3 Official Patients, Thomas Eric Duncan, in Texas Presbyterian Hospital died 10/8/2014. Nurse, Nina Pham, who attended Duncan presented with confirmed Ebola on 10/11/2014. 2nd nurse, Amber Joy Vinson, presented with Ebola and confirmed on 10/14/2014.

Ebola Outbreak in Dallas can only be declared "OVER" 42 days after no new cases AND the last infected person either dies or no longer tests positive for Ebola.

Timeline for Thomas Eric Duncan

Sept 15 - Thomas Eric Duncan is exposed to active Ebola by assisting in the transport of an infected neighbor to treatment (she died 3:00am the next day).
Sept 19 - patient departed Liberia with a route that took him to Brussels, Belgium, Washington Dulles, and then to Dallas DFW Airport.
Sept 20 - patient arrives Dallas DFW.
Sept 24 - patient first begins to feel ill
Sept 25 - at around 10:00pm went to Texas Presbyterian ER with symptoms, informed doctor that he had travelled from Liberia, was sent away with antibiotics.
Sept 28 - ambulance was called and delivered patient to Texas Presbyterian Hospital just after 10:00am
Sept 29 - patient was in Emergency Room for about 24 hours before being placed in isolation
Sept 30 - Blood sample received at 9 am CDT and at 1:22 pm results positive for Ebola Zaire. Positive result communicated at 1:38pm CDT. CDC holds press conference at 4:30pm CDT
Oct 8 - Thomas Eric Duncan has died and was cremated within 12-24 hours.

Timeline for Nurse, Nina Pham, who attended Duncan and became Ebola infected

Oct 11 - Nurse, Nina Pham, presented with symptoms.
Oct 12 - Nurse confirmed with Ebola, 18 contacts of nurse being monitored.
Oct 13 - Transferred to NIH in Maryland.

Timeline for Nurse, Amber Joy Vinson, who attended Duncan and became Ebola infected

Oct 13 - Nurse, Amber Joy Vinson flies on Frontier flight 1143 from Cleveland to Dallas with no symptoms.
Oct 14 - Nurse, Amber Joy Vinson, presented with symptoms.
Oct 15 - Nurse confirmed with Ebola, ## contacts of nurse being monitored.
Oct 16 - Transferred to Emory in Atlanta.

Duncan Contacts Being Monitored - September 30, 12-20 DIRECT contacts being monitored, October 2, up to 80 additional SECONDARY contacts now being monitored. October 3, evening news conference contacts being monitored reduced to 50. All but 4 are free to move about - not quarantined - just monitored daily for symptoms / fever. 4 people restricted to remaining in the home...no longer in the apartment but relocated to a private residence that was provided by a benefactor. The 4 people are Louise Troh, her 13 year old son, a 21 year old nephew named Oliver Smallwood, and a 20 something friend of his named Jeffrey Cole. http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/eb...ad-contact-school-age-kids-perry-says-n215976.

5 of those being monitored are school age children who attend 4 different schools, Emmett J. Conrad High School, Sam Tasby Middle School, L.L. Hotchkiss Elementary School and Dan D. Rogers Elementary - http://www.dallasisd.org/healthupdates

3 are the paramedics that transported the patient.

We do not know who the other contacts are. Would not be surprised in several of them are not medical personnel at Texas Presby who handled his case during the two separate visits to the emergency room.

Youngor Jallah, 35, is the step-daughter of Louise Troh and is a caregiver at a nursing home.
Mawhen Jallah, 28, the daughter of Duncan’s girlfriend, Louise Troh.
Kasiah Eric Duncan, 19, Louise and Thomas' son.
Timothy Wayne, 13, a son, is the one who was living in the apartment with Louise.

The photos of the power washing of the sidewalk had nothing to do with cleaning up the vomit from Mr. Duncan per the October 3 evening news conference.

Will update as more info becomes available

*********************************************************************

Below Numbers will be Updated Soon with latest WHO end of September info (which really isn't worth much)

Current "official" Death Rate (PFC) from this 2014 Ebola Outbreak (Known, Tracked Cases Only) - 9,191/4,546 = 49% (as of 10/15/2014)
Current "estimated" Death Rate (PFC) from this 2014 Ebola Outbreak (WHO 4X Estimate) - 36,764/23,897 = 65%* (as of 10/15/2014)

*Computation is that the tracked and better cared for cases are 1/4 of the number and have a reported PFC of 48%. The other 3/4's are untracked and lacking the same level of medical care resulting in the historical average Ebola PFC of 70%. When combined, the overall computed PFC is 65%.

