Why do I get the feeling that very few of those folks are going to walk off that ship? Those ships are microbial nightmares under the best of circumstances; now they have a VERY airborne monster stalking the ship.

The medical staff are taking the best tack under the circumstances, and anyone who isn't already infected probably isn't going to GET infected. Pain in the butt for all concerned.

Email sent out today by the VA.

https://www.publichealth.va.gov/n-coronavirus/index.asp

What you should know
VA is working closely with The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other federal partners, monitoring an outbreak of Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) first identified in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. Cases have been identified in the United States* and other international locations.* This new strain belongs to a group of viruses called coronavirus which can cause symptoms like fever, cough and shortness of breath.

VA has activated its emergency management coordination cell (EMCC) and is implementing an aggressive and collaborative public health response to protect and care for Veterans. At this time, no Veterans receiving care at VA have been diagnosed with 2019-nCoV. United States is actively screening everyone who has traveled in China for this new disease. Americans who come back from the part of China where the number of infections is very high are required to limit close contact with other people and report changes in their health. VA has been planning for this type of event and is prepared to protect and care for Veterans who receive their health care from VA.

What precautions to take
Currently, there is no vaccine to prevent the 2019-nCoV infection and no medication to treat it. CDC believes symptoms appear 2 to 14 days after exposure. The best way to prevent infection is to avoid exposure. These basic health measures can reduce the spread of infection.

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. An easy way to mark the time is to hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice while scrubbing.
  • Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when you are sick or becoming sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue (not your hands) and throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
  • Getting a flu shot is recommended.
What precautions to take when traveling
The U.S. government has imposed travel restrictions for all non-essential travel to China. Additionally, U.S. citizens returning from the region will undergo enhanced screening procedures. Generally, foreign nationals (other than immediate family of U.S. citizens, permanent residents and flight crew) who have traveled in China within 14 days of their arrival, will be denied entry into the U.S. If you have international travel plans, review this specific guidance for travelers.*

What to do if you have symptoms
If you have both

  • symptoms of fever, cough, and shortness of breath and
  • have either recently returned from China or have direct exposure to others diagnosed with 2019-nCoV.
Call before visiting your local VA medical center to seek care. Tell them about your recent travel and your symptoms.

To avoid spreading the virus to others, follow the precautions listed above.

The utter stupidity of such worthless antics shows the desperation....its a virus, being shed by every breath, spraying folks down with lysol is absolutely pointless.

I shudder to think of what insane Clownshow antics our affirmative action overlords come up with here to pacify the ignorant masses. I'm sure it will make the TSA look brilliant. Sheepdips at the entrance to Walmart...not a bad idea!

Public health experts warn U.S. coronavirus response could backfire
•Feb 5, 2020

I love how they keep saying there’s so much criticism toward the “Trump administration” for implementing a travel ban to/from China. As if A) other countries aren’t doing it?? And B) as if public health and keeping the virus to a minimum here doesn’t matter?

What a crock! That was the stupidest thing to watch. Grrr...

You are completely misreading this rally.

The rally is about capital outflows out of Asian countries and into US and European equities.

This has nothing to do with manipulation
I am working on the sarcasm disclaimer for peep’s that don’t know me very well.

Flight to safety worldwide always has inflows to US but the supply issues will impact the US. I think TPTB have a desire to keep a lid on info to prevent sheeple from panicking. We are in very early innings and any hint of growing spread in Europe and or US in the next 3 weeks will blow the credit bubble into something quite unexpected.

One idea I had for reusing N95-type masks is to simply rotate them. i.e. wear a mask then hang it in dry, warm (not hot) air for a minimum of 1, preferably 2 weeks before wearing it again. This assumes there are no tears, worn spots, or holes. My thought is that should be enough time for a virus to die if they on the mask and time for it to dry completely. Proper handling of the mask (wearing gloves) after wearing the mask would be required. It seems easier and cheaper to buy a box or 2 of disposable gloves than to pay the ever-rising price for N95 or better masks.

If this is a bad idea, please say why. It won't hurt my feelings and might help people with a limited supply of masks make them last longer.

