Hanau shooting: eight dead in attack on shisha bars in German town

Police in Germany say suspects still are large after two shootings in town near Frankfurt

At least eight people have been killed and five others seriously injured in two shootings in the German town of Hanau, according to local police.

The public prosecutor’s office confirmed that eight people were killed in attacks in the town near Frankfurt, according to the local paper Hessenschau.

Local police initially said that five people had been seriously injured, but later confirmed that eight people were “fatally wounded.”

According to police and local media, at least one of the victims was seriously injured at around 10pm local time when eight or nine shots were fired at the “Midnight” shisa bar on Heumarkt in the centre of the city.

A dark vehicle was seen leaving the scene. Soon afterwards, shots were fired at a second shisha bar – the Arena Bar & Café in Kurt-Schumacher-Platz – where at least five people were very seriously injured.

Local media reported that the attacks targeted two shisha bars. It is unclear how many suspects were involved.

Hanau, which sits in southwestern Germany, about 20 km (12 miles) east of Frankfurt, has a population of about 100,000.

More details soon …

HANAU, Germany (AP) — A man suspected of fatally shooting nine people in the German city of Hanau was found dead at his home early Thursday, hours after the attacks in and outside two hookah lounges, police said.
Officers also found another body at the same address, police said.
Police gave no details of the suspected gunman but said “there are currently no indications of further perpetrators.” They did not give details of his possible motive or how he died, or specify why they believe “with a high degree of probability” that he was the assailant.
The number of dead in the shootings Wednesday evening rose to nine, a police statement said.
Officers sealed off and searched the apartment in Hanau’s Kesselstadt district, near the scene of one of the shootings, after following up witness statements on a getaway car. Police said work to confirm the identities of the two bodies at the home was still underway, and they couldn’t immediately give details either on them or the identities of the victims of the earlier shootings.
“Thoughts this morning are with the people of Hanau, in whose midst this terrible crime was committed,” German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s spokesman said on Twitter.
“Deep sympathy for the affected families, who are grieving for their dead,” the spokesman, Steffen Seibert, said. “We hope with those wounded that they will soon recover.”
Earlier Thursday, police said that eight people were killed and around five wounded. They said a dark vehicle was seen leaving the location of the first attack and another shooting was reported at a scene about 2 1/2 kilometers (1 1/2 miles) away.
Police officers swarmed central Hanau, cordoning off the area of one of the shootings as a helicopter hovered overhead. A car covered in thermal foil also could be seen, with shattered glass next to it. Forensic experts in white overalls collected evidence.
Hookah lounges are places where people gather to smoke flavored tobacco from Middle Eastern water pipes.
“This was a terrible evening that will certainly occupy us for a long, long time and we will remember with sadness,” Hanau Mayor Claus Kaminsky told the Bild newspaper. Lawmaker Katja Leikert,a member of Merkel’s center-right party who represents Hanau in the German parliament, tweeted that it was “a real horror scenario for us all.”
Hanau is about 20 kilometers (12 miles) east of Frankfurt. It has about 100,000 inhabitants and is in Hesse state.

#UPDATE: “According to BILD information, the alleged perpetrator left a confession letter and a video. In the letter Tobias R. mentions, among other things, that certain peoples must be destroyed, whose expulsion from Germany can no longer be achieved.”

Germany shooting: Nine dead after two attacks on Hanau shisha bars

A gunman opened fire on two shisha bars in the western German city of Hanau, killing at least eight people and injuring several others, police say.

In both places targeted on Wednesday night the clientele were reported to have been predominantly Kurdish.

The suspect was found dead at his home along with the body of his mother.

Federal prosecutors are treating the attack as terrorism, with officials saying there is evidence the gunman was a far-right extremist.

Police say the suspect killed himself. The Bild tabloid reports he was a German citizen with a firearms licence, and that ammunition and gun magazines were found in his car.

According to Bild, he expressed far-right views in a letter of confession and a video but this has not been confirmed officially.

What do we know about the shootings?
The shootings took place around 22:00 local time (21:00 GMT) on Wednesday, and the first target was the Midnight shisha bar in the city centre of Hanau. Witnesses reported hearing about a dozen gunshots, and at least three people were killed.

The suspect then reportedly fled in a dark car to the Kesselstadt neighbourhood and opened fire at the Arena Bar & Cafe, where at least five people were killed.

Shisha bars are places where people gather to smoke a pipe known as shisha or hookah. Traditionally found in Middle Eastern and Asian countries they are also popular in many other parts of the world.

The shootings sparked a seven-hour manhunt, while officers searched for what they thought could have been more than one attacker. They found the suspect and the second body in an apartment near the scene of the second shooting.

Hanau, the capital of Hesse state, is a city of 100,000 residents about 25km (15 miles) east of Frankfurt.

Hesse Interior Minister Peter Beuth said the case was being treated as a terrorist attack, with the first indications pointing to an anti-foreigner motive.

Can-Luca Frisenna, who works at a kiosk at the scene of one of the shootings, said his father and brother had been in the area when the attack took place.

"It's like being in a film, it's like a bad joke, that someone is playing a joke on us," he told Reuters news agency. "I can't grasp yet everything that has happened. My colleagues, all my colleagues, they are like my family - they can't understand it either."

By Damien McGuinness, BBC News, Berlin

Until we find out who the attacker was it is very hard to piece together why all of this happened.

Germany has had a number of terror-related attacks in recent years. But it has also seen a number of serious incidents that were initially labelled as terrorism but turned out to be linked to organised crime or some sort of family drama.

That is why people here have been very cautious about jumping to conclusions.

The fact that the shootings happened at shisha bars cannot be seen simply as a coincidence. But it is still too early to speculate what may be behind them.

What has the reaction been?
Hanau Mayor Claus Kaminsky told Bild it had been a "terrible night", adding: "You could not imagine a worse night. It will of course keep us busy for a long, long time and remain a sad memory. I'm deeply moved."

Katja Leikert, who represents Hanau in the German parliament, the Bundestag, said: "Hopefully the injured recover swiftly. It is a horrific scenario for us all."

On Twitter, Germany's government spokesman Steffen Seibert said: "My thoughts are with the people in Hanau this morning, where an appalling crime was committed."

This attack comes four days after another shooting in Berlin, near a Turkish comedy show at the Tempodrom concert venue, which killed one person.

Gun laws in Germany are among the most stringent in the world, and were tightened further in recent years after other mass shootings.

I thought it was just "workplace violence".

German police: Xenophobia may be motive in attack that killed 10

Authorities said the shooter who attacked two hookah bars in Germany late Wednesday may have been motivated by xenophobia.

The shooting was classified “suspected terroristic act of violence” by regional interior minister Peter Beuth. The assailant, who has not yet been identified, killed nine people at the two bars in Hanau, a town 15 miles east of Frankfurt.

The gunman’s body was later found by authorities at his home, along with that of his mother.

“This was a terrible evening that will certainly occupy us for a long, long time and we will remember with sadness,” Hanau Mayor Claus Kaminsky said.

Police said there are “no indications of further perpetrators.”

Hookah bars are popular in Germany, authorities said.

Peter R. Neumann, the founding director of the International Center for the Study of Radicalization, said the shooter appeared to have had a hatred for foreigners and non-whites, according to his social accounts. The gunman called for the “extermination” of various Muslim-majority countries in North Africa, Middle East and Central Asia, according to a manifesto authorities believe belonged to him.

“He justifies his call for killing the populations of entire countries in explicitly eugenicist terms, saying that the science proves that certain races are superior,” Neumann said.
