Dundalk attacks: Gardai confirm terror 'is a line of inquiry' but stress that motive remains unclear

Man dies and two others injured after series of attacks in Dundalk
Gardai believe at this stage attacks were random
Dead man (24) is Japanese, two injured men are Irish
One man (18) arrested, originally from Egypt

GARDAI investigating a string of attacks in Louth this morning have said that terrorism "is a line of inquiry" - but have stressed that the attacker's motive remains unknown.

An 18-year-old Egyptian man is being questioned on suspicion of murder following the incidents in Dundalk which left a young Japanese man dead, and two young Irishmen injured.

Among the lines being investigated is that the young man had recently been refused asylum in the UK - but is in unclear how he may have subsequently entered Ireland or travelled to Dundalk.

At a press conference this afternoon, Chief Superintendent Christy Mangan officially confirmed that terrorism is one line of inquiry into three separate attacks which occurred within less than 60 minutes around 9am today.

“A terror attack is a line of inquiry, it’s certainly a line that we would look at,” he said.

“We will endeavour to establish the suspects background, who they are, where they’ve come from and why are they here.

“We’re very interested to know why was he in Dundalk, why would he come here, what’s the reason, what’s the connection,” he added.

Chief Supt Mangan said that gardai will be liaising with Egyptian authorities as part of this investigation.

He further stressed, however, that the motive for the attack on "an innocent bystander going about their work" was unclear. He added that the attack "certainly would appear to be random and unprovoked" and it appeared that the Egyptian man had acted alone.

The victim, who was aged 24 and from Japan, was attacked on Avenue Road in the town and stabbed in the back. He died at the scene.

Two other Irish men were subsequently attacked at two other locations in the town, the Inner Relief Road and Seatown.

Their injuries are not life-threatening.

Councillor Ruairi O Murchu lives close to the scene of the attack in Avenue Road. He said there was major concern among local people.

"The community is in shock," said the Sinn Fein representative. "Our thoughts are with the family of the person killed and those that have been injured."

The first incident happened on Avenue Road at around 9am, when the Japanese man was attacked from behind and stabbed in the back with a knife. The 24-year-old died at the scene. Gardai were at the scene within seven minutes, Chief Supt Mangan said, after receiving a call from ambulance control reporting that a man had been found unresponsive.

He said the man was on his way to work when he was attacked. He added: "It's very hard on the family when someone is walking to work and they get attacked and killed in a foreign country".

Gardai received another call at 9.32am, reporting an incident at Coes Road in the town, and another call eight minutes later to report an incident at Seatown place. In the latter two incidents, two Irishmen - understood to be in their early 20s and from the area - had been attacked with iron bars.

A short time later, a Garda spotted a man carrying an iron bar and - after calling for assistance - he was disarmed and arrested.

The young man may also have been carrying two knives.

Investigating Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact Dundalk Garda Station on 042 9388400, the Garda Confidential Line 1 800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

One dead, two hurt in 'random and unprovoked' attack in Dundalk

A 24-year-old man has died and two others were wounded in a stabbing incident in Dundalk.

The first incident happened on Avenue Road at around 9am, where the victim, who is from Japan, was attacked on the street and stabbed in the back.

He died at the scene.

Gardaí said that a call was received from ambulance control to Drogheda Garda Station at 9am reporting that a man had been found unresponsive at Avenue Road.

Gardaí arrived at the scene at 9.07am.

At 9.32am another call was received regarding another incident at Coes Road in Dundalk and a further call was received at 9.40am about an incident at Seatown Place,.

Two men had been attacked with an iron bar at those locations and were taken to hospital.

Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Chief Superintendent Christy Mangan said that a member of the force later observed a person carrying a fencing post and acting in a suspicious manner.

The Garda called for assistance and the attacker was disarmed and arrested.

He is 18-years-old and from Egypt and is believed to have been carrying at least two knives along with the fencing post.

Initial investigations indicate that he may have applied to remain in the UK, but may have been refused and entered Ireland following the refusal.

At a press briefing this afternoon, Chief Supt Mangan confirmed that the 18-year-old had been in contact with gardaí from the Immigration Section two days ago in relation to a possible application for residency in Ireland, and there was no indication then of any involvement on his part in criminality.

He has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is being detained at Dundalk Garda Station where he can be questioned for up to 24 hours.

Gardaí say they have yet to establish a motive for the attack, but one line of inquiry is a possible link to terrorism.

Chief Supt Mangan said the attack appeared to be random and unprovoked and gardaí have so far found nothing to suggest that the victims knew each other.

