He'll be transferred to our new prison, currently located on the dark side of the moon. It's where we keep Elvis! said reports from the Justice Department.

Ha. Or maybe, try finding some unimpeachable guards. There is NO possible way that a bunch of "insiders" didn't notice what was going on with him in his "construction phase"!

Mexico recaptures drug boss 'Chapo' Guzman, president says

MEXICO CITY | By Veronica Gomez and Dave Graham

Mexico has recaptured the world's most notorious drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman six months after he brazenly broke out of a maximum security prison through a mile-long tunnel, President Enrique Pena Nieto said on Friday.

Guzman, head of the powerful Sinaloa Cartel, who Pena Nieto first caught in February 2014, was captured in an early morning raid in the city of Los Mochis in the drug baron's native state of Sinaloa in northwest Mexico.

"Mission accomplished: We have him," Pena Nieto said on his Twitter account. "I want to inform all Mexicans that Joaquin Guzman Loera has been arrested."

The operation to recapture Guzman involved Mexican marines, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and U.S. Marshals, a senior Mexican police source said.

Prior to Pena Nieto's announcement, the Mexican Navy said a raid took place in Los Mochis based on a tip. Five people were killed in the standoff and six were captured, the Navy said.

A security source said Guzman was captured during that raid.

In October, the government said Guzman narrowly evaded security forces searching for him in the northwest of Mexico, sustaining injuries to his face and leg.

He staged a jaw-dropping jailbreak in July, when he escaped through the tunnel which burrowed right up into his cell, heaping embarrassment on Pena Nieto.

Dozens of people were arrested over the jailbreak, though details of who Guzman bribed and how his accomplices knew exactly where to tunnel into the prison remain scant.

Guzman now faces the prospect of extradition to the United States. After coming under fire for failing to do so the last time, Mexico's Attorney General's office said in July it had approved an order to extradite him north of the border.

An official at the attorney general's office, speaking on condition of anonymity, said his extradition would "take time".

Guzman is wanted by U.S. authorities for various criminal charges including cocaine smuggling and money laundering.

Once featured in the Forbes list of billionaires, Guzman's Sinaloa Cartel has smuggled billions of dollars worth of heroin, cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamines into the United States and fought vicious turf wars with other Mexican gangs.

'A SURVIVOR'

The kingpin's legendary reputation in the Mexican underworld began to grow in 2001, when he staged his first jailbreak, bribing guards in a prison in western Mexico, before going on to dominate drug trafficking along much of the Rio Grande.

Still, many people in towns and villages across Mexico remember Guzman better for his squads of armed gunmen who carried out thousands of brutal slayings and kidnappings.

After Guzman's first prison break, violence began to creep up in Mexico and the situation deteriorated during the 2006-2012 rule of Pena Nieto's predecessor Felipe Calderon, when nearly 70,000 people lost their lives in gang-related mayhem.

Guzman's reputation grew and in 2013 Chicago dubbed him its first Public Enemy No.1 since Al Capone.

El Chapo, or "Shorty", is believed to be 58 years old. The 5-foot, 6-inch gangster's exploits made him a hero to many poor villagers in and around Sinaloa, where he was immortalized in dozens of ballads and low budget movies.

Security experts concede Guzman has been a master of his trade, managing to outmaneuver, outfight or outbribe his rivals to stay at the top of the business for over a decade.

Rising through the ranks of the drug world, Guzman watched his mentors' tactics, their mistakes and where to forge the alliances that kept him one step ahead of the law for years.

"El Chapo Guzman is a survivor," Anabel Hernandez, author of Narcoland: The Mexican Drug Lords and their Godfathers, said shortly after his July jailbreak.

I heard he actually turned himself in. Wanted to go back in because he forgot to grab his rosary beads.

I guess El Chapo's thugs match up better against unarmed civilians than an armed military contingent. :groucho:

Still...this guy is as resourceful and slippery as they come. If the Mexican government can hold this guy behind bars permanently, it would almost be a miracle.

Obama was supposed to request extradition the last time he was captured. For some strange reason, he waited until a month or so before he escaped. I wonder if it's still good or will he have to do it again?

I was really glad to hear he was captured alive. I was reading this article yesterday that had me really worried

Mexican Shaman: “El Chapo” Won’t Return to Prison, Trump Won’t Be GOP Nominee

1-6-2016

MEXICO CITY – Antonio Vazquez Alba, known in Mexico as the “Brujo Mayor” (Great Shaman), predicted that drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” (Shorty) Guzman will never return to prison because “as soon they spot him, they’ll kill him,” and billionaire businessman Donald Trump will not be the Republican presidential nominee in the United States.

The shaman revealed his predictions for 2016 during a press conference on Tuesday, saying that officials “are not going to take the risk” of having Guzman “get away again,” so “we are not going to see him in prison again.”

Vazquez said Trump would not be the Republican nominee because of his campaign’s many “missteps,” but he acknowledged that he had a premonition that the real estate mogul would use his financial resources to make an independent run at the White House.

“He’s burning himself, he doesn’t need them to burn him,” the shaman said.

‘El Chapo’ Captured in Bloody Raid in Mexico; Will Return to Same Prison He Escaped From

Posted 10:31 AM, January 8, 2016, by CNN Wire, Christina Pascucci and Mary Beth McDade, Updated at 12:40am, January 9, 2016

After six months on the run, Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman will return to the same maximum security prison he escaped from last year.

