The coronavirus epidemic could spread to about two-thirds of the world’s population if it cannot be controlled, according to Hong Kong’s leading public health epidemiologist.

Even if the general fatality rate is as low as 1%, which Leung thinks is possible once milder cases are taken into account, the death toll would be massive.

“Sixty per cent of the world’s population is an awfully big number”

The overriding question is to figure out the size and shape of the iceberg.

Most experts thought that each person infected would go on to transmit the virus to about 2.5 other people. That gave an “attack rate” of 60-80%.

Even if the general fatality rate is as low as 1%, which Leung thinks is possible once milder cases are taken into account, the death toll would be massive.

Prof. Gabriel Leung is one of the world’s experts on coronavirus epidemics, played a major role in the Sars outbreak in 2002-03, and works closely with other leading scientists at Imperial College London and Oxford University.

===

With a mortality rate of 1% = > 100,000,000 deaths.

Consider a one percent CFR is with health care systems fully functional.

.
With China’s 15 hundred million people, that number would barely be missed...

Wow, how incredibly disrespectful and judgmental. You are my newest recipient of the Ignore Award. Congrats.

ETA: I guess one could interpret your comment two different ways: 1) Our beloved, deceased elders were God loving people and put Him first in all things, or 2) Our beloved elders were not practical, put their heads in the sand and blindly trusted "Jesus" to save them.

I took it as the latter, given some of your posts. My apologies if I misinterpreted. Either way, the shiny award is yours to keep. : )

Yer right, Ma'am... Ah'm the squeeky wheel, here... Pack heavy, an' walk real light. Yuh see, folks cain't get their brains wrapped aroun' this. THEY is responsible fer their safety. Not the cops, not their family er neighbors. Nope, they are. Th Cavalry ain't comin' over th' hill, an' neither Super Man or Super Girl is gonna swoop down ta save yuh. Tha's why I only recommend double action revolvers. Ain't time ta turn yuh inta a rocket scientist. Revolvers, th' "original" point an' click interface... Like me- dirt simple.

Ah'm sure you're geared-up, trained-up, an' rarin' ta go. Shucks, yuh probly could outshoot me! But most folks don't know which end th' bullet comes outta... When "friends" er "family" (very distant in ways o' thinkin') come by fer yer largess, don't hesitate ta shoot 'em- if necessary... He, or she, who hesitates is dead... Ain't no sich thing as "winnin' er losin'." Yer either alive 'er dead.

Now some Christians, an' I'm related ta bunch, don't cotton ta ma way o' thinkin'. In ma mind, I've already said, "Adios" an' "Vaya Con Dios" They've made their decisions...

Now remember, if'n yuh have ta drop th' hammer, don't entertain "survivors remorse." If'n yer in Heaven, yer no earthly good..." God don't need yuh in The Choir right now...

Want an' hope ta see yuh an' yers on th' other side...

You may want to rethink that friendship...
People remember that you warned them and show up at your home. I have no use for people who have been warned, yet do nothing.
^^^This. I hate that things have gotten to this point, but I find that I can't carry on a truly intimate friendship with folks who are clueless because we simply don't look at anything the same way. When it comes to stuff like this, it really does affect everything because it indicates how a person thinks. These same folks will become a danger to your family when they become desperate.

WHO accused of ‘delaying’ response to coronavirus outbreak to appease China
As the number of coronavirus deaths spike, the World Health Organisations has been accused of “delaying” its response for a sinister reason.
news.com.auFebruary 16, 20209:56am

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has been accused of “delaying” its response to the coronavirus outbreak in an attempt to appease China.

By the time the UN agency declared a global health emergency on January 30, the virus had already spread well beyond China.

The WHO says it first heard reports of a previously-unknown virus in Wuhan, the epicentre of the outbreak, on December 31 last year.

It’s estimated to have started in early December, but local Chinese officials sought to play down the virus so as not to attract the ire of the Chinese Communist Party.

Public health experts suspect that before the meeting on January 23, China tried to downplay the virus and urged the agency not to designate it a “public health emergency of international concern”, according to The Times. The WHO has denied influence claims.

Dr John Ashton, one of the UK’s leading public health specialists, said the WHO “failed to declare a global public health emergency in a timely way”.

c3e97cea08e6aad8fdaf0a575d7507f1

It comes as the number of deaths from the coronavirus has skyrocketed to 1527, with over 67,000 infections worldwide.

