Dandelion Coffee

Finally found a recipe for dandelion root coffee:

Bake cleaned dandelion roots at 200 degrees F for about 4 hours. They should be dark brown inside, crispy, and break easily. Grind to a powder and store in a jar.

One half cup of dandelion root powder to 8 cups of water - brew like you would coffee.

Out to dig dandelions and try this!!! I'm thinking that if real coffee got scarce maybe dandelion coffee could be mixed with real coffee as an extender. Anyone done this?

I haven't tried it yet. I'm allergic to weeds, so I don't know if it would give me a reaction. I used to eat the leaves when I was a kid and didn't notice any problems though. It seems like a lot of work for all the more you get out of it. I'm surprised that it takes 1/2 cup of powder to make one cup of coffee. With all the coffee drinkers here I'd be digging forever!!!

Too Tired to ReTire
We buy roasted dandelion root from some place I think in Iowa. Wifey puts the crumbled root in water and brings it to a boil and then simmers it on med for 15 min. I like mine cool so I drink it the next day a full 8oz glass. It is suppose to be very good for the uninary tract and general health. I like the taste.

Great stuff

My Dad told me they used to do this in the Depression years. Also, they used chicory and roasted that to extend coffee. There was a mix they used........maybe like half and half with real coffee, but he's gone now and I can't talk about all these neat things with Mom and Dad anymore.

There's probably someplace on the web where recipes are found. I'll go try to find some.
