What are your gardening plans for this weekend? Planting, weeding, harvesting?

We'd love to know what you're doing in your garden this weekend, got photos to share, share away!

This looks like an interesting project.

I have a few weeds to pull, and need to do something about my straggly tomato plants. Aside from that I have a project I need to complete this weekend.

A friend of ours was kind enough to give OC some cucumbers so I may make up a quick batch of refrigerator bread and butter pickles, but not process them as I'm sure they'll be gone within two weeks.

Here's a good idea for a butterfly bath.

This should be the last weekend of picking raspberries. It's a terrible chore at this point, the picnic bugs are prolific as I haven't been able to pick daily, and the fruit get's over ripe and the bugs take over. Might test out some homemade traps......

Pull the weeds in the winter squash patch. They're taller than the squash now (oops).

What will you do with your raspberries?

Going to be deep watering and getting out the shade cloths for the temps up to 102 that are planned for next week.

I hope to pull up some more garlic. The neighbor's cat got in the garden a few weeks ago, and trampled a lot of the garlic down. It's a very skittish cat for some reason. When it saw me walk in the garden, it was like a ball in a pin ball machine. It ran full speed bouncing off the fence trying to find a way out, and ran over everything in it's path.

I've never seen a cat that scared before. So what had been a very promising batch of garlic, ended up kind of scraggly.

I am going to take a digging fork and try to find the garden. We have had so much rain that the weeds have taken over much of the garden.

I am also going to pull some more garlic. I pulled all of the German White because I was afraid that it was going to rot from all of the rain. It could have stayed in the ground a little longer, but better to pull it a little too soon than wait too long. It looks really good, nice large bulbs. I also pulled the Red Rezan which was an experiment and the bulbs are small, but they are larger than the bulb I planted from. I have Music, Hillside, Roja, and one other I got from a garlic festival left to pull.

spinner, which of those garlic varieties do you like best? Years ago I grew a soft-neck type and made long braids of it. It kept for several months but I don't recall what variety it was.

Has No Life - Lives on TB
Gonna be 110 here in a couple days. Never been that hot in my part of Oregon in my life. My goal is to water as much as I can, to contain the damage. It gonna cook produce on the plants.

Littlesister,

This is the first year for growing many of them. I usually grow German White because it grows well for me, it has large cloves and is a nice mild garlic. DH prefers Roja, it is a very tasty garlic. This is the first year I have grown it and it looks like it has done well. The first four bulbs are large and have large cloves. This was the first year for Music, Red Rezan, Marjean and Rose de Lautrec which I forgot to mention. The Rose de Lautrec was a whim and as I expected it did not do well. Very small bulbs, but this was expected because it is a hot climate garlic and I live in a cooler climate. I think the Music has done well, but I won't know until I pull it. I have grown Hillside before and it does well and it a good flavored garlic.

The one I always go back to is German White and I will probably continue to plant Roja and maybe Music.

I always grow hardneck. I prefer them for keeping quality, flavor, size and how well they grow for me. I see you are in Alabama so the Creoles might do well for you, that is what the Rose de Lautrec is. It is a pretty pink garlic that is popular in France. I can't tell you about the flavor as I haven't tasted it.

I can update my experience with the various kinds as I pull them and use them.

It is supposed to be over 100 degrees all next week. I will check the garden in the evening after 5, otherwise, it is a weaving week. This summer has been nasty hot. I put in misters on the big pergola that extends over the back of the house to try and cool things down so I could work out there, but it hardly makes a dent. (the pergola is covered with mature wisteria so it is shaded, which helps some.)

I started a separate thread for garlic as I would love to know what to plant this fall for next year, and so the garlic info doesn't get lost.

I got mine online at Mist Cooling Inc. http://www.mistcooling.com/ My string is 50 ft long. It comes with clips to install, but you need your own screws. Set at 45 degrees from the ground. You can get other brands at Home Depot, etc. So far, my hanging baskets are loving it and the kids like to lay in the hammock nearby and enjoy it. It does get wet directly underneath. I just have a one lever on and off fitting at the intersection of the hose and the string. The kids know to turn it off and on when they want it.

There are several youtube videos on installation:

Thank you for the good informatiion, spinner. We use a lot of garlic and I planted a hard neck variety from the local feed n seed store in late October, but this spring and summer have been so unusually wet that most of it rotted.