COMPUTED APPROXIMATE "CURRENTLY INFECTED" = 3,323* (based on WHO Tracked Numbers) (as of 10/15/2014)

*Model assumes those that didn't die in the current month, recovered the next month. So using the WHO numbers I take total cases at the end of each month, minus the total deaths at the end of that month and that gives the number of people that will "recover" the next month. Cases - Deaths - Recovered = Currently Infected.

Important Sound Bites:

"Patient Zero in the Ebola outbreak, researchers suspect, was a 2-year-old boy who died on Dec. 6, just a few days after falling ill in a village in Guéckédou, in southeastern Guinea." - http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/10/w...s-breakout-to-an-african-2-year-old.html?_r=1
"over 900 dead out of over 1,700 cases" is suspected to be only about 25% of the actual (untracked/unreported) problem. (CDC Chief on 8/7/2014 testifying before Congress)
"More than 416 Healthcare workers in West Africa have contracted Ebola and more than 233 have died." (as of 10/8/2014)
"WHO admits (8/7/2014) they are basically broke financially and just a mouthpiece to help convey information. They have no extraordinary teams, supplies or medical resources to bring to bear on the Ebola situation."
"The WHO on Friday (8/8/2014) declared the Ebola outbreak in West Africa to be an international public health emergency that requires an extraordinary response to stop its spread."
"FDA on Friday (8/8/2014) lifts hold on experimental Ebola drug" [Don't listen to what the government SAYS, watch what it DOES - Dennis]
"CDC expands definition of Casual Contact regarding Ebola" (8/9/2014) - http://www.cdc.gov/vhf/ebola/hcp/case-definition.html
Ken Isaacs of Samaritan's Purse anticipates the number of Ebola cases to 'skyrocket' towards the end of August (2014) [It did - Kris]
Fukada of WHO said, 80 patients need 100 to 250 people to take care of them. In addition to front line workers need people to support them as well. As the outbreak gets bigger we would anticipate that there will be a need for several thousand. Need for international workers, expert knowledge and training. Running labs and so on. Not a static number. Will depend on the size of the outbreak. (09/05/2014)

Historical Infection and Patient Death Counts (PFC) for the 2014 Ebola Outbreak and Projections for Future Months

Mar, 2014 – Infected: 117 Dead: 75 64% - http://www.who.int/csr/don/2014_03_30_ebola/en/
Apr, 2014 – Infected: 215 Dead: 129 60% - computed numbers since WHO wasn't consistent about reporting this early in the outbreak.
May, 2014 – Infected: 394 Dead: 236 60% - ditto
Jun, 2014 – Infected: 722 Dead: 433 60% - ditto
Jul, 2014 – Infected: 1,323 Dead: 729 55% - http://www.who.int/csr/don/2014_07_31_ebola/en/
Aug, 2014 - Infected: 3,685 Dead: 1,841 50%
Sep, 2014 – Infected: 7,370 Dead: 3,611 49%
Oct 8, 2014 – Infected: 8,399 Dead: 4,033 48% <=== As of October 8, 2014

Oct, 2014 - Infected: 15,144 Dead: 6,966 46%
Nov, 2014 – Infected: 30,699 Dead: 14,122 46%
Dec, 2014 – Infected: 62,233 Dead: 28,627 46%
January, 2015 - Infected: 126,160 Dead: 58,033 46% <--- This is WAY past Option #1 on the "How Bad Will It Get" poll

Just taking the estimates through the end of 2014 for now. If it does continue at the new 2.-272 rate increase factor of cases and deaths each month then by early May 2016 (6 months longer at the new lower rate) the whole population of the Earth (7 Billion+ will have been exposed and/or contracted Ebola and just under 3.5 Billion will have died if the current 46% PFC death rate also maintains.

The new lower infection rate pushes the date for the 550,000 to 1.4 million number of cases (CDC estimate) 2.5 months out from January 20th to early April 2015.

Keep in mind, this is just a linear calculation and is in no way accurate in terms of a realistic forecast. A lot of other factors will likely slow or fizzle out this disease before it reaches a critical mass.

There will be people who simply never get exposed to the virus, and there will be survivors. There will likely be a cure or vaccine if it goes pandemic.

While I read MOST threads here on TB2K, I don't read ALL so I may miss something that would be relevant to this thread.

The easiest way to make this work is to keep THIS thread from getting very long.

I would like to keep it to only a main post or two with STATS and LINKS to other threads as necessary.

So let's try this...if someone sees new counts reported or new countries suspected or confirmed affected, post the info or a link to the info here. I or any other staffer will periodically sweep through here, review and consolidate the new info up into the first post above, and then DELETE your post that provided the info...just to keep THIS summary/reference thread clean.

