FORT MILL, S.C. -- Gun enthusiasts have just one day left to buy their guns tax-free.
South Carolina is having a tax-free holiday on firearms. It started Friday and ends Saturday.
Buyers can purchase handguns, rifles and shotguns without state and local taxes. Taxes still apply to gun accessories and ammunition.
Employees at the Aim Right Guns and Ammo store in Fort Mill said the store was packed with people much of the day Friday and Saturday morning.
Some customers saved anywhere from $20 to $300, depending on what they bought.
Several shoppers told Eyewitness News they were shopping to save money.
Employees at the store said they got a variety of customers who wanted to take advantage of the holiday.
“Some come in and purchase because of the (political) party change, some come in and purchase because it’s Christmas time,” Scott Sheppard said. “Some come in and purchase for some protection, and some come in and purchase because it’s what they do.”
The nonpartisan Tax Foundation research group said South Carolina is the first state to offer shoppers a tax break specifically on guns and the only one to offer a tax holiday over the Thanksgiving weekend.
The tax-free holiday goes through midnight Saturday.
Legislators this year approved the so-called Second Amendment Weekend over the objection of Gov. Mark Sanford. The tax break was tacked on to a bill giving a month long sales tax holiday on energy efficient products, which starts next October.
