Pentagon Releases Bush's Guard Records

WASHINGTON - The Pentagon (news - web sites) on Friday released payroll records from President Bush (news - web sites)'s 1972 service in the Alabama National Guard, saying its earlier contention the records were destroyed was an "inadvertent oversight."

The records cover July through September of 1972, when Bush was working as a campaign volunteer in Alabama. The future president had been transferred from the Texas Air National Guard to the Alabama unit so he could stay in Alabama.

The release came days before Democrats began their national convention in Boston to officially nominate Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites) as their presidential candidate.

Democrats have sought to contrast Bush's National Guard service with Kerry's Vietnam War record. Kerry enlisted in the Navy, volunteered for combat in Vietnam and earned several medals including a Silver Star, a Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts. After returning from Vietnam, Kerry became a prominent anti-war activist.

The Associated Press had asked a federal judge July 16 to order the Pentagon to quickly turn over a copy of the pay records. The AP had sued under the Freedom of Information Act to obtain the records from a state library records center in Texas.

Records of Bush's National Guard service released previously did not conclusively show whether Bush fulfilled his service requirements in 1972 and 1973, during the Vietnam War.

Bush had transferred to an Alabama National Guard unit while he worked on the U.S. Senate campaign of Republican Winton Blount, a family friend.

The Pentagon had said that the payroll records for that time period had been inadvertently destroyed.

In a letter to The Associated Press Friday, Pentagon freedom of information chief C.Y. Talbot said the records couldn't be found earlier because officials were using the wrong index number.

The Associated Press was evaluating the documents.

Did Kerry's wounds really qualify him for those purple hearts?

I read an article a while back in my local paper (an interview of someone who served with him) that stated that one of them only required a band-aid.

Oh c'mon

Purple hearts aren't awarded for presidential campaign assistance, they are Given for being in a theater of Battle. I don't care if it was a band-aid it's the location. Course getting your tongue caught up some-ones ass doesn't count when it's at home. Especially if that at home is a contrived conscientious objector role. Wake up Cabal I'm sure you can figure out the difference. Then maybe you would rather back a chicken who doesn't mind letting others to be shot at while your in a presidential campaign. Oh wow dejavu he's doing again, almost forgot.

RE: Purple Heart. You get your 'ticket punched' at the Aid Station, you get the medal. That is all that is required.

WWII was full of stories about troops who got the PH after cutting themselves badly enough with their bayonet, paring knife etc that they had to be bandaged up, got their ticket punched and were amazed later to get the PH.

So Kerry's were legit. And I guess he knew about the deal that if you got enough, you could go home early. So he played the game.

Huh?

Back a chicken who doesn't mind letting others get shot at while campaigning?
Just what in the hell is Bush supposed to do... don some Kevlar and hit the front lines heading the charge?
Didn't Kerry submit his own paperwork for his Purple Hearts?
And no, I'm not knocking his military service... just the way he skirted out of there after receiving 3 minor flesh wounds... I wonder how many Vietnam vets suffered much worse than band-aid wounds in the bush and stayed there and fought alongside their fellow soldiers insteading of taking the first flight out?
Oh yeah, refresh my memory, which branch of the service did Clinton serve in? Where are his payroll records? :shr:

You can refuse the Purple Heart...many did...some didn't...some did their own paperwork to get them...many didn't...
Most wore them as a badge of honor signifying duty to their country... some used them as an excuse to leave and later as a form of protest when throwing them over fences...
If they meant so much to him in Vietnam that he did all the paperwork to get them, why did they mean so little when he threw them away? Oh wait... he didn't really throw them away, just the ribbons... no, wait that wasn't right either... they weren't his at all... they were someone else's...

Frankly, I was surprised at the time that they found any records. And I am not surprised that they should suddenly find some more.

The efficiency of government is well known.

Right.

BTW, I was told that my service records are not available..burned up in a fire somewhere.

Bet they would reappear if I ran for Pres.

inefficiency, Troke?

they were subsequently located after a FOIA request from AP?

the pentagon was threatened so they produced. all they needed to do was stop lying and put somebody in charge.
