Need Help For Female Cat W/Urinary Tract Problems

Could anyone help me with this problem. I have...well lets say a very large female cat who we call "Tubby"...she fits the name. We got her that way as an adult.

I noticed that she was going to the litter box a lot so I took her to the vet and he gave her some antibiotics...they worked for a little while.

Now she is going to the litter box to often. She doesn't cry in pain and she is always cleaning herself ....I mean always!

Now the problem is...I would take her back to the vet but we are very low on $ at this time and can't afford to. Is there some kind of med's. I can get to help her. We live in a rural area with Farm & Fleet store near by that has medicated milk replacer (antibiotics in it). Does anyone know if that would help....it costs a lot less then going to the vet. Our vet charges $25 just for the office visit plus any tests on top of that plus the med's. :shkr:

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Teadrinker, search the alternate pet meds thread, there was a discussion a few months ago about this, and someone gave his cat some cranberry juice extract and it helped clear things up. I now keep some in my fridge for my own cats.

Can you try to call your vet and ask if they can simply phone in a prescription for more antibiotics or just give you some there and you could just go and pick them up without incurring an office visit charge? Seems like the vet should do this easily. Good luck. :kat:

I am so sorry to hear you are having trouble. I used cranberry juice extract about 9 months ago when my old girl Frieda was having that trouble. It did help. I got a big bottle of it at GNC for about 8 bucks....i used one dropperful (a dropper I had) roughly a 1/2 teaspoon, mixed in her canned cat food once to twice a day. We did find some relief with that. She never did quite make it off the Baytril for good, but we were only going back about once every three months or so. Unfortunately, her kidneys gave out and at 15, she died in August.
Good luck!

Teadrinker, I am sorry about your kittie. I have 2 that have reoccurring stones. had them x-rayed. the verdict was a special diet and then the diet sucks out the calcium that causes the stones. the symptoms are going to litter box and straining or only leaving a drop after squatting several minutes. sometimes you can see bloody urine.

if it is not stones... it could be renal .. here is a forum that has excellant information if you ask!

I give mine a spotof CS and am very careful what they eat.

Fly girl, so sorry for your loss. we also lost a kittie on the first of August. still painful to think about.

good luck.

Thanks everyone. I'm so sorry to hear about your cat Fly Girl. When we lose one of our fur kids it really, really hurts. It is losing one of the family members.

I will check out that link that SARO1 posted, I don't live near a big city so I will have to check online about that cranberry extract. It will be a real experience to get that extract down her because she hates canned food....the only thing she eat is dry. I'm sure it will be a fun time for all. :D

Thank you again,

There are special dry cat foods formulated for feline UTI. It has to be purchased from the vet's office, it's not cheap, and the cat stays on it for life, but it keeps him/her free from the pain of UTI.

Friends have a big altered tom cat who had recurrent urinary tract infections. Cost her $75 every 6 months or so for the vet and antibiotics.

She started adding colloidal silver to his water (was using it herself for a severe infection of her lymph nodes, supposedly incurable- which it cured. But that's another story). He only has had one infection since, and that was when she ran out of colloidal silver. Since I taught her how to make it (and got her son-in-law to make her a generator for Christmas), she doesn't run out anymore. And the cat doesn't have any more problems!

She says the cat drinks the doctored water without the slightest problem. I didn't get that lucky, and had to add the CS VERY slowly to our cat's water. But, we have a big neutered tom who has FLV, and who kept getting nasty upper respiratory infections. I figured sooner or later we'd lose him to one... that's what happens with the FLV cats on the farm here. But since I started adding CS to his water (he gets 1 ounce in 1 gallon), he hasn't had an infection since. Probably close to 20 months now...

Bodybagger is right

Lots of times it's the cat food that's the culprit. Some cat foods contain an excess of minerals, particularly magnesium, and that causes urinary problems. Nine Lives is the worst!

Get the prescription cat food. It will save you money in the end on vet visits and kittty a lot of pain. Hill Science Diet Feline K/D is good for this and so is Purine NF. Both available from the vet.

You could try the cranberry extract along with echinacea/goldenseal and see if that helps.

I still believe that good old wheat grass works also. The chlorophyl reduces the uric acid. I make sure my cats get grass every day.
