Greetings, Everyone: Due to the intermittent reports on Ebola which are surfacing on a delayed basis Dennis recommended this should be a monthly thread.

If you post a stand alone thread on Main please double post it here so there is an archive that we can all research to find specific articles. Thank you. BREWER

Ebola Rates Plummet, But WHO Says More to Come

Ebola cases have plummeted in the three West African countries hit by the worst epidemic ever of the virus, but health officials say it's not over yet.

More cases are likely to turn up in both Guinea and Sierra Leone, the World Health Organization says in its latest report on the epidemic. One patient disappeared in Guinea and is likely to have infected other people as she wandered across the border and visited a traditional healer, WHO said.

"In the week ending 2 August, two confirmed cases of Ebola virus disease were reported: one in Guinea and one in Sierra Leone. This is the second week in a row that weekly case incidence has been in single digits," WHO says in a report released Wednesday.
""This is the second week in a row that weekly case incidence has been in single digits.""

Liberia's had no new cases in 21 days. The epidemic has infected nearly 28,000 people and is known to have killed more than 11,000 of them, with many deaths almost certainly unrecorded.

The good news: most of the new cases are contacts of known cases, which means health officials are tracking down most people at high risk of becoming infected.

And more good news - an experimental vaccine worked to protect people in Guinea against the virus and it will now be given to children.

"While the vaccine has, up to now, shown 100 percent efficacy in individuals, more conclusive evidence is needed," WHO said.

"The trial will now include 13- to 17-year-old and possibly 6- to 12-year-old children on the basis of new evidence of the vaccine's safety."

The bad news is people are still slipping through the cracks.

"Almost 2,000 contacts remain under observation across five prefectures in Guinea and four districts in Sierra Leone, and despite intensive efforts a small number of contacts in both countries have not been traced or have been lost to follow-up. In addition, recent high-risk transmission events in Guinea and Sierra Leone are very likely to result in further cases in the coming weeks," WHO said.
""Over 40 contacts are considered to be at high risk of infection.""

WHO described the case of the missing patient.

"The case, a 28-year-old woman, is a registered contact associated with a known chain of transmission that has given rise to several generations of cases in ... the capital, Conakry, over the past several weeks," WHO said.

"After being lost to follow-up the case traveled south from Conakry through Forecariah and into Kambia, Sierra Leone, where she reportedly visited a traditional healer, before returning to Ratoma via Forecariah. Intensive efforts are underway to identify and trace all contacts in Guinea and Sierra Leone. "

Health workers are following up on more than 1,000 people.

And in another story that illustrates just how hard it will be to completely extinguish the virus, the latest case in Sierra Leone is one of more than 600 people who was contacted by a single patient.

"The new case is a family member who provided care to the index case. Over 40 contacts are considered to be at high risk of infection because of the nature of their contact with the index case, and there is a high probability that further cases will arise," WHO said.

Liberian Ebola survivor battles prejudice in UN virtual reality film

LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - A virtual reality film aims to draw attention to prejudice towards Ebola survivors by guiding viewers through the life of a woman in Liberia who uses her immunity to help others affected by the disease, the creators said on Tuesday.

The eight-minute film "Waves of Grace" is part of a series of virtual reality (VR) films commissioned by the United Nations to fight donor fatigue on humanitarian issues including the plight of Syrian refugees in the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan.

It transports the viewer to West Point, the most populous slum in Monrovia, and follows Ebola survivor Decontee Davis, offering a 360-degree view of her surroundings as she looks after orphaned children and cares for others with the disease.

"The Ebola crisis has captivated the world in its devastating effects over the last year and a half... however, the individual stories behind the numbers are often not told," U.N. adviser and filmmaker Gabo Arora said.

Davis is one of some 28,000 people infected by the world's worst known Ebola epidemic, which has plagued in West Africa for more than 18 months and killed more than 11,000 people.

During the course of the epidemic, the outbreak has ebbed only to flare up again. Liberia was declared Ebola-free in May but a fresh cluster of cases appeared nearly two months later, and its last case was discharged on July 23.

The film shows markets reopening, children going back to school and men returning to work in Liberia, which could once again be declared Ebola-free this week. But Davis warns of suspicion towards survivors, who are often ostracised by their communities.

Yet survivors are believed to have immunity from Ebola due to antibodies in their blood, allowing them to care for the sick without risking their lives and making them a powerful weapon in the fight against the virus, according to health experts.

"I work with those who have lost their mothers and fathers from the sickness. Please help us teach people the truth - that survivors like us are safe and cannot spread the disease," Davis says in the film at the bedside of a young boy in hospital.

The VR technology used to shoot the film, which is not yet widely available to the public but has been used by the gaming industry, gives viewers the impression that they can reach out and touch the people gathered around them.

WHO Ebola Situation Report 26 August

26 August 2015

The latest World Health Organization (WHO) Ebola Situation Report states there were three confirmed cases in Guinea for the week to 23 August. There were no new cases in Sierra Leone for the second week in a row.

With the decreasing number of chains of transmission, there are less contacts being followed up with 600 in Guinea and only 29 in Sierra Leone. All contacts in Tonkolili district, where the last confirmed patient was recently discharged after recovery, have now completed their 21-day follow-up. The WHO states that there does remain a significant risk of further transmission in Conakry, Guinea, due to; the high number of recent lost to follow-up contacts, one of this week’s cases being a healthcare worker at a private clinic and another only discovered after death in the community.

Globally there have been 28,041 confirmed, probable and suspected cases and a total of 11,302 deaths.

Sierra Leone: Corpse Tests Positive in Kambia

30 August 2015

The corpse of a 67-year-old woman in Tonko Limba chiefdom, Kambia, has tested positive for Ebola in a preliminary test. A confirmatory test will be conducted to rule out laboratory error since there had not been any case in the district for 50 days. Investigations into the woman's recent travel history are also continuing.

Sierra Leone had begun their 42-day countdown to becoming Ebola Free after the last case tested negative on 24 August.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that teams trained in the vaccine trial protocol have been sent to the affected area while all contacts are being traced. The Sierra Leone Ministry of Health requested that the Ebola vaccine ring trial be expanded to be offered to its citizens after promising results were found in Guinea.
