Favorite TV Cooks?

I like the Barefoot Contessa, southern lady (I do not know the name of the show), and Inside Dish with Rachael Ray. In fact what brought me to post this thread is that I saw Rachael Ray's program advertised. Tonight - Friday Night at 8 she is going to be on the Food Network going to celebrities homes. She will go to among others, Mariel Hemmingways home. Mariel will talk about the diet that keeps her glowing. So do you watch cooks on TV?

We love "Good Eats" hosted by Alton Brown. He goes into the science of cooking. He's funny and does some weird cooking situtions, like a spoof on junkyard wars building a smoker for meats in what else..a junk yard.

My three faves also. And I love to watch Emeril and Iron Chef although I don't typically make any of that stuff. I've made alot of Paula's recipes and they're always really good.

Is Paula the southern cook? If so I tried to make her bisquits the other day and they flopped! I don't blame her though! Believe me, it had to be my fault. Does your flour have to be real fresh? Mine is about 3 years old! LOL, a prepper, here. Old flour, does that ring any bells?

Forgive me I am kinda new at this TV cooking. Is Alton the one that makes weird candies, and even made cotton candy without the cotton candy machine? Or is he strictly junkyard? The one I am writing of was in a kitchen not a yard. Hmmm there are so many and so many new ones everytime I watch, that it is hard for me to get their names (I am usually very busy doing other things as I watch). I love to watch them though! Nothing more relaxing than watching cooking. It has a certain ambience. Blessed to remember my dear sweet Grandmother, OHHHHH to be in her kitchen! What a blessed sweet kitchen. How the men loved to be a recipient of that. "The safe" as we called it was a blessed thing in all of our lives. All the ones who were part of that age. It was a pie safe. But it really was only a small cabinet with a screen door in the kitchen. I knew when it was time to leave her (and my PaPa's) house I must make a trip to the safe first and secure my own love to take with me! Usually it was a double baked potato with chedder cheese on top. Along with the best big bisquit you could ever sink your teeth into. They were secured into my tiny hands and tucked somewhere for the ride home. Each bite gave me love and reminded me of the arms of my Grandmother. She was so sweet and I miss her now. I more than miss her worry about the children of today that do not have little the loving Grandmothers. Pray for the children of the world that are struggling and misplaced. Pray for each and every child to have a little bisquit and cheddar cheese potato to look forward to. And more of course!

There's an Italian guy, can't remember the name of the show, but he is dark and handsome and cooks all these wonderful italian dishes. He looks like an old boyfriend (whom I adored). I like to watch his show, but don't pay much attention to the recipe or what he's cooking.

Emeril

but only his shows after he has had a few spirits

He seems to loosen up and is fun to watch and likes to spice up his dishes

I like Mario, too. I haven't tried to make anything from his show, though. I like the way he explains how they cook things in different regions in Italy and why they do what they do. I like Al Roker but his show is sometimes dull. Rachel Ray drives me nuts. All that constant yakking and her goofy giggle. Eeeesh...lol. My little boy just adores Emeril and watches him alot. He cooks (what a 10 year old can cook) and wants to be chef because of Emeril, which I think is pretty cool.

Hi BeeTree, Alton Brown is on the Food Network. Can't remember a show where he did weird candies but he did do a show cooking garlic with Count Dracula, so weird candies would be something he'd do. He wears wire rim glasses and has short, blond spiky(spikey?), thinning hair. Anyway he's funny in a warped sort of way I appreciate.

Hi! I think it must be Alton Brown! I always tried to make cotton candy when I was a child. Loved it so much. Never did get the recipe quite right. Le Pages glue..Yeah right! My friend and I would put the glue on our hands and clap our hands. We got the stringey effects though!
Aruba, I do like Martha also.

Love, Love, Love, Alton Brown...Good Eats. My favorite is watching and learning why something I've fixed previously didn't turn out. Like cheese fondue, only one time it was a clobbered mess. He said I didn't flour my cheese, he was right!

Sorry to say that I have not heard of any of those chef's, excluding the obvious ones like Childs, Stewart, and Emile. Must be a Southern thing, on that other coast, or the gulf???

My favorite chef, whom I cannot watch since leaving Canada (show not aired here), was one I watched religiously in Vancouver, BC, by the title of "The Urban Peasant." Such easy and quick multi-ethnic meals he could come up with. You Western Canadians know who I mean.

