Hyundai junk...

Just got back from the local Hyundai dealer. My Accent only has 15,000 miles on it and something went wrong with the brakes the other day. So I thought I'd go in and take advantage of my 100,000 mile warranty. Total bill for brakes and an oil change was $260! I'll be writing Rick Case a letter about it.

I was talking to someone else who was waiting for his car. He informed me that the 30,000 mile maintenance package will cost me $500! His car has 4 differant oxygen sensors on it. Only one had to be replaced. That cost him $130. But he's got three others that could fail at any time.

This 100,000 mile warranty (on a piece of junk) is not worth it. It's better to buy quality with a 36,000 mile warranty.

I was there a couple of hours. They only had one customer in that time period. As I was driving out I noticed he was going to test drive a Santa Fe. I yelled out the window: 'Buy a Honda. I'm tellin ya.'

Remember the Hyundai "Pony" now THAT was a piece of junk! I remember seeing ads in the paper for replacment engines, the YEAR AFTER THEY WERE MARKETED HERE IN CANADA!!!!!

Every once in a while you still see one on the road, held together with duct tape. They were especially bad up here in (road salt rich winter) Canada, probabaly because they were made from recycled beer cans.....

I think the only car worse than that might have been the Russian "Lada", it had a pretty short lifespan here too.

OK...whats wrong with the brakes....both rear wheel cylinders have to be replaced. They are covered under the warranty. I go back next Thurs for the following: 'wheel cylinders will be replaced, will also need rear brakes cleaned and adjusted & front rotors machined, cleaned and adjusted.'

$192 for Thurs. trip. What a rip off. I paid $68 for the first trip: oil/filter change, brakes looked at. The car has 15,000 miles on it.

$260 total for brakes and an oil change at 15,000 miles?

This 100,000 mile warranty thing is a scheme/rip-off. Look at any Rick Case bill. You will see stuff like misc. shop charges $4.65. It's just a rip-off /add-on.

Why did I buy a Hyundai? My supervisor bought a Santa Fe. Every other night he talked about that Santa Fe, Rick Case and the 100,000 mile warranty. So I got suckered in.

Better to buy a quality car that doesn't need a whole lot of expensive maint.

One of the worst horror stories I've ever heard involved my friends VW Dasher. Junk from the word go. Lasted six years.

Took the car in today expecting to pay $192 like they quoted me. Was really surprised when they handed me the keys and said no charge. Guess they didn't want me disrupting the showroom again.... :)

LOLOL - THAT's the way to do it sad to say. I hate having to get pissed off to get results, but that creaky wheel getting the oil is the only way most companies will give you any customer service.

I just bought a Toyota Sequoia and after your post, I'm estatic that I didn't buy a Hyundai. I admit their 100k warranty was mighty tempting, but just looking at the Santa Fe on the lot at night was enough to tell me it was inferior junk.

I call the Sequoia a pimpmobile. damn thing rides like a limo! Still breaking it in with fingers crossed that I'll gain a mile or 2 a gallon as parts get lubed and tolerances adapt. Either way it's a keeper.

The ONLY maintenance required for the first 3 yrs is to inspect things and do oil changes. A far cry better than the mandatory timing chains, etc at certain mileage years ago.

toyotas - can't go wrong.

Passinthru....good move. I noticed that the Santa Fe requires valve adjustments starting at 15k miles. And then you find out about the $200 maintenance package at 15k miles and the $400 pack. at 30k. Not worth it.

I'll be selling that Accent in the near future. Next time I buy a new car I'll start in the service department and see how much maintenance it needs.

For you power window fans...I was talking to a guy who brought his Sonata in...seems he needs a 'window regulator' for the passenger window. I think it was around $200...could be wrong on that figure though. You have got to be kidding me. Nope...hand crank is best.

Sorry to hear about the bad experience... I was no help, either. Just a smart-ass response...

Here's a link to a site where you can get info on recalls and TSB's: www.alldata.com
As for new vehicles, you can scope out some message boards specific to the brand or model. I post at two Isuzu boards whenever I need info on my '91 Trooper.

macten - we did that before we bought the toyota (checked service requirements) It was one of the deciding factors. Also, checked online for parts cost and availability, anywhere from cooling, engine, electrical, etc. My husband worked for toyota years ago, so he could tell whether prices have gone up or down. The prices were very reasonable on parts.

www.edmonds.com and www.kbb.com are both good resources for new or used vehicle histories, reviews, user forums, and pricing.
