At Least 3 Dead After Pileup Involving 75-100 Cars & Trucks Traps Drivers, Shuts Down I-35W In Fort Worth

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) — A multi-car pileup, involving more than 100 vehicles, along Interstate-35W in Fort Worth has shutdown the highway and left several people trapped in their cars.

Fort Worth police spokesperson, Officer Daniel Segura has confirmed that at least 3 people were killed in the crash.

The pileup happened after freezing rain and sleet that fell overnight left roadways across North Texas wet and slick.

All lanes of the interstate — starting near the 28th Street bridge, not far from downtown — are closed because of the accident that police say was due to weather.

Pictures and video from CBS 11 News crews at the scene show dozens of vehicles and dozens of 18-wheelers — some hauling cars and trucks — smashed, toppled over, and stacked on top of each other.

Officials say I-35W is backed up in both directions from Interstate-30 to well past Loop 820. First responders are calling the crash a ‘mass casualty incident’. Multiple ambulances were dispatched to the scene, and have transported dozens of patients to nearby hospitals in unknown conditions, but the rescuers did and are having are difficulty reaching some victims because of the literal pileup and the blocked roadway.

The exact number of civilian injuries isn’t known.

No paramedics or EMTs have been injured in the chaos.

While the roads don't look particularly treacherous the little bit of rain can make the oil on the roads very slippery and combined with black ice can trigger chain events like this. People don't leave enough space between vehicles and think that they can stop like they normally do. The big storm isn't supposed to hit until this weekend.

I have two daughters and their families in the Fort Worth area. Just texted them both to make sure they were safe. They said that school was closed because of the bad weather - so they are fine. How tragic that at least three families will not have members coming home from work tonight.

You have to drive on ice in Colorado or you don't go anywhere in the Mountains until late spring. It is dangerous and you have to learn how to do it but you can't drive on ice in Texas. They have never learned how to do it. It is getting more dangerous in Colorado with the Cali transplants who have no concept of snow, ice, and Mountain grades.

You are so right. People in the South should not even attempt it. Even if you are a Yankee and know how to drive in winter weather I can pretty much assure you the other drivers around you do not.

This is terrible, Lord have mercy.

Live coverage: Fatalities confirmed in 50-vehicle pileup crash on I-35W in Fort Worth, officials say

The highway is completely blocked and it's been declared a "mass casualty" event. Around 20 to 30 people will need to be transported, officials said.

This is a developing story and will be continuously updated.

More than 50 vehicles were involved in a massive pileup crash Thursday morning on Interstate 35W in Fort Worth, including several 18-wheelers, officials said. The crash happened as drivers were dealing with pockets of inclement weather across North Texas, including freezing rain.

A number of people remained trapped hours after the crash happened around 6 a.m.

Patients were emerging from vehicles at the crash scene as of 8:30 a.m., officials said, with an estimated 30 people needing medical transport. Several of them were in critical condition.

Officials confirmed there were fatalities by 9:30 a.m., but have not yet said how many people died in the crash.

Information and estimates were rapidly changing as crews worked their way through the scene, and the number of patients is "growing by the minute," officials said around 8:30 a.m.

There may be fatalities, but officials have not yet been able to confirm that at the scene. First responders said there are still some cars wedged underneath other vehicles, causing some of the uncertainty.

Warning: This video shows part of the crash as it happens. It contains sensitive content and explicit language:

A MedStar unit was one of the vehicles involved in the crash, according to officials.

First responder teams sent an ambulance bus to the scene to provide onsite care. The crash has been declared a "mass casualty" event.

MedStar told WFAA earlier Wednesday that they had a number of patients they could not move from the scene as an 18-wheeler had partially blocked the road and traffic has them blocked in from behind the crash.

