TECH DVD Player Recommendations Needed

If you WANT high speed, you're getting more options these days. The mobile phone companies--T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon--are increasingly offering 4G service, which works pretty well. Plus there's Elon's StarLink.

It's due to lack of towers, and cables (whatever those are called) in her area. I have great internet access simply because it's a university town, otherwise it'd suck here like does in the towns to the west and east of me!

Blu ray player here. I just got one of the Sony ones to replace our dead one. Sony BPD-S6700. It was the newest version of the dead one. Wifi and other smart options. And will allow me to plug a hard drive loaded with movies in. Keeps us from hitting the data cap on our internet.

Thanks, I just added that to my cart!

I have a "dumb" TV that's a decade or so old. One of Dad's project TVs. Long story short, he replaced it. And then got bored and wanted to figure out why it quit. So he spent a few days replacing different things and soldering connections a little bit better, etc, etc. Yes, he knew what he was doing. (Oh man, Radio Shack still existed then.)

Surprise, surprise, all his tinkering got it back up and running beautifully. He still grumps that he should have kept it and given us the new one. Because he's had to replace his several times now and this old one is still ticking along. Of course, that may also be because we don't watch near as much TV as they do.

Anyways, the S3700 worked fine until son jammed two discs in at once. And we've lived without one for quite a while. But the DNLA through the router keeps acting up and it's just not worth the trouble. If the drive is connected to the blu-ray player, the TV can see it and play the movies.

I have a very old computer with the last good DVD ripping program that I bought. I haven't found it's equivalent since and it is now no longer available. So we keep that computer running solely to make the backup copies of the son's DVDs. We can legally make the backup copies, just that. But we are likely dead in the water when that dies because none of the streaming services will let you download the videos, even if you own them online. And we be in the country... where the internet providers hit you with monthly data caps still.

He bought me a Sony Blue Ray at Best Buy yesterday, absolutely love it! We watched second hand lions last night and if you have the dvd watch past the credits cause there's an additional three minutes of footage at the very end. No more clunking noises, no skipping, it was a wonderful movie experience. Now to dig the rest of my dvd's out of storage.

This is the one he bought:

I just go with the cheapest player that I can readily buy a second or third on. Though Lately I have been looking at other storage options with the cheapening of mass storage on the horizon...

The link doesn't work, but I'm glad to hear it worked well for you. Always nice to have the option to just settle in and watch some movies.

Yep! We're lucky if our cell phones work more than 50% of the time. Internet is hit and miss. If I weren't nearing retirement, I'd have to live in either Des Moines or Ames for both an affordable and dependable connection.
That said, I made it through the pandemic and was still able to do a lot of online meetings. I was just limited in showing video or uploading large files on the spot.

Honestly, I don't mind getting DVDs from the library. I can drop my entertainment costs to near zero. That helps me to buy better food or take a day trip somewhere.

The amenities here is one of the reasons I stay here! Local library has a huge dvd collection. I’m game for better quality food as well.
