouldn't surprise me if they are spreading west. They are very adaptable.

Two nights ago about 1am EST I had what I call a coyote attack.

I was in bed reading TB and all hell broke loose in the barn lot.

I have bragged that I have not heard coyotes close since I have had the big dogs. That went to hell Monday night.

I guess that the coyotes were eating dog food in the bowl in the barn. Just a guess. Anyway, a helluva fight broke out and I had to investigate.

I got an old 870 with a Streamlight and buckshot (hard to beat at night).

I went out around the house kinda commando dressed and saw nothing but I heard hell breaking loose in the woods in two locations.

I suppose both dogs were earning their keep.

Woods at night are rough, especially with coyotes all around. I heard coyotes in four locations. I had two dogs in the mix. It was definitely a pack.

I have devious plans for the bastards but I first have to lock my dogs in the barn.

Coyotes are predators and run in packs.

Cut them no slack

We just got a new guarding dog a 50/50 mutt. Great Pyrenees and short hair Anatolian Shepherd.

Plan to bread him with our Turkish Akbash and Anatolian Shepherd we got two years ago.

Hoping they gang up and kill some yotes, like the neighbors similar breed dogs do.

Believe if or not , in the “little woods” on our small 1 acre property which is VERY close to town, the coyotes run up and down the creek line a lot....one was in our front yard a few years ago.
Several of our clients at work have brought in their little dogs all chewed up by coyotes, but they’ve survived , even through a harrowing attack by two coyotes at once one little dog held his own bless his heart! He actually fought back and lived! A fiery, spunky little Westie that I ADORED! Love that little guy, but boy, was THAT a scary dramatic mess when his owner called at 7am that morning oh my gosh....

That’s why I don’t get all worked up about the whole “ fur coat thing” when it’s a coyote coat.

I have a gorgeous knee length one as well as a short, hooded coyote coat (I’m in love with both coats by the way) but since they’re predators, and the coats are from the 90’s, so not “new animal kill” I don’t feel guilty.

That’s another story, my wearing fur coats with me being a Vet tech but I digress....

So there, you go.

No need to feel guilty if you shot the bastard coyotes yesterday.

Coyotes are useless predators (in this area).

They are plentiful and breed like flies.

I don’t feel guilty in that respect, but you know the “whole fur coat thing “... anyway, I don’t mean to detail the thread but I’m just saying, yes, they can be a destructive nuisance and dangerous to pets.

(Another derailing is for a different thread ...because it’s not their fault bring forced out of their food habitat) ok , carry on.

Run in packs? Must a new kind of coyote. Wolves run in packs, never saw a coyote that did.

Eastern Coyotes ARE wolf hybrids.. their behavior is MUCH more wolf-like than the little western song dogs.

A pack attacked two large Golden Retrievers on Chautauqua Lake a few years back... they were with their owner, who was cross country skiing. She was unarmed, and could only watch in horror as the dogs were killed snd eaten in front of her. We all figured if she *hadn't* had the dogs with her, she would have been the meal. I believe she told a reporter she came to the same conclusion... those 'yokes weren't the least bit intimidated by her attempts to drive them away from her dogs.

As far as feeling bad the Coyotes have lost their natural habitat... don't waste the time! They are one of the most adaptable creatures on Earth. Amazon has a great video on the Eastern Coyote.. I'll see if I can find a link.

they're very bad here as well. in the off season the bear hunters actively hunt them with dogs and radio collars. this summer in 10 days time they took 81 coyotes in the 4 mile stretch between the house and the little country store on the way into town EIGHTY ONE - thats a huge mess of coyotes

Same as back in our home rural area... we were thankful for the dog hunters who would keep the numbers down. There would have been no whitetail deer without the hunters.

They can sure adapt alright. I live in a metro area and when we first moved here 15 yrs ago, you could hear coyotes barking at the moon. No more. They put a couple 100 houses on that site and the coyotes are gone.

As for packs, new one on me. But then I don't get out much anymore.

I'm not sure that you would call a litter of pups a pack. Older coyotes do hunt in pairs thou. one watching and one in grab and run mode.

Coyotes get shot fairly regularly (whenever anybody sees them) around here. They learn to stay away from humans and their habitats for the most part.

There was a period this summer when I was catching them on the game cam running through the barnyard at night, but it was the wolves who seemed most bold about it all...showing up in daylight and not giving a care. They ain't stupid either. They seem to know they are "hand's off".

You haven't seen the Eastern Coyotes packs... multiple adults, subadults and pups. They have s clear, wolf-like hierarchy and pack structure. However, they don't seem to have the breeding limits wolves have... several females will have pups in the same season, assuming good food supplies.

Now that I think of it, we had something called "Brush Wolves" in the Upper Grt Lakes back in the 1940's. They were larger than coyotes and more robust than the lean wolves I saw in Alaska.

Don't think it occurred to anybody at the time that they might be a cross breed.

They were probably Eastern Gray wolves...

It is not uncommon around here for locals to have a rifle in the truck and if they see a coyote they try their best to kill it, wherever they see it. There are also a few locals that call in coyotes and shoot many that way. The effect of this on the coyote population is - nothing. Coyote population is still high.
I have killed all the coyotes near our place that came out during the day. Now we only hear them at night and never see any. Still have just as many.

I had always heard that wolves kill coyotes but I no longer believe that at all. We have many of both.

The pack here is about a dozen strong...biggest one pushes close to 75#...as its bigger n build n height than our second biggest yard dog whose right at 65#...n they have zero fear of people...several folks have taken to carryin when they're doing field work because of them...several neighbors have resorted to trappin to try to deal with them...sigh...I fear we're gona have to do the same cause there is way to many both here n at the farm...n unfortunately they now associate human with easy meals right after hunting season...

I think it's when the adults train the subadults that the whole field sounds overrun at night.

It's when the pups need fed that I have the most problems. They hunt in the day and love my free range chickens.

They will stalk into the yard and grab a bird then run for it. If the dogs are loose or I am out side they usually end up dropping the chicken during pursuit. It's the young foxes that will run down the whole flock and kill just for fun.

This too shall pass.

The reason the coyote population never seems to go down is because if an empty space is created (by shooting or trapping), the population increases to fill the empty space. This is why livestock guardian dogs usually work better, because they take up a territory and protect it, keeping the coyotes out.

My neighbors want me to hunt them, but my night gun is .308.

At a 1-2bux a shot, I don't waste it on something I can't eat.
I shot all the day time coyotes around here with just a 22 (10/22). Anything within 100 yards is dead if I wish it so with that gun.
I do have other options for longer shots (up to about 300 yard shots possible before the area here is too wooded for clear shots from our house).

I'd like to set up an AR for them, but can't justify another $3K for a second thermal.
