Pancakes or French Toast but OOPS, out of syrup?

ainitfunny

Saved, to glorify God.
I made French toast for the kids when they were little and there was Just Enuff pancake syrup for THEM. So mom of course, rooted around in the fridge for something to put on HER french toast. Found some left over SOUR CREAMfrom when we had baked potatoes the previous night and some WELCHE'S GRAPE JAM. So, I lobbed a couple heaping tablespoons of the grape jam into the sour cream and mixed till smooth and topped the french toast with it.

IT WAS DELICIOUS, AND THE KID'S DECIDED I HAD SAVED THE "GOOD STUFF" FOR ME AND WANTED MY TOPPING!

Hi ainitfunny,
That really sounds good. I'm not a maple syrup fan so I mix about 3 parts jam (blackberry) to 1 part karo syrup and nuke it for about 1 minute till liquid and smooth and it makes a really good syrup.

Some members of my family like straight Karo syrup on pancakes and French Toast. Sour cream works with almost all jams and jellies; and, believe it or not, is even good with grilled cheese sandwiches. That is my version of a poor man's Monte Cristo sandwich.

Almost any jelly, heated in a saucepan with a very small amount of water will make a fruit syrup. The syrup from canned peaches works, too.

Dark Karo straight is my absolute favorite, but I remember Mom often making syrup for our pancakes--with either brown sugar and water boiled down or white sugar and water boiled down. You bring it to a full boil then turn heat off before you think it is thick enough, as it will be thicker than you think it is every time. Only takes couple of minutes and it's good stuff!