66,492 of those cases are based in mainland China, with 338 in Japan, 72 in Singapore, 56 in Hong Kong and 15 in Australia.

The agency argues it didn’t declare a global emergency earlier because there was no evidence of human-to-human transmission outside China.

China is a key strategic partner of the WHO and its financial backing is important to the agency’s future — particularly after the US, its top donor, last week said it wants to cut its contribution by 53 per cent.

The WHO has also faced scrutiny for its praise of China, having hailed the country’s “extraordinary” effort to tackle the epidemic.

Economist Defence Editor Shashank Joshi tweeted a photo of the coronavirus panel at the Munich Security Conference, saying the WHO’s representative was “absolutely” gushing over China.

Coronoavirus panel at #MSC2020. WHO rep absolutely gushes over China. "The people of China feel protected ... the ultimate social contract. The government of China is honouring that contract with it's people. We all need to take a step back and admire what's happened" pic.twitter.com/6buyQCpIbe
— Shashank Joshi (@shashj) February 15, 2020
According to Joshi, only one leader at the conference — Human Rights Watch Executive Director Ken Roth — was critical of China’s response to the virus.

.@KenRoth is the only one to sound a critical note on the Chinese response. "If you read the press there are big problems". WHO rep finally shamed into mentioning "due respect for human rights". But then notes, pointedly, how "some countries" overreacted to terrorism. pic.twitter.com/eq6U7LfAo9
— Shashank Joshi (@shashj) February 15, 2020
One adviser to the WHO told The Times: “(The agency) has great difficulty in being openly critical of a member state as its only real power is persuasion.

“I suspect praising China for their response was the best way to keep the Chinese on board.”

FIRST CORONAVIRUS DEATH IN EUROPE

Meanwhile, an 80-year-old Chinese tourist infected with the coronavirus has died in France, the first fatality in Europe and the fourth outside mainland China.

The Chinese man died at the Bichat hospital in Paris of a lung infection due to the flu-like virus, authorities said on Saturday.

“We have to get our health system ready to face a possible pandemic propagation of the virus, and therefore the spreading of the virus across France,” Health Minister Agnes Buzyn said.

British mathematical epidemiology expert Robin Thompson said that with nearly 50 cases in Europe, a death was not surprising.

“The most important thing to point out, however, is that there still hasn’t been sustained person-to-person transmission in Europe,” he said.

In China some cities remain in lockdown, streets are deserted, employees are nervous, and travel bans and quarantine orders are in place around the country.

Those returning to Beijing from the New Year holiday have been ordered to undergo a 14-day self-quarantine to prevent the spread of the virus.

Many factories are yet to re-open, disrupting supply chains for everyone from smartphone makers to car manufacturers.

World Health Organisation chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said it was impossible to tell where the epidemic will spread.

“We are concerned by the continued increase in the number of cases in China,” Tedros told the Munich Security Conference in Germany.

“We are concerned by the lack of urgency in funding the response from the international community.

“Most of all, we are concerned about the potential havoc this virus could wreak in countries with weaker health systems.”

The biggest cluster outside China has been on cruise ship the Diamond Princess, quarantined off Japan’s Yokohama.

Out of about 3700 passengers and crew on board, 285 people have tested positive and been sent to hospital.

The US said on Saturday it plans to send an aircraft to pick up American passengers and take them back home where they face another two weeks of isolation “out of an abundance of caution”.

An 83-year-old American woman from the Westerdam cruise ship, which finally docked in Cambodia on Thursday, tested positive for the coronavirus on landing in Malaysia, health authorities there said on Saturday.

US President Donald Trump thanked “beautiful” Cambodia for taking the castaway cruise ship in a rare message to a nation that has often been at odds with Washington.

In Hong Kong, which has seen months of anti-Beijing protests, hundreds marched on Saturday to demand full closure of the border with mainland China and to oppose plans to turn some buildings into quarantine hubs.

The sickness, now officially labelled Covid-19, has killed around two per cent of those infected. Cases have spread faster than other respiratory virus this century.

