Latest "map software" update for the Kona EV includes geofencing and geotiming capabilities. This is only disclosed deep into the T&C for the software upgrade; even the dealer was apparently unaware.

So now, for this car and probably many others with pushbutton start, navigation capabilities, and a remote assistance system, there is proof of intent to be able to shut the car off of it leaves a certain area or is operated in a specified time window.

The T&C specifically says it won't be used without consent *OR* except in accordance with the law, which makes the consent clause moot. The presenter is in the UK aka "Airstrip One", but there's no reason to think that the US versions won't also be implementing this, or haven't already. If your car has those three features e.g. pushbutton start, navigation, and remote assistance, go dig through the terms and conditions for the car. It'll be somewhere deep in the menu for the car's settings. You'll have to read many pages of legalese, but this is important.

Note that the selling point for this capability is that it will prevent a thief from being able to steal the car, or to track a teenager to be sure they're okay when they don't come home on time, but that doesn't mean it won't be used against you.

Yeah. Sure.

The NWO communist tyranny will not stop until we stop them.
We would have to hire the afghanis and Russians from the looks of it. Folks who already seem to be capable of kicking butt and defeating American proxies, and who don’t plan on ever submitting to the NEW WORLD ORDER. the Chinese have their own version already. And I suppose you could say that the Muslims already are deeply immersed in their own version.

with this smart dust tech and the current tech of drones and robots, it is fairly safe to say, the End has Arrived, at least till Jesus puts an end to all this satanic bull…

As I noted, the "or in accordance with the law" part makes the consent part moot, because the gov can simply pass a law restricting the use of vehicles, and then they can shut your car down whenever they want, and it will be in "accordance with the law".

Remember, everything that happened in Nazi Germany was completely legal according to their laws.

Neither here nor there.

Which ties in nicely with bidets refusal to restock our national fuel reserves... never let a crisis go to waste... new green deal means concentration camps for those that won't comply and reservations aka 15 minute cities for those that do comply.

I actually like Owner's expression.

"Gate locks only keep the honest horses in."

Think of that the next time you use your stamp/car/bank account/whatever.

I completely disconnected the onstar box in a mid-2000 general motors vehicle.
The car would not start after that.
I found one cable needed to be connected to the onstar box to let the car start.
I left the antenna cable out ...

My post above left me thinking… : nah, that ‘s too defeatist. Maybe this fits better, as we have been on a long streak of “never give up”:

The proverb "hope springs eternal" means that hope is always present, even in the face of adversity. It is often used to express the belief that things will eventually get better, even if things are tough right now.

In short:

"Hope springs eternal" indicates that people maintain optimism and keep hoping, even when things seem challenging.

What Does "Hope Springs Eternal" Mean?

"Hope springs eternal" is an idiomatic expression that conveys the idea that humans inherently possess an enduring sense of hope, no matter the difficulties they face. It expresses the notion that people retain hope and optimism, even in discouraging circumstances.

Let's delve into its core meanings and usage:

  • It represents the persistent human quality of optimism, the belief that situations can improve regardless of present difficulties.
  • It encourages perseverance, suggesting that as long as hope exists, there's potential for positive change.
  • While typically used in a positive context, it can sometimes carry a more cynical tone, pointing to the human tendency to maintain unrealistic expectations.

Where Does "Hope Springs Eternal" Come From?

The phrase "hope springs eternal" comes from Alexander Pope's poem "An Essay on Man" from the 18th century. The full line reads, "Hope springs eternal in the human breast: Man never is, but always to be blest." This poetic line emphasizes the unwavering spirit of optimism in humans.

Alexander Pope is one of the most quoted authors in the English language, and this line has found its way into everyday usage, illustrating the resilience and tenacity of human hope.

It would make sense that the antenna might be the "weak point" of security for the device.

How many times do you pass into a parking garage and leave the automobile out of "range" of the On-Star signal? Similarly when your signal is blocked by a large truck, or bridge or tunnel?

The device MUST be capable of riding through these "gaps."

The same gaps which the Authorities decry when they try to "find" a stolen or "car of interest."

Meanwhile, the rest of the "connections" to your automobile computer have to be maintained - at least according to the existent car computer programming.

It was Owner who commented on VWs "programming changes" which ruined the VW Diesel for high mileage in the US, but was "approved" by the US EPA as beneficial for the environment. His model year was the last of the "old style" program which could exceed 50mpg.

After that and for a while there was an active trade in "European Modules" - the question being could one save enough in gas mileage to pay for the imported module cost.

Kind of like 2026 vehicles having a kill switch that isn't a "kill switch" but is a kill switch...err sorry just a means to monitor the driver for impairment and ' limit vehicle operation'

I'll take that model, in burnt orange. But only if it comes with the cigarette lighter and ashtray options.
Comes with a mini-flame thrower standard, but you'll have to dump your ashes out the window..... :groucho:

I’m driving a Hyundai Tucson (rental). Other car in the body shop.

It has a speed limiter setting. Different from cruise control. I just heard the other day many new cars might be mandated with it. In other words … they can shut you down if they choose.

My son just got himself a 2020 KIA and it has that stinking info center video screen on the dashboard and I started really looking into this, there are a few people on YouTube saying this is a major privacy issue and most of the cars produced with this will need computer updates if it is able to access them and it's done without you even knowing its being done.
They say never connect your cell phone to your car and a good deal of your privacy will be protected. I do see some serious law suits in the near future over these computers installed in every car and they look like they were designed by the same engineer.

They should worry more about the rate their cars are being stolen.

This upgrade was slipped in in response to the ease of theft of Hyundai and Kia vehicles. The upgrade is very similar to what's been in GM vehicles since 2005 or so. OnStar has a remote shutdown capability built in. Cops track the stolen/outside it's assigned grid area and flip a switch and the car stops.

Yet another reason to buy maintain and drive older vehicles.
