WAR Main Persian Gulf Trouble thread

So...anybody seen any difference in gas prices today? I really needed gas this morning as I was in "Big" city for 7:00am breakfast with the ladies from work..so I filled up at 2.69. Later this afternoon, went into "Rez-town" for feed, (which is usually 10-20 cents/gal cheaper), and the posted price was 2.79.
Just wondering if there's been a slow ramp-up.

Not here in CT...not yet anyway.

Average price lingering around 2.89 per gallon. One joker (no name brand) is pushing 3.15 per gallon but his pumps are a ghost town. The hot spots are up around 2.98 or 2.99, again...just my observation.

I spent $25 this afternoon to tank up my mini van. I'm not comfortable running on the fumes.

Premium in northern VA is 3.39 per gallon as of this afternoon (Tysons Corner, VA mall area). In NW DC, there was a station in Adams Morgan advertising premium for 3.89 a gallon today. Can't remember the regular unleaded prices but thinking they are 2.79 or so.

I just now filled up my van in Kalifornia.... $4.19 a gallon for regular. A hundred dollar bill and it never even clicked itself off before the 100 was in the tank.
It's been this high for almost a week.

On The Brink Of An Apocalyptic War With Iran, And Most Americans Don't Seem To Care

Most people don't know what's going on with the liberal media. With the nonstop impeach trump, going after Barr, Trumps taxes, etc. Can't have something else distracting going on.

Funny real funny we have been on the brink of war for many years, we have also been on the brink of doom for many years, some year it will happen.

Also the people care, it's the lieing media who don't care, so that means the people don't know about it.

DOOM fatigue.
The nihilist in me just wants to get it over with.

Imagine some left-over relic surviving on the surface of the Earth...maybe a battered face from Mt Rushmore, and beings a hundred million years from now peering over enhanced telescopic images, scratching their heads thinking....Is that for real?... What happened?

So she'll be in the Gulf of Suez/Red Sea by about 6-11 AM Eastern time Thursday morning. Launch in the Canal is no fun and RECOVERY would be even less. (Or at least this is what I would THINK... though the closest I have gotten is watching guys recover from carriers at Dam Neck/Oceania...used to live on WitchDuck Road, about 3 miles off the end of the Oceanea (IIRC) runway.)

I see two possible roles for the B-52's.

- Carrying scores of standoff conventional weapons along with standoff jammers and decoys.

- Nuclear counter strike mission in case Iran detonates their own device.

Al Uedid air base. 12,000 foot runway. If a coalition is building that's where they will congregate. RAF uses the base too.

They're also APPARENTLY going to be tasked with missile launch point counter-battery fire. The comment was they would be hunting launch sites. Which is why I commented that the 4 of them had come with friends, likely RC-135s of various stripes to help in the hunting.

CV-72 should be in useful waters by mid morning tomorrow, Eastern time.

Counter battery fire for a Buffasaurus is going to be either Mk-82's with the GPS kit attached. OR, Tomahawks. I'd hate to be on the receiving end of either one of these party favors.

Can't seem to find some info on the B-52s though. Can someone tell me if the H models are set up to even deliver iron bombs any more? I'm thinking H's modified with a Big Belly mod, like the D models were done that were used over North Vietnam. I can't see none of them modified in this manner, but can't find hard facts/figures on it.

B-52H Stratofortress weapons payload

The B-52H, with a weapons payload of more than 70,000lb, is capable of carrying the most diverse range of weapons of any combat aircraft.

The nuclear weapons capacity includes 12 AGM-129 advanced cruise missiles (ACMS), 20 AGM-86A air-launched cruise missiles (ALCM) and eight bombs.

The conventional weapons payload is eight AGM-84 Harpoon missiles, four AGM-142 Raptor missiles, 51 500lb bombs, 30 1,000lb bombs, 20 AGM-86C conventional air-launched cruise missiles (CALCM), 12 joint stand-off weapons (JSOW), 12 joint direct-attack munitions (JDAM) and 16 wind-corrected munitions dispenser (WCMD).

WCMD was first deployed by the B-52 in 2002 in Afghanistan. JSOW entered service in 2003 and was deployed during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The B-52 was the first aircraft to be equipped with the joint air-to-surface standoff missile (JASSM), which was cleared for operational use in October 2003.

In June 2006, Boeing was awarded a contract for the B-52 smart weapons integration next-generation (SWING), to support integration of future weapon systems such as JASSM extended-range, small diameter bomb and boost phase interceptor, until 2020.

In October 2006, Boeing announced that the B-52 can carry 32 small diameter bombs (SDB) on the common strategic rotary launcher in the bomb bay.

During Operation Iraqi Freedom in April 2003, a B-52 was fitted with the Northrop Grumman Litening II laser targeting pod, which was used to strike targets in Northern Iraq. In 2007, the USAF began fitting Litening to the B-52 fleet. The B-52 is fitted with the Lockheed Martin Sniper ATP advanced targeting pod. By December 2009, the Sniper demonstrated its capability to operate on B-52H aircraft.

In October 2010, Lockheed Martin-built JASSM successfully accomplished Lot 7 Reliability Assessment Programme flight tests at White Sands Missile Range, NM, by using B-52 and F-16 aircraft against a wide range of targets in various operational scenarios.

Boeing was awarded a eight-year, $11.9bn contract by the US Air Force in September 2010 to overhaul B-52H weapons systems.

The B-52H can also deliver 51 500lb, 30 1,000lb and 20 2,000lb navy mines.