THIS thread is for EBOLA STATS and to be used as a single source of LINKS to OTHER EBOLA THREADS on TB2K. The original source links and full articles and such should be posted on the Bi-Weekly Ebola Thread that Dennis started. That way if the original article is pulled we will have documented the original story with the original (now dead) link on the main Ebola thread(s).

Ebola virus has been reported here in the United States. The following is what my research has uncovered for what is touted to be an incurable disease. I do not know if they will work but considering the alternative it may be worth considering to have these remedies on hand.

VIRUS REMEDIES

NOTE: EBOLA VIRUS cannot live in the presence of Cinnamon bark or Oregano essential oils.

ESSENTIAL OILS:

Thieves
Cinnamon bark
Oregano
Cajeput
Melaleuca
Ravensara
Thyme

Viruses often hibernate along the spine so apply EOs along the spine, bottom of feet, and diffuse.

The above information taken from REFERENCE GUIDE FOR ESSENTIAL OILS compiled by Connie and Alan Higley.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The importance of purchasing high quality EOs cannot be stressed too much. Many, many EOs are diluted and have little medicinal value.

Should we be scared? NO WAY!!!

We have at our disposal the most powerful antibiotic of which I am aware. There are no known bacteria or viruses that can stand up to it. Many would think “Wow” it must be new and it must cost lots of money! They would be wrong. It is common Garlic (Allium sativum).

The is a good recipe for using this at Cauliflower Soup. You can have lunch and whip Bird Flu without leaving the table! By the way, Garlic is a killer of all viruses it has ever been used against – this includes Ebola.

Selenium Deficiency and Ebola Virus

During the spring of 1995 Ebola virus created havoc in the African nation of Zaire. Researchers studying the ebola virus found many similarities between it and the HIV virus. For example, like HIV, Ebola has the potential to create several proteins requiring selenium. However, in the case of Ebola, the selenium content appears much higher than in HIV. It could be as much as ten times higher. (17)

According to Dr. Taylor, the Ebola virus behaves very much like HIV. When selenium levels in infected cells drop, Ebola reproduces and aggressively searches for cells with more selenium, spreading the infection throughout the body.

The population of Zaire was found to be deficient in selenium (may be because the soil in this country is deficient in selenium.) This may partially explain why both HIV virus and Ebola virus are rampant in Zaire. Normal immune defenses against the virus is handicapped by selenium deficiency.

Selenium Reduces Bacterial Blood Poisoning

When selenium was used in large dosages with other antioxidants such as vitamins C and E it was found to reduce the hospital-induced sepsis (bacterial blood poisoning) and acute respiratory distress syndrome by 50 percent. (18)

Ebola Testing - RT-LAMP (Reverse Transcription-Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification) method

30 Minute Ebola test developed by Japanese (NOT IN ACTUAL LABORATORY USE YET as of 10/8/2014)

Japanese researchers develop 30-minute Ebola test

JUNYA IWAI, Nikkei staff writer

TOKYO -- Researchers at Japan's Nagasaki University, in collaboration with Eiken Chemical, have developed a way to detect the presence of the Ebola virus in humans in just 30 minutes. Professor Jiro Yasuda of the university said the new method is simpler than the current one in common use and can be done in places where expensive dedicated testing equipment is unavailable.

Yasuda and his team of researchers hope to work with companies to make the method available in countries hit by the virus. Ebola hemorrhagic fever has a high fatality rate and is seriously affecting West Africa, where more than 2,200 people have died in the current outbreak.

The team developed a substance called a primer that amplifies only those genes specific to the Ebola virus. There are five types of the virus, which differ in the base sequences of their genes. The team selected the six sections of these genes with the fewest differences in sequence among the virus types and made primers that combine with them.

"The method can probably be used on new types of the Ebola virus," Yasuda said.

To determine if Ebola is present in a blood sample, it is first detoxified to prevent infection. RNA is extracted from any viruses present in the sample and used to synthesize DNA. This DNA is then mixed with the primers and other substances and placed in a plastic test tube. Next, the liquid is heated to 60-65 C. [Note...the preceding steps all take TIME themselves to accomplish BEFORE the 30 minute clock starts ticking]

If Ebola is present, DNA specific to the virus is amplified in about 30 minutes due to the action of the primers. The byproducts from this process cause the liquid to cloud, providing visual confirmation of detection.

The RT-LAMP (reverse transcription-loop-mediated isothermal amplification) technique developed by Eiken Chemical was used to synthesize and amplify the DNA. The team tested their new method at a research facility in Canada. It succeeded in detecting the Ebola virus, as well as the viruses of Marburg hemorrhagic fever and Lassa fever, Yasuda said.