Saved, to glorify God.
People who are, or have relatives who are at GREATER RISK of contracting coronavirus and then infecting their whole family before they are aware they carry the disease?
LET’s think about it so we recognize and take greater precautions if we or one of our family.
I’ll list all I can think of, PLEASE ADD any I miss to the list:
HIGHER RISK WORKERS & other People:

*Health care workers, patients, and medical support staff, especially hospital and traveling home health workers.
Dentists & dental staff, and their patients
Airline stewardesses and stewards
*Nursing Home workers and patients.
Teachers, school children,
*Taxi and Uber drivers, “ride share” commuters, bus drivers,
*beauticians, barbers, prostitutes,
*mailmen, bank tellers, cashiers, bartenders, waitresses
*Police, Prisoners,
* military, Ambulance medics,
*First responders, Funeral workers
*tattoo artists and those who patronize them
Masseuses, Sports and Personal “Trainers”
Those who patronize “Gyms” & Exercise facilities
Hotel workers, especially cleaning staff

the families of above workers....

*I have one daughter who wears three hats as a Hospital head nurse/ER Triage nurse/cardiac nurse
* I have another daughter whose husband works as mechanical/electrical maintenance in a large hospital and
*my eldest daughter who, thank God, switched careers from pharmacy tech to Paramedic then to Paralegal but now works for Amazon AT HOME, for them in some kind of loss prevention and mitigation investigating.

So like most people here, there is an avenue of accessibility for corona virus to touch my life even if I try to isolate myself as much as I can as a 75 year old who has to pick up meds at the hospital and because of underlying health problems cant avoid at least a couple of doctor appointments a year.

Pentagon to extend availability of 4 military bases to help with coronavirus efforts: official

The Pentagon on Saturday said it will extend the availability of four military installations to act as temporary housing through March 15 in an effort to help the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) manage the novel coronavirus, now known as COVID-19.

Lt. Col. Chris Mitchell, a Defense Department spokesman, confirmed the move to Fox News and said the Pentagon will continue to assist HHS by providing support at the following installations: Travis Air Force Base, Calif.; Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas; Fort Carson, Colo., and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif.

The Defense Department will also provide necessary equipment for passenger and cargo handling, a facility for briefing passengers, office space for 50 HHS personnel, equipment, bedding and linens, as available, Mitchell said.

HOW DANGEROUS IS CORONAVIRUS?

Josh Hawley says US still can't trust Chinese government on coronavirus Video
HHS will continue to be responsible for the care of all the evacuees, including supervision, transportation, security (including limiting the movement of the evacuees on the military installations), meals, clothing, communications, linens and laundry services, and routine or specialized medical services at the local civilian hospital, he said.

In addition, it will also take on the provision, handling and disposal of hazardous materials, and oversee the decontamination of Defense Department facilities; HHS will provide and arrange for custodial services and any necessary grounds, Mitchell explained.

No Pentagon civilian employees, military personnel or contractor personnel will be involved in these services, he said.

Defense Department personnel will not have contact with evacuees and will minimize contact with personnel supporting the quarantine and/or isolation, the Pentagon said, adding that HHS will ensure no evacuated personnel are transferred to any installation if they are infected or ill.

Any evacuees who are symptomatic, or become symptomatic, will be transferred to an off-base local civilian medical facility, Mitchell added.

As of Friday, the total number of deaths from the virus stood at 1,523 globally and 66,492 confirmed cases in China, according to the country's National Health Commission.

correct. and it might be helpful to adopt a different attitude about self quarantine.
you are not locking yourself in to protect others from getting the virus because you do not have it.
you are actually quarantining the rest of the world . . . until they prove they don't have it.
you are not quarantining yourself . . . you are quarantining "THEY"
I believe self-isolation would be a better fit.

Every empire, especially China’s, had fallen in a cold spell, like the upcoming GSM. They have lost food production in pork and chickens. What can the virus do to their food production, like rice? Can they import food sufficient to make up for the livestock losses? How bad will the industrial shutdown hurt them? Can we restore our manufacturing fast enough to knock the wind out of them?

An army fights on its stomach. The leaders and military at the top have for years been saying that they are training for the long game. To wipe us out and/or take us over. Since it is GSM time and their empire is about shot anyway, let it fall. Don't import a thing. No food, no meds, no tech- nothing. They have stolen us blind and were doing it with trade until steps were taken to rein that in. They rebuffed us thrice and won't let us help with the virus. They are causing untold harm by not telling us what they know about the virus to save the time of reverse engineering it. So be it.

They need to bring their population numbers down. The virus is doing that. Less mouths to feed means that if they can get some imported food, or manage to grow some, they might squeak through. If, and it is a BIG if, the virus doesn't jump to the bird or animal populations used for food. Once it is known that China released this plague on the world, who will give them any imports, especially food? China will never again be the world power it was in November 2019. Wuhan has fallen.