Early in this thread, Melodi talked about Salt Masks. I will be boiling my masks in heavy concentration of salt water and drying. Salt breaks the walls of the virus down where it can't do harm. It basically dessicates it; dries it up. There are several sources of Salt Mask directions online. Here is one:

New surgical mask doesn't just trap viruses, it renders them harmless
Innovative improvement on surgical masks will make them effective by empowering them to kill viruses
January 5, 2017 University of Alberta

The surgical masks people wear to stop the spread of diseases don't work well -- that isn't what they're designed for. Pathogens like influenza are transmitted in aerosol droplets when we cough or sneeze. Masks trap the droplets but the virus remains infectious. Scientists took on the challenge of improving the masks, using salt to turn them into virus killers.

If Trump implements a travel ban, then travel bans are racist and evil. If Trump doesn't implement a travel ban, then travel bans are essential to protect the children, or minorities, or somebody. Fortunately Trump happily ignores them and does what's right and necessary for Americans first.

I don't know if boiling would be a good idea?

The filter on N95 and N99 masks is made up of several layers, each one designed to trap whatever bad mojo you are trying to keep in/out. The masks degrade quickly as more moisture is accumulated in the filters, which is why the better masks have the breathing vent.

I may be wrong but boiling the mask will completely destroy the filters in the mask and drying does not work make the filters effective, again.

Could be, but in the U.S. we don't need the government to tell us what's going on. Even though most Americans are clueless at this point, they're also tattletales , and they put EVERYTHING that's the least bit sensational on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and whatever else. If we were anywhere close even to where China was at the beginning we'd know it. TB2K members would know it; many are looking for it under every rock...LOL! IIRC one of our members (sorry can't remember who now) was taking his wife to chemo treatments at the same hospital in the Seattle area where the 1st U.S. patient was. That's been more than 14 days; if there was a hidden epidemic there, our member would know it. Of course it could get really bad in the U.S.; that's why we're here, we prep and watch for what could happen. But if/when it happens we'll be as ready as we can be, and I firmly believe we're far from that...yet.

Absolutely- if the government here is some how hiding a pimple on the arse of gnat, and we do NOT know about it at this point, then the fault, dear Horatio, lies squarely upon our own shoulders. This is a free society, still, the democrats be damned, and we know not only the "known knows" but would also notice those "unknown knowns." The info is available,
and we have the skill set and presumably the smarts to decipher the wheat from the chaff.

The idea of breaking patient confidentiality is alarming, too. Still. Land of the FREE. Constitution. ETC.

Would the US Government lie to us?

According to this site, the CDC has decided to delay and obfuscate data.
2019 Novel Coronavirus(2019-nCoV) in the U.S. | CDC

The CDC is now only going to release number every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. They will give an overall total, but have decided not to give state totals.
That's criminal. They have to tell local populations what the threat is, and its rise. The people have a right to know so they can isolate immediately. But, given it's the CDC that bussed all the third world diseases through out the US, is anyone surprised. Pissed is warranted here. If this is true, it's gonna get ugly. Wouldn't want to be in their shoes.

Re: salt masks...

I plan on sewing some sort of "pocket mask", out of layers of high thread count cotton, with the "salt insert (which will be removable so after washing and sterilizing (hot dryer or direct sunlight), we can re-salt-treat inserts and reuse the whole thing.

For N95, masks, I believe the original instructions said to separate the mask layers and only salt one of them, then (presumably... I didn't read every detail) reassembling them. The point is... there is no way you are going to be able to tolerate salt saturated fabric directly on your face skin! Ever go to the seashore, and then not be able to shower for a few hours after a swim? The ocean has a lot less salt than the mask will... you're going to have to use a liner piece.

No they don't. No force can compel them. They SHOULD, if educating the people were their goal, but they don't HAVE to.

The people have a right to know so they can isolate immediately.

Yes, they have the right, but they don't have the power.

The difference I'm thinking/hoping is simply letting time disinfect the mask. No heat, no washing, no forced drying, no soaking in anything, no forced airflow, no sun/uv exposure, just hang the used mask straps on a clothes hanger away from normal house traffic and wait 2 weeks. Would that put the virus in the household air? Is 2 weeks in open warm/dry air enough to kill any bad virus that might be on/in the mask?

edit: for clarification, this would be 3M N95 masks with the exhaust valve (to reduce moisture retained in the mask).

North Bend fire training facility designated as coronavirus quarantine site
POSTED 7:34 AM, FEBRUARY 5, 2020, BY Q13 NEWS STAFF

Fire training academy in North Bend, Washington designated as coronavirus quarantine site

NORTH BEND, Wash. -- Starting Thursday, Washington state will have a set location to handle travelers who have been placed under quarantine and can't quarantine themselves at home.

