LEGAL Oregon bill proposes to MAKE CIGARETTES "PRESCRIPTION ONLY" (ie illegal to possess/buy)

Saved, to glorify God.
This bill instantly would make criminals out of up to 40% of law abiding Americans!
NO PHYSICIAN WOULD WRITE A PRESCRIPTION FOR CIGARETTES, WHY USE THAT FIG LEAF?

http://www.kptv.com/story/20662618/...would-make-cigarettes-prescription-only-drugs

If you're a regular smoker, you may want to keep an eye on a new bill in the Oregon Legislature.

Rep. Mitch Greenlick, from Portland, is sponsoring a bill that makes cigarettes a Schedule III controlled substance, meaning it would be illegal to possess or distribute cigarettes without a doctor's prescription.

Under the proposal, offenders would face maximum punishments of one year in prison, a $6,250 fine or both.

Other drugs and substances that are considered Schedule III controlled substances are ketamine, lysergic acid and anabolic steroids.

"The State Board of Pharmacy may adopt rules placing requirements and limitations on the sale or transfer of products containing nicotine," the bill's text says.

"I think it's pretty crazy," said Juan Silva of Salem. "I don't see it going through. It's going to be something to watch for, but I don't think it'll pass."

Others see the proposal differently.

"I hope it passes and I hope people actually think about it," said Rick Cannon of Salem. "You know there's less and less smokers everyday because they know how bad it is for them, so I just hope people wake up and realize how bad it actually is for them."

Greenlick also made headlines this week by suggesting a state committee look into the hiring procedure used by the University of Oregon when it named Mark Helfrich the new Ducks head coach.

I think the cigarette nazi's trying to pass this bill KNOW it will be overturned in the higher courts eventually as unconstitutional, BUT ARE HOPING THEY CAN FORCIBLY MAKE SMOKERS, DEPRIVED BY THIS LAW OF THEIR CIGARETTES FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS WHILE THIS IS BATTLED OUT IN COURT QUIT SMOKING PERMANENTLY.

Unless SOMEONE CAN GET AN INJUNCTION on it's being implemented in the interim.
They are stepping in and depriving me of my 50 YEAR enjoyed right to the "PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS" which has been my LEGAL choice all my life, and also utterly IGNORING the part of the constitution that says that this is a right that belongs to the people as one that is NOT given to the government.

I give up.
Oh I hear you, Ainit. Thank God for the Rez's. But even if the STATE forced the Rez's to close, I know there would immediately spring up a black market for butts. They have them here, if you can't get to the Rez. You just go downtown and if you know a guy, he will sell you cigs for half price. That's the way it always has been anyway. Someone will want to keep smokers supplied.

The Feds will grab ahold of this bill from Oregon and turn it into an Obamacare issue. They will preach that cigarette smokers raise the prices of healthcare for everyone.

Well so do alcohol users, and sports players, and swimmers, boaters, rock climbers, hikers, campers, drivers, chefs, oil rig workers, carpenters and every other profession that could potentially cause an accident.

Crap like this is why I will never move back to Oregon. Too many Kalifornicators have moved there, and brought their tree-hugging liberal attitudes. And these a-holes have become embedded in the halls of power. This bill will probably go nowhere, but just the fact that it was introduced confirms what I just said.

That would just cause me a great deal of anxiety and I would have to ask a doctor for a medical marijuana perscription to help me calm down.

If passed, this would do some serious damage to the state budget. 73% of the state cigarette taxes go to fund the Oregon Health plan. If cigarette smokers go away, where will they get that money from?

I wonder if this would make the tobacco plants that I grow every year illegal? Even though I don't smoke, I like to raise a bunch because they are pretty, they make a natural dewormer for livestock, and it shocks people to see tobacco growing.

You left out the group that incurs the largest healthcare expenses: homosexuals. Do you have any idea what the drugs for AIDS treatment cost? I do because I worked in a healthcare related industry in a previous life. Cancer patients got nothing on these folks, I tell you. So, by following this line of thought, do we re-criminalize such behavior? After all, it is a choice.

Flame away if you wish. It won't change the facts though.