By watching his show I first realized how many ethnic recipes have the same basic ingredients, only the spices and sauces change (examples being rice and lentils). I had been enjoying eating food from around the world, and that point had not registered in my mind. I now stockpile spices from around the world in my preps. Can cook up a hundred different delights with just a few varieties of basic foods, by changing the spices. Most of those peoples also cooked in some primative ways, and not in a modern kitchen, so they are adaptable methods/recipes.

Now I remember his name....Paul James (I think) the Gardener Guy. A few yrs. ago he had a cooking show on HGTV. Loved it. Even taped it if we weren't home. Good all around everyday cooking.

He even had one episode on all about potatoes, especially frying potatoes......Booger, did you catch that?

I love the barefoot contessa, but she doesn't do enough shows, so they seem like reruns all the time.

Paula dean is awesome, and I have made some of her stuff, just drool over others.

Rachel Ray drives me nuts for some reason. Like she tries too hard and why does she have to say EVOO all the time and then say Extra Virgin Olive Oil?

I like to wathc emeril but have never made anthing that he has done.

I hate the Iron Chefs for some reason.

Oh I so know what you mean regarding Rachael Ray. EVOO, yumm-o, delish... ergh! And now she has like, THREE different shows on TFN. It's like the Bobby Flay overkill. Paula Deen does have some wonderful recipes. The only thing I ever adjust in her stuff is the black pepper. That woman seems to just love black pepper - lol.

I did learn how to carve the turkey an easy way, however, by watching Bobby Flay do it. I tried it his way yesterday and it worked very well.

ARUBI, I have watched Paul James! He is a riot! He has his dog, friends, and children on there at times I believe. He is crazy! Fun crazy! Sometimes I wonder how these folks must live to film these shows. It has to be difficult to come up with all of the things they come up with. That is one reason I started this thread..in awe of their stamina and persistence. The Barefoot Contessa even has these elaborate dinners after all of her TV performance. She must be so tired and dreary after all of the TV stuff but she persists and graciously serves a big table of guests with gusto! They do such a great job! I hope they do not ever get disillusioned! I thank them ALL!

Rachael Ray is the only TV chef that gets me off the couch and into the kitchen to actually try things, so I would say that makes her the best---I love her enthusiasm (different strokes...)!

There 's some English Cockney-sounding kid used to be on the Food Network, would cook in a little kitchen not big enough to turn around in---I used to watch him too but I never knew his name---it was clear he was having a lot of fun, too.

And Justin Wilson was the BEST.

DocVan---a lot of the chefs you say you haven't heard of are on the Food Netwook on cable---possibly this is not available where you are?

The English guy may have been Jamie Oliver. I liked his shows and the way he explained what he was doing. What turned me off was the production of it all. Why does the camera have to be constantly moving and appear an inch from an onion being chopped (or whatever)? I've noticed it on a couple of other shows too. It's like it's produced by the WWE or something - lol.

Actually, I watch Rachael alot. I've got and tried alot of her recipes and sometimes I tweak them a little here and there, but it's all good. I like the fact that she uses some store-bought pre-made things to cut time. When you're in kind of a hurry, this is always useful. It isn't her cooking really or even her show that grates on me, it's her, but that's ok. Idiosyncracies and all that.

For simple explanations of why they do what they do and why things flop sometimes in the kitchen, I like Tyler and Alton the best of all. And Emeril, although I don't make alot of his stuff by his standard.

I confess - I'm a FoodTV addict!

It is addicting! I notice how calming it is after a hectic morning to watch the cooks on TV. Free your Mind, what is the WWE?

FREEBIRD,

Uh- oh, looks like you have discovered the root of my problem. I am not on cable, yet. Looks like I had better call them. Thanks.

I like the food that Rachael Ray makes, even though her EVOO drives me nuts too. I like watching her $40 a day shows. I like Emeril, but would never try to make most of the food he fixes. I absolutely hate Iron Chef for some reason too. I liked watching Sarah Moulton, but I haven't seen her in a long time. I usually watch late at night when I get home from work, and there isn't a lot of variety!

I don't think anyone has mentioned Jeff Smith, and I agree that Justin Wilson was the best, "I guaronnnteeee!!!" Julia Child and Martha Stewart.

Alton Brown, Paula Deen, Emeril for current chefs. Justin Wilson sparked my interest when I was in college... now I cook all the time.

I do not know if I mentioned it on this thread...

Looked back and did not see it however...I watched Paula Dean Southern cooking the other day and Paula it seems is getting MARRIED, to a Harley riding guy. She actually rides on the back of the bike with him and showed films of it. She is so excited. He must like her cooking! Best wishes to Paula. I tried her bisquits and mine flopped. I hope she does more bisquit shows and gets more into detail.