The state Department of Health coordinated with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to use Washington State Patrol's fire training academy off I-90 in North Bend.

Sea-Tac Airport passengers who spent time in the Hubei province in China where the outbreak started will be placed under quarantine at the facility.

People who are quarantined likely would only be there a few days before being cleared. The volume of travelers from that region of China will be very low, officials said, so it's possible this facility in North Bend won't be used at all.

This publicly-owned facility in King County has individual bedrooms with private bathrooms.
More than 500 people have died of novel coronavirus, the vast majority of them in China. The risk for people in the United States is still low.

Yeah. I'm still thinking on your approach. It seems it should work, doesn't it? I guess the bottom line is the two prong question: What do you think your viral load was to begin with, and How willing are you to pay the price if you're wrong?
I can see lots of situations where I would opt personally for your approach. I would probably try to do my air out in sunshine, given the disinfecting benefits it provides- but- then moisture issues might increase... I just do not know. Hard sober decisions may face us though, mighten they? : (

Hi Summer, I would suggest you reconsider this salt mask idea. What you really need is to acquire some cheap HEPA filters and cut out inserts for your previously sterilized masks. YMMV, Scotty

Two more people tested in NYC for deadly coronavirus

Two more people tested in NYC for deadly coronavirus
By Julia Marsh and Vincent Barone

The coronavirus

The coronavirusReuters
Two more people in New York City are being tested for the new coronavirus after recently returning from China and displaying symptoms of the deadly disease, the city announced Wednesday.

“New York City is on high alert and prepared to handle any confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio in a statement. “My message to New Yorkers remains the same: if you have the travel history and are exhibiting symptoms, please see your health provider immediately.”

Both patients are under 40 years old and recently traveled from China, and mark the fourth and fifth people to be tested for the virus in the city.

Only one of the new patients has been hospitalized because “the other did not have symptoms severe enough to require hospitalization,” the city said.
The second person will nevertheless remain under “appropriate isolation precautions” and be subjected to daily monitoring from the city’s Health Department, officials said.

The arrangement, following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, means the person must stay at home and wash their hands often, a city Health Department spokesman said.

The person is advised not to share household items or use public transportation, among other measures, the spokesman added.

No cases have been confirmed yet in New York City. The first patient to be tested in the Big Apple came back negative on Tuesday, and a second was cleared Wednesday, officials said.

One other patient is still awaiting their results.

There have been more than 500 deaths linked to the coronavirus amid roughly 20,000 cases documented worldwide.

“We are fortunate that the test results from our first person under investigation came back negative,” said Health Commissioner Oxiris Barbot in a statement, “but we expect to see more people presenting to health care facilities with symptoms of the novel coronavirus.”

All,
I just received a email from our main vendor of o-rings and seals letting us know that they will do everything they can to stem off supply disruptions due to the on going crisis in China but unless the corona virus issue is resolved quickly that there will likely be a disruption in the supply chain.
Of course we at TB2K all know this.
That said, you might want to buy extra wear parts that you need for your vehicles. Oil filters, air filters, tune up parts, head lights, turn signal bulbs, belts hoses, even a extra set of tires as most tires are now made in China.
Especially serpentine belts, as someone kindly reminded me on this thread a few pages ago.

The CDC has recently decided to limit the Coronavirus infection statistics within the United States.

I have taken the liberty to create a Whitehouse petition to require the CDC to release the information in a timely and detailed manner. Here's the link to the petition and the text of the petition. I highly recommend that you sign the petition.

Beijing city now bars caterers, individuals from organizing group gatherings, prior arrangements should be canceled or postponed, notes @chengevelyn. Rural collectives must also not organize banquets, whether for festivals, birthdays or school promotions. http://www.beijing.gov.cn/zhengce/zcjd/202002/t20200205_1625246.html …
It won't be long till they quarantine the whole city, then will they lose control of the other provinces? This may become a continuity of government issue soon.

This too shall pass.
The aerosol spray may be to kill the flies that are crawling on dead bodies, then might fly out the windows and go into homes of healthy people and crawl on them, spreading the virus.

At this time of year? I’ve seen snow in a lot of the pictures, and people are wearing big puffy jackets. I wouldn’t think flies would be an issue right now in most of China.