It's unclear how seriously injured drivers/passengers are but details from a Fort Worth Police incident report, are alarming. Someone reported hearing drivers screaming from their cars, first responders had trouble getting those in need of treatment away from the scene. @wfaa

The accident scene stretched at least 1.5 miles long, with Fort Worth police reporting the scene at 1601 North Freeway and MedStar reporting it at the conjunction of I-35W and 28th street.

Families are being reunited at Riverside Center at 3700 E. Belknap Street in Fort Worth, police officials said. Family members will be able to pick up their loved ones that were involved in the pileup there.

All lanes have been blocked and the scene is not expected to be cleared before the end of the day.

To avoid the crash and major traffic backups behind it, drivers east of I-35W can take Sylvania, Beach St or Riverside. For drivers west of I-35, Business 287 could be an option.

I have lived in Texas all my life and have driven on ice too many times to count and numerous times over long distances. It can be done IF you know what you are doing, you have a vehicle suited to it and you can avoid all the idiots that DON'T know what they are doing. That last part is the hardest. Too damn many of them on the roads that should have stayed home.

I actually pinched a donut mark on my seat. Not the only time either. In all fairness Texas ice is really bad. When I was driving the Panhandle a lot as soon as I heard ice warning on the radio I pulled into the closest decent motel I could find. Within two hours their were no rooms left and you could watch the I-40 show.

Yes, you can. I’ve done it, even while driving a fully loaded semi. But you have to practice. A lot.
This is true, but you really have to know what you're doing.

Trucker Son drove through a blizzard and then ice the whole way (3-4 hours), but he knew what he was doing--he has stopped when he doesn't feel secure about it. (And he fell on the ice at the shipper's in St Louis, and is pretty banged up. All prayers gratefully accepted.)

I regret to say that most Texas drivers aren't that great at it. (And...on Monday when it will be 12 degrees and snowing, I have surgery planned early in the morning!!)

I once was checking out at HEB when I heard a woman behind me explaining that she'd driven to the bridge and there was this odd stuff all over it, so she parked her car and walked across. Our nearest town only throws down "kitty litter" on the bridges, and you're on your own for the rest. If we can get out of the driveway, we know we're ok, though.

People, people, people. There is a reason for keeping the correct distance between vehicles based on speed and vehicle size. Give those truckers room, they can't stop on a damn dime. I am so glad my brother is off the road now. My nephew drives locally but will never drive more than that.

We refuse to sign off on our kids getting their license until they turn 18 and they have to pay for their own insurance. My 17 year old is chomping at the bit but we just don't think he is ready to deal with all the asshats and dumbies out on the road. Just yesterday, coming north on I75 we had some guy try to start something with us and we were driving a freaking Suburban that would have squashed him like a bug. Yeezus people are stupid.

Who knows what started this disaster on I35 but you know it was made worse by some stupid and inexperience. I feel for the families of the victims but this is real life on the road.

At Least 8 Dead, Dozens Hurt After ‘Sheets of Ice' Cause Travel Chaos Across North Texas

'If you don't have to get out, please don't get out,' Fort Worth fire spokesman says
By Brian Roth • Published 6 hours ago • Updated 5 mins ago

At least eight people have died in highway crashes across North Texas after a cold front brought overnight sleet and made for treacherous driving conditions early Thursday morning, authorities say.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect through 12 p.m. Thursday for much of the Dallas-Fort Worth region.

Dozens of North Texas school districts are either closed, opening late or going to virtual learning Thursday due to the possibility of dangerous roads. Click here for the full list of closures.

Fort Worth
Five people are confirmed dead and dozens more injured in what firefighters are calling a "mass casualty incident" unfolding on Interstate 35W just north of downtown Fort Worth, where at least 100 vehicles collided and left drivers trapped, first responders say.

Mike Drivdahl with the Fort Worth Fire Department said firefighters were going car-to-car, looking for people in need of medical care at the scene near 28th Street.