This virus is the Great Equalizer. Even at this late date, the Chinese people need to Stand Up. Throw off the chains and make China what it truly needs to be. Leave communism in the icy mud of another age. Like Snoopy Zen says- just let that $hit go. The people are the soul of China. They can farm and grow food right up to the time snow flies. These people are strong enough to come through this, and they will remember and never again let communism gain a foothold.
That is what I dream. I fear my reality will be much different in the coming days.

How bad will the industrial shutdown hurt them? How bad will it hurt us? The GSM is here. When machinery won't run because it is too cold or the storms blow the roof off- both of us are going to be in the same fix. Our countries can fight about it but it won't change the weather. We will both have the virus to contend with. Do we really want to contend with nuclear fallout, too?

They can try to bully food and supplies out of us, but I don't think Trump will stand for that. If Trump is who people believe he is, we will spool up factories within the next couple of months and take back our manufacturing. We should have never let it leave our shores.

The Four Coronavirus Scenarios: The Bad; The Worse; The Ugly; And The Unthinkable
Profile picture for user Tyler Durden

Submitted by Michael Every of Rabobank
Summary
  • The Covid-19 coronavirus could be more disruptive than markets are currently pricing in. Not in the least because the ‘true’ number of infected people remains uncertain, as the recent surge in cases exemplifies
  • We outline four scenarios in which the virus increasingly becomes severe: The Bad; The Worse; The Ugly; and The Unthinkable
  • We provide rough estimates for China’s growth trajectory in these scenarios although we stress that these are not our official forecasts since we are still working out the details
  • The three main channels through which Covid-19 will affect the global economy are tourism, net exports, and intermediate goods
  • In the ‘Bad’ scenario the virus outbreak does not last far beyond Q1. China’s GDP growth for 2020 could drop to below 5%, with production taking the biggest hit and a catch up in Q3 and Q4. This is our base case scenario, although with the recent surge in mind, the second scenario is becoming increasingly likely
  • In the ‘Worse’ scenario, the virus outbreak lasts beyond Q1. In that case China’s GDP growth could end up below 4% in 2020
  • In this scenario, next to China, Asia will bear the brunt of the prolonged outbreak due to its dependence on Chinas as an export market and intermediate imports as well as for tourism
  • In China itself, defaults of non-financial corporates in China could start to rise rapidly
  • This will lead to a decline in China’s long-term growth potential as private companies will suffer most, while less efficient SOEs will likely be bailed out. As a result, debt levels will balloon further, leaving China more vulnerable in the future
  • There will also be downwards pressure on the Chinese currency as extra CNY liquidity is made available
  • In the Ugly scenario, the virus spreads beyond China, and spreads to Asia as well as developed economies. Its effects will likely resemble the Global Financial Crisis of 2008/2009 more than the SARS outbreak in 2003
  • The Unthinkable scenario is a far left tail scenario, in which the virus mutates and becomes a truly global pandemic
Risk on?

Financial markets have been on a roller-coaster ride since the Novel coronavirus Covid-19 stole the headlines – albeit mainly on the ascent phase (bar today’s reaction) of the ride so far in terms of equities at least. At this stage, it’s still too early to tell whether or not Covid-19 is ‘under control’ or not. Especially given that the most surge in cases (due to a new counting methodology) shows that we don’t really know the actual number of infected cases (Figure 1).

An army fights on its stomach. The leaders and military at the top have for years been saying that they are training for the long game. To wipe us out and/or take us over. One point if I may to illustrate the problem with reusing/cleaning/trying to recondition masks.

Used masks and used condoms both have protected their users from potentially deadly disease.

You could clean and reuse them. But would you?

Earlier someone posted that if you haven't stocked up on coffee yet, you need to do so before this virus hits South America.

I'm not sure how long it's been so, but coffee is grown in other parts of the world now, too, and I remember hearing that one of those places is Myanmar. Don't know about Thailand, Malaysia or other countries in that part of the world, but it wouldn't hurt to check before stocking up if you thinks it's a serious consideration.

One of the Westerdam passengers that disembarked in Sihanoukville, Cambodia has tested positive for the coronavirus. Cambodia PM Hun Sen, age 67, personally greeted passengers there, shaking their hands. https://bloomberg.com/news/articles/

This is the incident I was referring to in an earlier post. Sure hope their PM doesn’t catch the virus. They will really be regretting letting the Westerdam stop there if he does.
