As many of you know, DD is studying Spanish and International Journalism in Madrid Spain for an entire semester. Her and three girlfriends took advantage of a great airline deal ($99 USD round trip) and had a four day weekend in Amsterdam, Netherlands recently. Here are some of her latest photos taken with her Nikon D-60 digital SLR.

More pictures from Spain, Rome and Morocco can be found in the Artistic License sub-forum.

Enjoy!

Interesting architecture. I look at the top pix and on the left there is a building/house that is three windows wide. Probably no more than 10' wide.

It must be an interesting challenge to live in a house that is less width than my stall here.

Lots of wall space to hang pictures on I imagine since windows/doors only occur on the narrow ends of the living space.

Red Baron,
Thank you for the trip down memory lane. DH's family still lives in ND. Amsterdam is a great place to visit, but I wouldn't
Want to live there.
The Anne Frank House is truly something to be experienced. It is small and narrow with steep stairways and amazing artifacts that the families used during their hiding.
The rice table (Indonesian) is one of the great experiences food wise. Also, the herring and croquette are good.
DH will be heading home shortly to visit...I know that he will enjoy seeing the pics that you posted.

Do you have any more?

That's it unless DD posts more later.

BTW - DW's family is German/Dutch from way way back. A little Bohunk tossed in for good measure also IIRC.

Glad you enjoyed the pictures.

Thanks for the great pictures! I never got to visit Amsterdam while I was stationed in Germany (except for transfers at the airport, twice...), and someday would love to get there for a visit.

My husband ignores the fact that I am of German ancestors. His response to me "If you aren't Dutch, then you ain't much."

The Dutch still have little use for Germans. They have very long memories of the occupation.

By the way, are you a soccer fan?

Does too have a life!
Thanks for posting these. We spent a few days there a couple of years ago. Lovely city but those bikes are lethal!

If you notice, in the first picture, most of the buildings have a horizontal brace type device (in essence a wench) sticking out. That's how they get their furniture into those narrow buildings when they move.

Thanks for the pictures, RB! I'm glad your daughter is having a good time and getting to see new places.

Several scenes reminded me of places in Italy and Venice with those canals and buildings. We went there when SIL was stationed at Aviano a few years ago. The streets were so narrow and the cars and trucks were so small. Many of the houses were built right next to a major street (or vise versa). If you took one step out the front door you were standing in the street.

Not a huge soccer fan, used to play a little on a park district league. I did have a relative who played in the Bavarian Munich farm league system though.

Soccer is the national sport in our household. The world comes to a screeching halt when Ajax is playing on the tee-vee!

I hope that your daughter travels safely...and for goodness sake, tell her to not dress like a tourist. That was the main complaint that we heard when we were traveling. Of course, the people were speaking Dutch and didn't know that we understood what they were saying about those who were the object of their scorn.

If you visit Anne Franken Huis and are not moved inside then you are A. truly not a prepper, and B. cold and indifferent inside. I had wanted to visit since grade school when I first read the story, and finally made it with my lovely bride a few years ago.

My personal experience with Dutch houses is they are a hallway-and-one-room wide, and the staircases are for people with smallish feet and agile knees. Ships' ladders come to mind save that these twist directions whereas the ladders do not.

Wonderful, beautiful country overall. Very friendly - and very TALL - people.
