RALEIGH — A controversial decision by state agriculture officials is drawing the ire of backyard chicken owners and supporters.

The N.C. Department of Agricutlure and Consumer Services issued a statement Wednesday saying it is now requiring all poultry owners, regardless of the number of birds, to register for an NCFarmID number.

The identification program is usually voluntary, but has been made mandatory for all backyard poultry farmers.

“In planning our response for highly pathogenic avian influenza, one problem we’ve come across is that we can’t protect birds that we don’t know exist,” said State Veterinarian Doug Meckes. “We need to know where poultry are located so we can properly protect commercial and backyard flocks.”

Officials say the information used “solely for animal health purposes” and “will provide animal health officials with necessary contact information in case of an animal health concern.”

However, some state residents see the measure as nothing more than government overreach.

“They claim that it is to protect N.C. poultry from the bird flu, but it feels like they are using this as an excuse to target and track owners of backyard chickens,” said Nicole Revels, a conservative activist from Caldwell County. “There has not been a single case of the avian flu in North Carolina.”

When she heard about the registration Thursday, Revels created a Facebook page called “NO to NC Chicken Registration,” which garnered more than 350 “likes” within 36 hours.

There is also a link to a petition demanding state Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler “rescind this decree and work to protect our right to do as we choose on our own property without having to ask for government permission.”

“Also there is something to be said about the fact that this measure is implemented by way of declaration of Steve Troxler rather than by a legislative process in which the people have input and representation,” Revels added. “I voted for Steve Troxler in 2012, but I never thought he would use the position to bring about this kind of action.”

According to Revels, it is already difficult enough for many people to have backyard chickens, due to local restrictions.

Several municipalities in Richmond County have such restrictions.

No fowl are permitted in the city of Hamlet, according to Zoning Coordinator Gail Strickland. Ellerbe Mayor Lee Berry said residents in that town are allowed to have up to 12 hens, but no roosters.

Revels, a homeschooling mother, said she was planning to get backyard chickens as a part of this year’s curriculum for her 7-year-old son, but now feels targeted with the implementation of a further data collection measure.

“The state stepping in with an additional compliance measure just makes it more difficult for individuals to live an independent life free from the interference of elected officials and bureaucrats,” she said.

Good luck with that. Talk about a way to make a whole bunch of folks lawbreakers with one swipe of the pen.

Wonder what kind of teeth (penalties) this law carries? If my birds get sick, I'll let the authorities know about it. That should be enough.

So far to date the bird flue has only affected large scale commercial operations. Government inspectors may have something to do with this going to one large scale maga farm to the next.

There have been some small flocks infected, but you don't hear much about it because they are easy clean-up jobs. Yes, the majority have been big operations.

They do a no knock raid at three in the morning and hold you and your family at gun point, while the rest of the team shoots every animal you have. Bet they will pull it once and no they will not collect the dead livestock, but leave it there for you to deal with.

I guess you may have to send the chickens' registration numbers in to the state. How will they keep chickens from forging IDs? Will the cards have a photo? I think that all Leghorns look pretty much alike, though I did have a few that I could pick out of a lineup.

Voter Chicken Fraud!! Since no cases of Bird Flu have been reported in NC you have to look at other motives. I still think most of the contamination comes from the Government Inspectors going from operation to operation.

And from have hundreds/thousands of birds all kept in closed buildings with no outside time in the fresh air and sunshine.

With the happy side effect of 5 dozen eggs costing me $18.29 this morning. :(

Heh, I paid $5.19 a lb yesterday for ground turkey. It comes in a lb and a quarter package so it was $6.49. Ten years ago or even less it was around $4 for that same package of ground turkey. (Shady Brook Farms) Last week it was "on sale" for $5.99 a package. I asked the assistant butcher how that was on sale cause that's what it's been for over a year now. What was it going to cost this week "off sale". Sigh........I found out yesterday........ I can still buy Carolina Farms ground turkey but it's mostly dark meat and they over grind the meat, making is really mushy. I got some of that yesterday also and made a meat loaf with it tonight to disguise the consistancy.......lol. It doesn't taste as good either as the other does. Next time they have the Perdue on sale I will have to stock up. That has been pretty reasonable at about $4 a lb but they don't carry it on a daily/weekly basis.

Dh can't eat red meat so we use turkey all the time. He doesn't like the taste of the ground chicken and even that's going up in price. All the poultry is going up. Pork and beef also.

They have Shady Brook Farm Italian sausage this week on sale. Gonna load up on it. Good stuff and I can't tell the difference from beef sausage anymore except it's a whole lot leaner.

Checked egg price at a small private grocery store last Wednesday. Five dozen was listed at $9.98. Two FRN's a dozen. I am good so I didn't buy any but maybe the Bird Flu is passing and egg production is up or less eggs are being sold?