At least five people have died in the pileup and 36 hospitalized as of 10:25 a.m., MedStar Mobile Healthcare spokesman Matt Zavadski confirmed in a phone interview on NBC 5 and later confirmed by Fort Worth police and fire officials.
As many as 100 cars are estimated to be tangled in the pileup, Zavadski said. Authorities say it will "take a lot of time" to clear the damage and are asking people to stay home if possible.

Rescues Underway Fort Worth Pile-Up Crash After I-35W Freezes

Fort Worth Fire Department spokesman Mike Drivdahl says rescues are underway Thursday morning after dozens of vehicles collided and piled up along Interstate 35W just north of downtown.

"If you don't have to get out, please don't get out," Drivdahl said in a live phone interview on NBC 5. "We have a lot of emergency crews doing a lot of work. The last thing we need is people who don't need to be out getting into any type of accidents."

Rescue crews faced slippery conditions and used anything they could -- sand, salt and kitty litter -- to melt the ice as they triaged patients injured in the crash, Drivdahl said.

A family reunification location was set up for families to pick up and meet drivers or passengers involved in the pileup. The location is the Riverside Community Center at 3700 East Belknap Street.

Drivdahl said crews expect to keep the interstate closed for several hours.

Emergency crews in Fort Worth are working to rescue drivers from what firefighters are calling a “mass casualty incident” along Interstate 35W, where icy road conditions caused drivers to lose control and collide early Thursday morning.
Dallas
In Dallas, one person died in a multi-vehicle pileup at about 11:17 p.m. on southbound Interstate 45 at Lamar Street, police said.
Shortly before 1 a.m., two people were killed and a third was hospitalized in critical condition after a crash along Interstate 45 at Illinois Avenue, police said.
Further information was not immediately available.
Police say there have been multiple crashes reported overnight, with some involving serious injuries and damage to city vehicles.

Arlington
By 7:30 a.m. in Arlington, emergency crews have responded to a total of 82 crashes since 10 p.m., a police spokesman said.
Most of the crashes have occurred on bridges and overpasses where people are driving too fast for the weather conditions, the spokesman said.
We had a patrol car struck after midnight in 6500 W. I.H. 20 by another motorist due to icy conditions. Thankfully officer was out of the vehicle during impact due to working a separate crash, so no injuries. Exactly my point.

IF ALL the drivers -- you and all those around you---KNOW how to drive on ice, it can be done.

But I defy anyone to drive through what's essentially an ice rink onto which someone has thrown multiples marbles going in all directions

I got caught in Dallas during a major ice storm maybe fifteen years ago. I sat it out at our terminal, but some people tried to go out in it. About a mile from where I was some moron tried to go over the I-35E/I-20 interchange on a route that took him over the highest overpass.

At normal speed. Off the bridge at the highest point with a drop of something over 100 feet.

It was hours before the highway department could figure out that they could back a dumptruck spreading sand up that ramp so they would have sand down to provide traction to get the truck up the ramp. No idea how long they tried to drive up that ramp with no sand down under the tires.

Fort Worth police blamed the crash, which occurred on I-35, on the weather -- freezing rain has caused slick roads in the Fort Worth area.

The accident scene covers about 1.5 miles, ABC Dallas affiliate WFAA reported.

"Expect lengthy delays," police warned in a tweet. "I-35 is backed up in both directions from I30 to 820."

"If you are involved in a minor accident with no injuries, please exchange information and continue on safely. You can then notify your insurance when you arrive at your destination," police tweeted.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

I give up.

Anyone can drive on an empty highway.

My first incident was when my son was a baby. My parents needed my help one Saturday morning, and it was a little icy. It was fine until I got near the big intersection at Norton & Goodman. Lightly applied brakes WAY back to the red light, and still slid into a car with a way old couple in it. Bonk. They said they weren't hurt and didn't want to make a report. The other one was when a blizzard started and Wegs let us all out early. Had to get off the expressway one stop before my normal exit because traffic was so jammed up. Got to a slightly sloping intersection near my house at Harvard & Oxford and just started sliding. Thank God nobody else was around.
