CHAT Good Grief! Strange occurrence with tablet and Google tonight

Oh, my goodness! Hubby and I were just settling down to sleep. I had laid my tablet face side down on my bedside table, and he'd turned his light off.

We were commenting on how new rules and regulations were going to make it harder for people to grow their own food, and I said "they really are trying to get us all into 15 minute cities!"

And out of the darkness came a voice explaining that "according to Wikipedia" "15 minute cities are voluntary" and I didn't hear the rest because I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

And yes, I found where Google supposedly had permissions to use the microphone "while using the app"... but I hadn't changed the permissions!

I'll tell you, it sobered up the mood *real* fast! We were enjoying our first really warm evening...

And then reality intrudes...

I've had a few weird moments this year with devices. Not talking to me. But things have showed up as suggestions or in my newsfeeds that I was thinking about or discussing with someone via phone. I'm afraid it's far more intrusive than we care to imagine.

...I disabled mine, but I seem to recall that like an iPhone's Siri, Android has some sort of voice assistant. I seem to recall "Hey Google" waking-up the Android voice assistant.

I do use Amazon Echo devices a bit (Alexa). One time Alexa went off and said something without me saying "Alexa" first: I think it was in response to a podcast I was listening to.

Siri, Google and Alexa are all "butt-stupid". Wait until the next generation chatbots become common-place on our devices...

Everywhere you go with an electronic device, its signal is picked up by all the other electronic devices within range. The setting to disable voice is only a switch to keep the display for voice turned off on the screen.

The camera pointed at your face notes what part of the screen you look at and for how long.

Games measure cognition and attention.

I was looking at panties online and the AI said they wouldn't fit. For real. I guess it pulled my grocery receipts.

And that is why I ban electronics in my bedroom. I like to read in bed, too -- hard copy books!

TVs are also banned. My alarm clock is battery-operated, no light (unless I push the light button).

I also think having an electronics-free bedroom gives me deeper and better sleep.

Yeah, my iWatch will do that every once in a while. Phone will as well if I'm holding it wrong. And no, I'm not kidding. The stupid Alexa in hubby's office will sometimes get involved if we are "having a discussion" on a topic. You have never been freaked out until Alexa apologizes. Geez.

It's so bad I've even heard a number of lefties comment on having noticed it, and thinking it was too intrusive.
..it's all even worse than we realize, I suspect.

this video may interest you. It's about the new mesh-network they are rolling out for android phones through google, Apple phones are already joined by mesh. With a mesh network thjey don't need your phone on or connected to the internet to track you, etc. Interesting video, I highly recommend a watch.

You don't even have to discuss via phone. My wife and I were discussing a new mattress while driving on the interstate. Both phones were laying down in "standby". No tablets in the van. She noticed later that mattress ads were popping up on her Facebook. I do not have Facebook on my phone purposely.
However, after we returned home, I was using a tablet and began seeing mattress ads on news articles, etc. It all gets linked by your Gmail address (required for Android), and I don't even use Gmail.

Devices are always listening and watching. Make sure to put electrical tape over your cameras when not in use.

Probably an update that "reset the settings". They are sneaky that way. Must say - haven't had too much trouble with the newer Kindle Fires, even though they have "Alexa" capabilities. If Alexa is shut off, it stays shut off.

Still, when I quit with the tablet for the night, I power it down and off.

Personally I rather like it when I get up in the morning,
The microwave always says good morning!
And the refrigerator says its supposed to be a nice day today!
The toaster reminds me to to take my vitamin with my morning coffee.

Even if you set your electronic to not listen, it still listens and sends the data back. All electronics with wifi. I'm even starting to wonder if there is a microphone on this new refrigerator. :bhrt:
Years and years ago….Glenn Beck said on his radio show kitchen appliances will be/ are, spying and listening
It was probably 15 years ago? Just guessing….
I thought that to be some pretty big Woo but I suspect he was exactly correct.

To add: And yes, he did mention toasters because I may have laughed :(

Did you tell your AI that is body shaming and not allowed?

The only reminder I have set is that Wednesday at 6:30 am "It's Garbage Day" cuz it's easy to forget, and around here, unless you want some critter to make a mess, you don't leave it down by the road overnight. It has saved me a couple times.

I'm not sure whether you are complaining about the 15 minute city or the tablet listening to you or the AI re-educating you on the benefits of the brave new world.

Whatever . . . you still took your computer to bed with you.

I was driving last weekend and had to turn on Google maps to try to find an address. While driving the voice said stalled vehicle ahead. Now how would google maps know there is a stalled vehicle?
Google Maps works by allowing users to submit "Drive Reports". There are buttons to report cops or speed traps, stalled cars, car crashes etc. Plus it mines the states/cities 411 sites. I have a fake gmail addy that I use for travel because Google Maps saves me SO much in speeding tickets. Especially through Misery or Missouri. OMG The air, hidden cop cars, the speed strips ARGHH I HATE driving through Misery!

I've had too many similar episodes to even begin to recount them here.

