[ot] dog training

Would any of you out there have any ideas about how I could have my dog trained?
I have a very sharp intelligent dog that I came by indavertantly.
This dog is young- about a year old, and I feel he would be a great sniffer dog- drugs or explosives, ( airports) or a search and rescue dog...
short of being in law enforcement, does anyone have any suggestions as to how I could get this dog trained to help mankind?
or am I just way too proud of my dog? :)

If he has a good nose you could train him to be an avalanche dog. You would need to learn how to ski though, backcountry and downhill. :)

thanks :)

this dog is agile too,
the first time I took him to the vet, he got out of a window that was open about 6 or 8 inches and came trotting back into the vet's, out of a suburban!!! ( I had forgotten to pay the bill and left him in the truck with the window open so he could breathe)
was a bit surprised to see him open the door and come in!!!
Should I call the police department to see if they could use an animal like this? My only problem with this is that I do not wish to part with him, and am probably too old to join the police force :)

Are there any entities out there that could help me train him and use him...with me included of course! lol

What would you guess this dog's breed to be?

What is it's height, and weight?

Can you afford to pay a professional trainer to work with you and the dog? (Probably about $300-$500)

Is the dog trained at all? As in sit, stay, down...leash trained... etc.

Used to know someone who did search and rescue with her doberman.

They BOTH had to go to training together.

The dog needs to bond with the person he will be working with, so you need to decide if you want to make the commitment. Assuming the two of you are trainable, it could be very satisfying.

i can be trained =)

i am silly!!! reminisced about painful dog cat and mom things...lol

this is silly...
let me give you some background on him, he is like a penny from heaven for me,
have always wanted a small white shepherd...i had a beautiful golden retriever when I was a teenager, had wanted a golden lab got married, moved into a trailer and had to chain that animal, always wished for a bigger yard, feel so very very guilty and heartbroken about that dog (
texas has a bad problem with ticks and fleas they can kill your dogs, i had been diligent in keeping that chained dog free of ticks

I went to the black hills of south dakota for a month to see my mother, last time i saw her...

when i came back i found that my husband had not taken care of Ben, and Ben waited until I came home to die
he waited until I was there to die
the night i came home
somehow I cannot forgive my husband for that

I could not and would not ever have another dog after that
it broke my heart

after my mother died i got a bigger house with a half acre fenced...
that was 90

i had a cat and then a buff cat that no other cat could touch ...buff cool cat have had many cats and he was one of a kind...
he would clean his ears on my toes...lol
show his belly for me,
would never go to anyone else

i am drifting

Then, whetherwhich, you should definitely train together. It could be very special. So sorry about Ben.

Try your local rescue squads, fire, police. They should have some ideas how you could hook up with a search and rescue. Or a local dog obedience group might know.

the vet said he is part shepherd and lab...55lbs
my sister found him eating out of the garbage can at mcdonald's. she put an ad in the paper for 2 weeks and didn't want to take him to the pound,
i asked to see him, wishing for a dog but not having to go thru puppyhood...
and there he was, and is...a beautiful canine that has bonded with me as did the buff cat maki

so, please tell me how to best utilize this beautiful animal that is sharp as a tack...he is gorgeous and a one woman dog

but bored :)

Why don't you consult your yellow pages and see what's listed under dog training? If you're rural, consult the yellow pages for your nearest metro area.

I occasionally have to dog sit a border collie. Since I don't have stock, she gets lessons in agility training. We do weave poles and tunnels in the back yard. If we had a closer fly ball group, I'd get her working on that. You could do a google search (www.google.com) on agility or fly ball if you're interested in sports.

Added: I've *never* had a problem with this animal since we've started agility. Anyone, she'll have their yard torn up by the second day. She normally gets to run sheep and goats.

Quoting myself...

Shep-Lab is a pretty good mix. There is no limit what you can do, if you have the time, energy and resources to train this dog. It's really YOU that get trained, BTW.

Are you ready?
Rebecca................I have been involved with search and rescue work with one of our Belgians for a few years and also teach obedience. SAR work is very rewarding, but it definitely takes a lot of time and dedication. You really need to train with your dog for it to work and to coniually develop the bond between you two. Not all dogs are cut out to do it and it can take up to 1-2 years to get the dog properly trained. Some states require that a dog be tested before they are allowed on any searches. If your dog has lots of "play" drive and a bond with you then that is a start. I could go on with this, but it might take many replies :D

please reply,,,

he is so sharp and agile, and i am feeling so guilty about not training him...
he is bored and has been abused...trying to think about what had happened to him,
i think he, being a lab mix chewed big dog style...lol
someone beat him with a belt though, it killed me seing him shiver when a belt was shown last week...
from what i understand, labs have extended chewing puppyhoods,

Check out the local Shutzhund clubs. They do search & rescue, obedience, defense work. Don't know if they let you part out what you want to do.