This makes me think of what someone posted on the "Why are you a liberal" thread. I'd never thought of it that way, but it was so spot-on that I have quoted it several times since reading it. It said (and I'm paraphrasing) that a liberal is someone who believes that if you get AIDS from having unprotected homo sex, the government should pay all your healthcare expenses, but if you get lung cancer from smoking, you should DIE!

They're so predictable, aren't they?!!?

Is this all my State government has to do? OMG I have some productive work that I can give them to do if they will contact me. How absolutely silly. Where does this goffy moron think this will go? The tabacco lobby will chie in. The city of Portland itself will chime in. How much money do they make from taxes on cigs? The superior courts will chime in.

Maybe he will ban McDonalds next. I've seen some 400 pounders walking out of there and that stuff cannot be good for them. I know. Let's put a scale in McDonalds. If you weight over 200, you can't buy for health reasons.

They think messing with the God given right to guns, they have never seen a smoker deprived of his drug of choice.

I have heard that instead of smuggling pot a lot of cigs / tobbacco is being smuggled into NY and Canada as it is more profitable and still undercuts those prices.

Making something illegal, guns, drugs, tobacco etc just assures that a black market will be created, prices will soar, and since one has been forced to be an outlaw mights as well have the tobacco equivalent to a mg42 or krinkov complete with suppressor or similar.

After the first one the rest are free ya know.

I don't think this will pass, but the intent behind the law is probably pretty much the same as prohibition. Back then some "good Christian people" (churches, especially evangelic churches were big on the "Pledge") really thought that if you could just stop selling alcohol than men (especially poor men) would stop drinking up the family pay check and start caring for their families again.

Of course we all know that "experiment" was a total failure, that all this does is create heroes out of Moonshine makers and create a black market that Gangsters love. Home brewing was huge during the time period, as was the rise of the "speak easy" or illegal tavern - which mean lots of consumption, violence and no taxes.

The same thing is now pretty much true of pot and would be an even bigger issue in the case of cigarettes. Mexico, for one, would not stop making and providing them; they would simply become the new black market currency of choice and probably make them more exciting to younger people rather than less.

To smoke would be rebellion, like Pot was (and to a degree still is)...

A very stupid idea, whose time has not come (and I don't smoke either and am grateful for laws that restrict smoking out of public indoor spaces but think making it totally illegal is insane).

I switched to little cigars and bought a bunch of tobacco seed varieties to grow my own if need be. I'm afraid there won't be much uproar about this proposal because no one ever stands up for us nasty smokers. What's that saying, "First they came for....".

Considering the continuing drumbeat of a 'progressive' (liberal - left - socialist and worse) agenda in the formerly Great State of Oregon -

it might be way past time to consider going Galt and finding better places to live.

Seems as tho' much of the Left Coast has gone bonkers.

And smoking is a form of prayer and/or part of praying to a Native American. My grandpa was a Yuwipi man and he was always telling my grandma not to bother him while he was 'praying'.

They better not get involved with someone's religion! V

Not if it's a SCHED III. That is an illegal drug substance like LSD. No medical use. Can't be prescribed.

No, that's SCHED 1.

SCHED III is where drugs like codiene are placed. Can be prescribed with a regular (not triplicate) prescription by any doctor.

It's still a truly stupid idea. A science fiction novel I once read postulated that cigarettes and tobacco products would be completely illegal, but pot would be legalized. Looks like they weren't far wrong.

lol. doesn't break my heart, that's for sure. I hate cigarettes/tobacco. Everything about it. If this KILLER drug is legally available, then all other less harmful drugs should be legal too. Put that in your pipe and smoke it. Equal rights/justice for smokers, my a$$. More like the "just-us" club for the tobacco folks.

And BTW. I must assume that you folks don't mind subsidizing smokers to the tune of tens of millions/year due to the health care costs for the multiple diseases caused by tobacco use. I don't know the exact cost but be assured that it is HUGE.

BTW. Ever live with/see someone die from lung cancer. Ever live with /see someone with emphyzema caused by this disgusting, filthy addiction. Horrifying,

Excuse me for injecting some perspective.