Yep. It's listening.

What you do with that info is up to you.

BTW, Rob Braxman's vids are good for those that would like a bit more privacy in their lives.

You said "cities", it was probably close enough for your Siri to engage and she searched and gave you what she thought you wanted to search

Why, Ms. Meemur, I'm shocked.

With no electronics in you bedroom, how are TPTB supposed to contact you in case of a real emergency?
Remember, those gadgets are there to keep you happy and safe. It's really for your own good and for the good of your community to have one in your bedroom. Think of the children.

Also, by banning electronics in the bedroom, you are in violation of every one of your software license agreements for all your products that you have on all your devices. They say that you must maintain at least one activated device within arm's length at all times. It's right there on page 36. You did read the agreement before you checked the box, didn't you?

Madame Wildweasel wondered why I put duct tape over the camera and mic of my laptop and have never bought a camera and mic for my PC. When I gave her a list of words to speak to her phone and watch the spam about those items come pouring in, she realized the issue.

wrote previously ... called Century Link for customer service ... and finally the "voice" I heard was muffled . I asked "Who is this ? ( or something similar) What's your name?"

It said "Timothy". I said, "Timothy, you don't sound human." Answered (long pause), "I'm not." Called ended by me.

TPTB will cause and/or let happen a lot of different crises to better stampede us into surrendering our liberties to consolidate their power, but letting the electric grid go down is not one of them, as they need it for their future serfdom prison to work, for control, spying, economic social scoring and digital currency, etc.

However, unintended consequences abound when some things are unleashed and set in motion. For instance, outside players taking advantage of chaos aren’t following the same script.

All our saving might just be when the lights go out for a good long season.

I think I can...
A few years ago I was working in my shop and chatting with a customer who said she couldn't decide whether to buy one thing or another. I jokingly told her that my mom always said if you can't decide, buy both. (It's true, she did.) I had my cell phone sitting next to me on the counter. A few moments later the Poshmark app sent a notification: "Buy them both."

As Creepy Uncle Joe says, "Not a joke." Freaked me the hell out. I deleted the app and made sure my microphone was turned off, but I'm not sure doing that even helps.

I am so uncool. I have never used GPS. I don't use Alexa and her friends. I have a simple cell phone. No fancy doorbell cameras. I drive a 1997 car which has no screens in it. Between costs and privacy concerns I just avoid such things. I can see where they can be helpful for some folks but I myself don't really see the need. I'm sure that my computer is still spying on me even though I do what I can to avoid it also.

I've been in one of our houses a gazillion times with no problems until last week. One of the residents installed something that looked like Alexa in the living room. It didn't respond to any of the common bot names. We had been in there over half an hour with the doors propped open, when the thing started a high pitch screaming and called a security company. The company called the resident. The drug dealers across the street and the junkies next door came out to defend their homie. A cop showed up and started harassing the dealers instead of us. We finally got hold of the resident, who told us the code to turn it off. It's been in there for years, they said.

It turns out the thing that looks like Alexa is watching, listening, and transmitting 24/7 to a company with human operators. It's still worthless because it waited too long to decide it was being invaded. The new resident is getting dogs. I'm trying to remember if I did some nekkid dancing when I borrowed the place last year.

Middle River, Maryland - A statement from the mother of a student in Glenmar Elementary School.

“My son goes to Glenmar Elementary School, he’s in kindergarten, on 4/11/24 he was completing a homework assignment on his school laptop. It glitched out almost as if someone was listening in.

I took the laptop and started investigating, I found A SCREEN RECORDING that was taken January 26th at 7:10am of a video that was recorded in my HOME from the school laptop on the night of Thursday January 25th .

I emailed Zachary’s teacher immediately with questions, I got no response, so I took it to the principal, Ms Neary, on 4/16/24 I saw down with her and showed her these videos saved to Zachary’s computer, her first reaction was “this is bizarre “ she was apparently going to send the laptop off to the IT guy…

I’ve asked to make a report with the SRO of the school, and been denied name and number.

The principal called me on 4/18/24 and told me”they found nothing “ and tried leaving it at that..

On 4/18/24 there were files deleted off of Zachary’s google drive @3
:37 pm….

On 4/29/24 I had a parent teacher conference with Zachary’s teacher miss Ellinger, I asked her “how Amira recording my son in my home without knowledge is helping him progress “ and she called the principal down, and that’s when the principal told me the laptops don’t record and there are no recordings.

BUT

I have a 30 minute screen recording that was taken Friday morning of a 45 minute recording that was taken Thursday night IN MY HOUSE. Recording personal and private conversations, my sons Amira assignment is paused and it’s still recording , MY SON CLOSES the lap top and it’s still recording audio.

I recieved a certified letter in the mail from Glenmar Elementary School BANNING me from the property, I had my lawyer reach out to principal Neary and she refuses to answer but she called me and emailed me after my lawyer tried getting in contact with her, and I told her she needed to contact him. And she refuses.

Watch your kids school devices. And watch where you send your kids to school!”