He said gardaí are satisfied at this time that the suspect acted alone and that he was in Dundalk on 1 January.

Part of the investigation, he said, will be to establish why the suspect was in Dundalk and who he was associating with.

He added that gardaí will be speaking to Egyptian authorities regarding the young man's movements.

The three scenes have been preserved pending the arrival of the State Pathologist and the Garda Technical Bureau.

Chief Superintendent Mangan said gardaí will not be releasing any further details on the man who was killed until his family have been informed.

He said the man was on his way to work when he was attacked, adding, "it's very hard on the family when someone is walking to work and they get attacked and killed in a foreign country".

Wow, great update, this morning they were reporting it as more of a routine stabbing; not that anyone dying is "routine" but Dundalk is a weird place for a terrorist attack; especially one of this nature.

Unless something else happens; the Lone Wolf "inspired by" is most likely in this case; a serious cell would be more likely to go after a big venue like New Years Eve in Dublin or even one of the more local festivals that happen this time of year.

We haven't had much (well not really any) Islamic Terror in Ireland (yet) but everyone (including the cops) know that Ireland is sort of a "sitting duck" when it comes to infastructure to deal with any that might happen.

One person stabbed to death and two injured as 'Egyptian teen armed with a number of weapons' launches street rampage in Ireland in 'potential terror attacks'

The stabbing victim has been described locally as a 24-year-old Japanese man
Knife attack happened shortly after 9am this morning in Dundalk, County Louth
Two others, thought to be Irish, were attacked with iron bar in separate assaults
Police are working to establish whether the three were terror related and linked

One person has been stabbed to death and two others have been injured in what is being described as a series of 'random attacks' in Ireland.

Gardai are said to have arrested a heavily-armed teenager born in North Africa and officers are investigating if three separate incidents are terror related.

The knife attack happened shortly before 9am in Dundalk and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Local sources have identified the attacker as an 18-year-old Egyptian, the Irish Times reports.

hree scenes were preserved for technical examination in Avenue Road, Inner Relief Road and Seatown, County Louth, police said.

The stabbing victim is a 24-year-old Japanese man, according to RTE, and the two injured in separate attacks are said to be Irish.

Their conditions are unknown at this stage and it is believed they were assaulted with an iron bar.

Police officers confronted and disarmed the attacker, who was said to be carrying a number of weapons.

Investigators are working to establish whether or not the knifeman knew his victims and whether the incident was planned.

Sniffer dogs were seen on the streets this morning and a forensic tent was erected on Avenue Road, straddling the pavement and the road.

Surrounding roads remained closed as police worked to establish the chain of events.

Forensic officers were seen entering and exiting the tent, and a body was reportedly seen being carried away from the scene.

Yep sounds like he came in across the border with the North a couple of days prior after being refused asylum in the UK, of course this reinforces the UK position of a "hard border" with the North,
most likely a lone wolf not particually well planned attack, Dundalk at 9am isn't exactly hustle and bustle

Nope, I've been there at that hour and most of the shops are not even open yet, but you can get wifi and coffee at the coffee stand at the end of the mall (husband had a very boring rotation there and the wifi was out in the B and B).

We are not talking a major urban center here...well maybe for rural Ireland and I had wondered if the border issue would come up; I don't think a hard border is going to be a good idea (I've been here since they had one and it was a mess crossing it) - I mean a good idea in some practical ways but very bad idea in terms of relations on the Island.

The "other" terrorism is more likely to raise its head again if we close the border, but then there is this other sort that is more likely if left open (but there are a lot of other holes in Irish immigration; like hundreds of bays and inlets that have made Ireland the home of smugglers and pirates long before Grania O'Malley commanded a ship!

Was there any Aloha Snackbarring involved?

I thought the Irish went in more for blackthorn than knives. "Routine stabbing" is not a phrase I would expect to see reported out of Ireland.

You haven't been following the news about the gang fighting in Dublin and Limerick then (which lately has also included more guns than before); sometimes that gang violence does spread out into the rural communities, especially because there are a lot of grow houses and places of prostitution (both often involve human trafficking labor/slaves).

Now in Dundalk, the "new improved" whatever-they-are-calling-themselves-this-week version of the IRA would not have been impossible but they tend to use guns and if they want to send a message they shoot someone in the knees (happened last week or so in Belfast) or just make them disappear.

Is the "50-50" still a 'thing' over there? Used to be they'd shoot someone in the spine in the small of the back with a pistol - odds were about even on the victim dying or living and if the victim lived, they'd be a paraplegic.