It's your money/wealth going up in smoke. lol.

Enjoy.

Legal for tobacco, then legal for marijuana.

IF the government CAN get away with THIS degree of CONTROL OVER YOUR PERSONAL LIFE CHOICES, THEN

WATCH OUT,

NEXT......look for them to TARGET WATER RATES AND HIGH, HIGH TAXES ON WATER, and try to control how often you bathe, kids turning in family and neighbors who "even showered twice in one day" when "every other day" becomes the "environmentally responsible" choice or who "watered plants, or a garden, contrary to the new water conservation laws, EVEN WHEN THERE IS NO SHORTAGE OF WATER, GREED WILL ,MAKE THE HIGH WATER RATES AND HIGH TAXES WILL STAY YEAR ROUND.

NEXT WILL BE FOOD:
THEN they will exploit the issue of "public health care costs" to generate HIGH TAXES ON "JUNK/and ALL PREPARED, "unhealthy" convenience/deli/ FOOD AND BEVERAGES"! Nothing but raw, unprocessed, produce, dairy meat etc will be exempt from high taxes. AND, home FOOD POSSESSION LIMITS will be slipped in to "discourage hoarding" and the "danger" posed by possible possession of "expired food". RECORDS ARE ALREADY KEPT ON YOUR FOOD PURCHASES, THOSE "under the radar purchasers" "without discount store cards" and/or paying in cash will soon be required to provide positive ID for food purchases, not only enabling the authorities to control access to food, but to "
LOCATE WANTED PEOPLE QUICKLY."

There is no limit to the degree of control the authorities can and will seek over your right and freedoms if they are NOT STOPPED! Historically, the color, fabric and style of your clothes was a matter of law in some times and places. How long your hair is is still regulated in some places, whether you men are required or forbidden to shave can be a matter for others to decide if you DON'T GUARD YOUR RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS! Even WHO IS COMPELLED TO WALK AND WHO MAY RIDE can be made a matter of law.

Yea, look at the whole picture. As long as THAT picture suits your or the "PC" approach to tobacco use.

There are currently thousands of individuals languishing in prisons in AmeriKa and around the world, for marijuana "offences". A drug that kills NO ONE and causes no disease. These people are placed in confined quarters with rapists and murderers. For years.

Equal justice? Prison for pot, then prison for tobacco.

But that's ok. As long as YOU can have YOUR addictive killer.

Tobacco as NO moral high ground. None.

I am going to start a thread on Cannabis and it's POSITIVE medicinal uses, etc.. Soon. I have been saving numerous articles for the last couple of months.

Outcry for tobacco, then shout it from the rooftops for Cannabis. The killer is legal, and the healer is banned.

Evil is called good and good is called evil.

And the irony my approach is............

I don't smoke it or use it. Have not used it since 1993.

Although I have been using hemp protein the past 6 months or so. Excellent protein source. Excellent. Arguably better than any other source. Wiki for info if interested.

Tobacco gets no sympathy from me as long as Marijuana users languish in prison.

AGREED. THIS KIND, like BUCKSTER, DOESN'T WAKE UP till he discovers HIMSELF and HIS CHOICES in the "crosshairs" of those who want to MAKE ALL OUR CHOICES, TELL US HOW TO LIVE and RULE EVERY ASPECT OF HOW WE ARE TO LIVE, THINK, SPEAK, SPEND OR SAVE OUR MONEY, TRAVEL, EAT, EXERCISE, ACT, WORK, KNOW, BELIEVE, WORSHIP, "CONSUME", MARRY, PARENT, "SERVE OTHERS" and WHEN, WHERE AND HOW WE DIE.

Wow--I am all for this!!

How did smoking tobacco just become the de-regur thing to do anyways?
How come such a stupid, money wasting, times wasting activity is soooooo complained about when they/them try to stop this behavior?

Alright, I guess you have the right to smoke. You have the right to be aggressively ignorant.
But I also think that smokers should pay a premium on their heath insurance costs.... say 45% or so more than a non-smoker.
Also--employers should be able to fire stinky, time wasting people who live their lives in a cloud of tobacco smoke.