Guzman used an elaborate underground tunnel to break out of a federal prison in July.

He was recaptured Friday after the Mexican navy raided a home in the coastal city of Los Mochis.

Mexican forces transferred Guzman from an armored vehicle and into a helicopter late Friday night after his arrest at the home in his native Sinaloa state.

Guzman's recapture came after his second prison escape in 14 years, making him a symbol of government ineptitude and corruption.

Chase through sewer tunnels

Guzman's hideout where he was captured Friday had been under surveillance for a month, Mexican officials said.

Guzman arrived at the house Thursday, and authorities raided it in the wee hours of Friday.

When the Mexican navy arrived, a shootout ensued, Attorney General Arely Gomez said. The Mexican navy said five suspects died and six others were arrested. One navy personnel was injured.

During the shootout, Guzman and an aide allegedly escaped through a manhole connecting to the city's sewer system.

Soldiers chased him through the sewer tunnels, but he made it to the surface, where he stole a car, authorities said.

He almost escaped again, but authorities located the car on a highway outside the city and nabbed him.

Guzman was shopping for biopic

Guzman planned to make a biopic, and his representatives had contacted producers and actresses, which helped investigators locate him, the attorney general said. She did not provide specifics on how the calls led to his arrest.

Some of Guzman's alleged accomplices have been detained as well.

A man in charge of building the tunnel he used to escape in July was arrested, along with the owner of the land the tunnel was in. So was an attorney who allegedly paid for the tunnel, as was Guzman's brother-in-law.

Guzman's arrest culminates "days and nights" of collaborative work among Mexican intelligence and security agencies, the President said. He added that his recapture should restore Mexicans' faith in their government.

Massive manhunt

In the latest incident in July, Guzman disappeared after stepping into the shower, slipping through a hole in his cell block and into a lighted, ventilated tunnel.

From there, he took off for San Juan del Rio, where two small planes awaited his arrival, Attorney General Arely Gomez has said. Two pilots were among the dozens of people arrested.

Since his escape in July, there have been reported sightings and near-misses. In October, authorities said they were hot on El Chapo's trail, only to have him slip out of sight, though not before apparently breaking his leg.

After his capture this week, a relieved President Enrique Peña Nieto applauded security forces.

"Mission accomplished: We have him," the President said.

Veteran cartel

The Sinaloa state native started his drug cartel in 1980. He became a powerful figure, leading a multibillion dollar empire that supplied much of the marijuana, cocaine and heroin sold on American streets.

U.S. indictments claim the organization used assassins and hit squads to show its muscle. The U.S. Justice Department previously sought his extradition to the United States, and it is likely it will try to do so again.

Daring escapes

Authorities first arrested Guzman in Guatemala in 1993. They extradited him to Mexico and after his conviction, sent him to the Puente Grande maximum security prison.

In 2001, he escaped using a laundry cart and evaded Mexican authorities for years.

Those exploits ended in 2014, when he was arrested in the Mexican resort town of Mazatlan.

Guzman was then sent to Altiplano Federal Prison in Almoloya de Juarez, where he made the daring July escape through the tunnel.

Authorities paraded him before journalists late Friday night, then put him on a helicopter back to the same prison.

Extradition for Mexican drug lord not likely to be swift
By KATHERINE CORCORAN
Jan. 9, 2016 7:52 AM EST

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican marines had barely faced down .50-caliber sniper guns and a loaded grenade launcher to recapture the world's most notorious drug lord when the calls started coming: Extradite Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman to the United States. And soon.

Mexico's leaders avoided talk about extradition following Guzman's capture early Friday, but even if they decided to send him to the U.S., the process likely would not be fast. For now, they have sent him back to the Altiplano maximum-security prison from which he escaped in July.

Guzman, head of the powerful, international Sinaloa Cartel, was presented late Friday in dark blue athletic clothing. He was frog-marched to a helicopter by marines, who stopped mid-transit and turned his expressionless face toward the media for a clear view.

The calls for his quick extradition were the same as those after the February 2014 capture of Guzman, who faces drug-trafficking charges in several U.S. states. At the time, Mexico's government insisted it could handle the man who had already broken out of one maximum-security prison, saying he must pay his debt to Mexican society first.
...
In celebrating Guzman's latest capture, Mexican officials showed none of their bravado of two years ago, though they made clear that the intelligence building and investigation were carried out entirely by Mexican forces. They did not mention extradition.

"They have to extradite him," said Alejandro Hope, a security analyst in Mexico. "It's almost a forced move."

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, a Republican presidential candidate, echoed that sentiment, demanding that Guzman be immediately turned over to U.S. authorities. "Given that 'El Chapo' has already escaped from Mexican prison twice, this third opportunity to bring him to justice cannot be squandered," Rubio said.
...
What happens now is more crucial for Guzman, whose cartel smuggles multi-ton shipments of cocaine and marijuana as well as manufacturing and transporting methamphetamines and heroin, mostly to the U.S.

The United States filed requests for Guzman's extradition last June 25, just days before he escaped from prison. In September, a judge issued a second provisional arrest warrant on U.S. charges of organized crime, money laundering, drug trafficking and homicide, among others. But Guzman's lawyers already had filed appeals and received injunctions that could delay the extradition process for months or even years.
