Migraine relief

Feverfew:

Fresh, put a few sprigs between a folded slice of bread... eat it as if it were lettuce. It's a bit on the bitter side, but chew fast and chase with fluids, the bitterness will pass.

You can buy it in capsule form, but I think fresh home grown is best. My daughter and I eat it (or take it in pill form when forced to) as a preventative but migraines run on a relatively regular schedule around here so it's easy to have some for several days in a row before 'that time of the month'. She swears that if she takes it once the migraine has begun that it eases it... I find I must take it before hand (as a prophylactic) in order for it to help me, and when I do, I don't have the migraine at all. Could be body chemistry or the placebo effect, I don't know, that causes the differences in our reactions once the headache has begun.

A friend takes it in pill form every day and says he's not had a migraine in almost two years, whereas he generally had two or more a month.

Good luck.... migraines are terrible.

Prevention is largely a matter of figuring out what your specific triggers are, and then doing your best to avoid them. For me, the big two or two little/much sleep (which I have some control over) and menstrual cycle (when I do tend to feel exhausted, so there may be a connection). Researching migraines on the internet might help you figure out what your sensitivities are. If you're lucky, it will be easily avoided foods.

I was able to knock my migraines back substantially with homeopathy (don't, please don't guess which remedy to take - it is a chronic condition so you must see a qualified homeopath or you can make yourself worse). However, hormonal issues (fibroids?) appear to be catching up to me again. So, I keep Imitrex handy.

Thanks for the info, O2BNOK, I get those regularly scheduled migraines as well. I've tried certain essential oils recommended for migraines but they don't do much. So, is feverfew fairly easy to grow?

bluefire...

essential oils didn't work for us either.

Feverfew is extremely easy to grow... find a spot, turn the soil, drop the seeds on the ground and walk away. It doesn't seem to matter much if the plants have full sun or are shaded through part of the day. The seedlings are tiny, but will need room to spread out... pick the leaves fresh from spring until fall killing frost. I pick leaves during the mornings and dry them, though my daughter still prefers the gel-cap form bought from one of the drugstores.... go figure. (Feverfew has a beautiful small white daisy-like flower with a yellow center... lovely in the garden.)

I seldom have a migraines but on the second day of my period... so on the first day I take some feverfew, same on the second day.... then no more until next period, and no migraine. I may have one or two migraines a year that are unrelated to my period. DD has them at various times so she waits until the headache starts to take anything.

Hope it helps you.... it sure does for us.

Thanks for the help.

I talked to the health food guy about his experiences talking to his customers. He was saying that feverfew taken as a preventative seemed to work best for the people he's talked to. Then, if they feel a migraine coming on, they take more.

I also asked about magnesium, since it also showed up on my internet quest. It's supposed to help relax the muscles causing the migraine. might help.

His experience says that there's not much to do to help with the pain herbally once one has gotten started.

Anyone have any feverfew seeds to share?

I've always had "bad" headaches, lately resulting in seeing spots, so was wondering if these were "migraines." My mil also had bad headaches. Dd had her wisdom teeth cut out from her jaw, couldn't wait for them to start erupting, and still has some pain. Then she developed a bad headache and asked if there were lightening bugs in the living room. Guess that's a clue.

So, guess I need to research more.

I thought migraines were about blood vessels dilating, not muscles, but I haven't read anything lately.

I don't have any feverfew seed. However, it is a fairly common herb to buy by seed from a seed company. These folks should: http://www.superseeds.com/home.htm

In the spring of the year you could probably easily get either seeds or plants from a large garden nursery. There are also nice cultivars, but might not function the way the wild species does.

I confirmed my migraines were migraines by taking some of my brother's migraine medicine (Imitrex). Over the counter meds had never touched them (which should have been one of my clues).

Feverfew thins the blood, so be very careful if you take aspirin on a daily basis, and DO NOT take it if you are on coumadin/warfarin/heparin.

Far as magnesium, yes it does help! For fast acting/fast absorption, try Peter Gillham's Natural Vitality. It is a powder form you mix with water, and is amazing! It has been proven that people suffering from migraines have low levels of magnesium.

Good Luck

Sometimes I get the ones that if a pin drops, it's like a gong going off inside my head and bright sunshine jacks the pain up to the amazing wow level.

I've never tried feverfew, but it seems to be the most popular natural way to go. The docs have some new meds for it, or so I hear.

What works for me is cola, plain regular cola. Not diet. The carbonation and cola syrup help settle the belly. There's caffeine and corn syrup in there. Don't know and don't really care why it works. But without cola I'll be in bed for up to three days. With cola I'm up and around in a few hours.

Coke seems better than Pepsi. I usually buy a generic, Sweet Valley.

Ran out of cola and tried coffee once and tea once, and I'll never do that again.

I've had severe migraines since I was 12. One thing that sometimes will kick it is to let myself get really hungry, till my blood sugar feels close to bottom. Then eat a hearty meal. Don't know exactly why it works tho when all else has failed. And doesn't always work. But worth a try.