Ebola Testing - EZ1-rRT-PCR Test for Ebola

From FDA Booklet - EZ1-rRT-PCR Test for Ebola

The Ebola Zaire Target 1 (EZ1) real-time reverse transcription (rRT) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) (TaqMan®) assay (EZ1 assay) is for the presumptive detection of Ebola Zaire virus (detected in the West Africa outbreak in 2014) on specified instruments in individuals in affected areas with signs and symptoms of Ebola virus infection or who are at risk for exposure or may have been exposed to the Ebola Zaire virus (detected in the West Africa outbreak in 2014) in conjunction with epidemiological risk factors.

The EZ1 assay is intended for use only on authorized platforms by laboratories designated by DoD.

Testing with the EZ1 assay should not be performed unless the individual has been exposed to or is at risk for exposure to Ebola Zaire virus or has signs and symptoms of infection with Ebola Zaire virus (detected in the West Africa outbreak in 2014) that meet clinical and epidemiologic criteria for testing suspect specimens.

The level of Ebola Zaire virus (detected in the West Africa outbreak in 2014) present in blood from individuals with early systemic infection is unknown. Negative results do not preclude Ebola Zaire virus (detected in the West Africa outbreak in 2014) infection and should not be used as the sole basis for patient management decisions. Results are for the presumptive identification of the Ebola Zaire virus (detected in the West Africa outbreak in 2014). The definitive identification of the Ebola Zaire virus (detected in the West Africa outbreak in 2014) requires additional testing and confirmation procedures in consultation with public health or other authorities for whom reporting is required. The diagnosis of Ebola Zaire virus (detected in the West Africa outbreak in 2014) infection must be made based on history, signs, symptoms, exposure likelihood, and other laboratory evidence in addition to the identification of the Ebola Zaire virus (detected in the West Africa outbreak in 2014) by this test.

The EZ1 assay is for use only under Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) by specified laboratories and clinical laboratory personnel who have been trained on authorized instruments.

2. INTRODUCTION

The EZ1 assay has been authorized for use on the Applied Biosystems® 7500 Fast Dx Real-Time PCR Instrument (ABI 7500 Fast Dx), Roche LightCycler® (LightCycler), and Biofire Defense Joint Biological Agent Identification and Diagnostic System (JBAIDS) to provide Ebola Zaire virus testing capability to sites that currently perform PCR testing on these instruments.

All users, analysts, and any person reporting diagnostic results from the use of these devices should be trained in rRT-PCR on the specified instrument. Use of this assay is limited to laboratories designated by DoD.

Just FYI for everyone jumping over here to see what is going on....

I am simply pulling together all of the previously posted information about EBOLA TESTING since several people are getting their panties in a wad over "sometimes it takes a few hours and sometimes it takes a few days".

So I was going to pull it all together here and simply be able to refer back to here for the explanations of the various tests, their constraints and their timings.

This will take a while to pull it all together but most of it is buried here on a thread somewhere.

I am looking for the posts on homemade IV formulas and rehydration. Would like to print them but cannot find them. Not that I find giving myself a homemade IV comforting I do find knowing the formula to mix it and rehydration formulas very comforting. Seems like it was a combination of Salt, Light Salt, Sodium Bicarbonate, and sugar but I do not remember the amounts per quart or liter? Any directions or posting would be appreciated.

Superintendent says the middle school principal was screened by the CDC when he returned to US from Africa Superintendent says the middle school principal was screened by the CDC when he returned to US from Africa

The superintendent of Hazlehurst Schools has now announced that Middle School principal, Lee Wannik, is taking a week long paid vacation. It's due to a public outcry about his recent travels.

Wannik recently returned to Zambia, where he went for his brother's funeral.

Many parents had expressed concern citing the recent outbreak of Ebola in Africa; dozens even pulled their children out of school early Tuesday.

The Superintendent says the principal was screened by the CDC on his way back into the country.

We will be speaking to the State Health Department later today, and we're expecting a statement from the state's Epidemiologist.

Another four U.S. Ebola aid workers flown back to U.S. for monitoring

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Another four U.S. healthcare workers were flown back to the United States for monitoring for possible exposure to the Ebola virus, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Tuesday.

The return of the four U.S. healthcare workers brings to 16 the number of Americans who have returned to the United States from Sierra Leone since Friday, the CDC said.

That includes a healthcare worker in critical condition who is being treated for Ebola in a Maryland biocontainment unit run by the National Institutes of Health . . .
