Great Garage Sale Find - I think so anyways

I'm pretty sure I found a real treasure today at a garage sale but thought I would bounce it off of you guys to see if you can impart any wisdom or advice.

I have been watching for a short wave radios at garage sales.

Today - I found a Browning Laboratories Eagle Receiver R-27 and Transmitter S-23 with microphone and instructions and all connection cords.
All are in excellent condition.

All the tubes inside light up. I guess I need an antennae now.

Oh - the price I paid for the two (transmitter, receiver) was $25.

The woman's husband had died and she was just wanting to sell everything as quickly as possible so she could go live with her children and said 'make offer' and I offered $25 and she accepted it.

Did I get a good deal or did I pay too much?

I have wanted one of those since I first heard one transmit in the 70s.

All you need now is a D-104 mic, gold plated of course.

that is coming up in my searches as an older (ahem) CB but I am not sure I have the right searches...

Cory should be along in a while I'll drop a bug in his ear so maybe he'll stop in and chat...

Yup it is a CB.

You can open it up by adding a tuner to it. Sure is a fine sounding radio.

Okay - I am not sure I understand. What is the difference between a CB and a short wave radio?

The gentleman's 'handle' was taped to the front of the transmitter - but his wife took it out before helping me to carry it to the car. It read KM???? All I remember were the first two letters.

Ahhh..

Citizen's Band is a special case of Short Wave.

It runs in what is referred to as teh 11 meter band (27. to 28. MHz IIRC).

This is at present a non-licensed band (effectively).

Yours likely only handles 23 channels and is crystal controlled or "Rock Bound" meaning that it can only use the 23 channels that were originally CB channel frequencies.

But you DO have (if it is what I THINK it is) a gem. A REAL GEM...

Those darn things were SO clean in terms of transmissions back then, and SOLID modulations too....

i'm moderately jealous....

So - the $25 was a good price then? I will try to get some good pics of the set tonight and upload them.

seriuosly yes the 25 was well spent. Take it to a GOOD CB shop and have them peak and tune it for you.

There's a couple on eBay now.

One set has a bid of $100 on it. The other set is just over $50.

While I don't follow tube CB, I'm certain that there are collectors who do.

Track the eBay auctions.

One caution. Some of these vintage radios have parts in them that are worth more than the unit itself.

For example, certain common tubes have achieved ridiculous valuations.

that microphone is worth more than $25.

How much more, I have no idea but don't give it away.

Looks sweet. You might consider selling at a profit and buying something more modern/beginner friendly? On the other hand, "they don't build them like they used to" might apply in this case. Lots of hams around here who can give you good advice.

Thank you both. I will definitely give it some serious thought of selling it and buying something more user friendly.

I just wanted something to pick up short wave radio programs for when the grid fails.

I knew this was nice for the price but I am getting a better understanding of what I have and maybe I should consider swapping it out for something that I can just get some news when things hit the fan. That really is all I wanted.

This might be off base but check out this picture.

If those are the same knobs, that set of knobs are worth more than $25.

I wouldn't sell the knobs separately. That would be wrong but those sure look similar.

Visit the ARRL and Universal Radio (Google them) for short wave info. Short wave is listening on the Ham and broadcast bands, Ham is talking on them.

ETA beautiful radio. If you sell it I am sure some one will give it a home.

Wow nice old CB.. you got a great deal.. as that is in what looks like mint condition.

If you notice his CB call is even on the front.. I remember when my dad got a CB for our station wagon years ago (I think it was early 70's) and he had to send in paperwork to the FCC to get a call that was a combination of letters and your zip-code.

Ya got a good deal.. while not a full coverage receiver you could get some decent bucks for that on ebay and THEN buy something more modern later.

Check out some of the prices on Browning stuff on this collectors guide page.. your set is about 3 down from the top.

Wow - Thank you! That would be wonderful if I could get enough to buy a nice radio to get short wave reception.

This package even came with all the instructions and diagrams and antennae instructions and diagrams.

I am starting to feel bad that I got such a deal. The dear woman had no idea what she had.