That Buffasaurus driver is GOOD. Notice the number board on the runway? He must have planted it on the numbers, because it's only taken 1000 feet to get the BUFF planted (not just the mains but the outriggers too. The wing has droop already!), AND slowed down enough to pop the drag chute. In a hot high environment, no less. Impressive! In that area of the world it's not uncommon to deal with float and ground effect issues upon landing, not to mention taking forever and a day to get the plane OFF the runway.

I know there's a C-130 toting LOTS of distilled water for those planes. H mods have TF-33 turbofan engines with water injection-water injection into the exhaust makes the exhaust denser-the effect is much like a fighter plane with afterburners engaged.

SO much for light-hearted drooling!!

BUZZ KILLER!!

Not sure of Iran's throw weight but conventional missiles will make virtually as strong a point as special munitions.

Buddy of mine spent his whole tour with the AF in SEAsia tinkering and cajoling a HUGE assed distiller. His level of "Mission critical" ness was sufficient to let him steal a distiller from a MAJOR hospital and have it on HIS tarmack in less than 24 hours (which includes the transport time to XXXXXX airfield, SEAsia.

Add more gallons if RAF is using anything with RR spey engines there.

If they start launching aircraft while in the canal, they won't be landing back on the carrier until it's in the Red Sea at a minimum. Probably come back to either Saudi, Jordan, Egypt or if things have really gone hot, Israel since the imagery won't mean squat at that point...

I've also got to wonder how many "combat coded" B-2s and tankers are being "reserved" for use in that AO?....

Tankers is a primary concern for me.

Barksdale might be an interesting place to overlook about 1st light tomorrow. See if they left ANYONE to answer the phone, as it were.

Bones and Goblins are an interesting package or can be several packages... But by the time THEY get to the Gulf they may be superfluous, depending.

(I'm reminded of the message we sent Vlad and his mercs in Syria....)

What would be the relevance, either way?

Ah. Several years ago Doz and I had an on-thread discussion as to how large a briefcase a particular envoy was carrying at the time. Thicker usually meant much reading and negotiation etc, while thinner suggested fairly short missives.
Usually, the most important trips had the thinnest briefcases and the most momentous ones had at most a single piece of paper.

In world situations like this, it helps to gauge where specific parties are to know briefcase dimensions.

Overnight a second group of two B-52H left Barksdale AFB headed for the CENTCOM area of responsibility.

Two KC-10 tankers accompanied the bombers.

Interesting that a NOTAM was publicly issued before the flight essentially, reserving/clearing mid-ocean airspace for this deployment.

Much speculation as to the actual "loadout" of these two aircraft. . .

U.S. officials: Iran official OK'd attacks on American militaryWASHINGTON — The U.S. decision to surge additional military forces into the Middle East was based in part on intelligence that the Iranian regime has told some of its proxy forces and surrogates that they can now go after American military personnel and assets in the region, according to three U.S. officials familiar with the intelligence.

The intelligence shows that an Iranian official discussed activating Iranian-backed groups to target Americans, but did not mention targeting the militaries of other nations, the officials said.

Among the specific threats the U.S. military is now tracking, officials say, are possible missile attacks by Iranian dhows, or small ships, in the Persian Gulf; attacks in Iraq by Iranian-trained Shiite militia groups; and attacks against U.S. ships by the Houthi rebels in Yemen.

The U.S. has accused Iran of moving missiles and missile components through the region's waterways for years, shipping missiles to the Houthis in Yemen and others. And Shiite militia groups like Baghdad Katib Hezbollah (BKH) have been in Iraq for years, acting essentially as sleeper cells. What is new and what has alarmed U.S. military officials, sources say, is the call to awaken and activate these existing threats.

One U.S. official said Iran usually conceals the missiles and components when delivering them to the Houthis. These missiles are visible to overhead surveillance, leading to concerns Iran could attempt to launch missiles from the dhows. There are some indications they have mobile launchers on board, as well, one of the officials said. The three officials say that in addition to learning that an Iranian official had discussed attacks on Americans, the U.S. began seeing the movement of Iranian and Iranian-backed forces in various places across the region, prompting the commander of U.S. Central Command, Marine Corps Gen. Frank McKenzie, to request additional forces move to the region. On Sunday, Acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan approved the request to accelerate the deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group and a bomber task force to the region. National Security Adviser John Bolton announced the movement in a statement Sunday night.

A spokesperson for U.S. Central Command declined to provide detailed information on the threats.

"U.S. Central Command has seen recent and clear indications that Iranian and Iranian proxy forces were making preparations to possibly attack U.S. forces in the region," said the spokesperson, Capt. Bill Urban. "This include threats on land and in the maritime. We are not going to be able to provide detailed information on specific threats at this time.""Make no mistake, we are not seeking a fight with the Iranian regime," Gen. McKenzie said Wednesday during a speech at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a think tank that favors a tough U.S. posture toward Iran. "Any attack on U.S. interests will be met with unrelenting force."

Despite the increase in U.S. military heft to the region, Iran has not slowed its movement of forces or changed its posture, according to the three U.S. officials.

Congressional Democrats say they are concerned the Trump administration is trying to provoke a wider conflict.

"The intelligence is real," said a senior Democratic congressional official briefed on the intelligence, "but the response seems wildly out of proportion."

Iranian officials have called the accelerated deployment of the carrier group "psychological warfare." On Twitter, Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said, "If US and clients don't feel safe, it's because they're despised by people in the region — blaming Iran won't reverse that."https://www.nbcnews.com/news/military/u-s-officials-iran-official-ok-d-attacks-american-military-n1003421
