There is only 2 buckets, the top one (red) has the soil and a wick into the bottom one. I water them through the short pieces of pvc and when the bottom reaches a predetermined depth a small hole in the side begins to leak to tell me to stop. I can go up to a week without carrying water when before I had to water about every day or two. The hole also keeps it from over filling when it rains.

Thanks for sharing Bob! Hillside gardening would be fun and a challenge I would think. You spend alot of time there I can tell. Looks wonderful!

Good Sunday mornin' folks, Thank you all for the comments on my garden. It looks kinda bad now, we had too much rain for a while then no rain for a while but such is the life of a gardener.

Vicki, I just got through looking at your pictures and I am amazed at the different things you are growing and looking so good.

Thanks Dennis for this room.

What do you use for a wick? Do you place it through the bottom up through a hole into the soil? How far up into the soil? Thanks ahead for the information.

Marsh and anyone else that is interested, I don't know how to post a single picture then write some then add another picture then write some more So I will explain the 4 pictures then post them all together.

1. Shows the bottom with a hole for the pvc fill tube, a bunch of small hole for drainage and a big hole for the wick.

2. Shows the 3 pack of wet foam from walmart that I use for the wick.

3. Shows the wet foam in place in the bucket.

4. Shows the stand I nailed together to hold then all.

Now for the fine print: There needs to be a small drain hole in the lower bucket so that there is a space between top bucket and the water otherwise the roots of your plant will grow into the water and clog everything. Also the drain hole will tell you when you have added enough water and lastly when it rains it will duh drain.

The wet foam extended about 2/3 into water and 1/3 into the soil.

Last year was my first time to do this and I found that the tomatoes fill the wet foam with hair like roots. I let them dry up and when I used them this spring they seemed to work okay but to be sure I had a scrap piece of weed block on hand so I cut a piece to go into each bucket before adding the soil.

I hope this helps.
