MOSCOW (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke with President Donald Trump on Sunday to thank him for information that Putin said helped Russia foil terrorist attacks over the New Year’s holiday, the Kremlin said.
Putin thanked Trump “for information transmitted through the special services that helped prevent the completion of terrorist acts in Russia,” the Kremlin said in a brief statement posted on its website.
Based on the U.S. information, the Russian security forces detained two Russians suspected of preparing to carry out terrorist acts in St. Petersburg during the upcoming holiday, state news agency Tass reported, citing the Federal Security Service.
The security service said it obtained the information from its “American partners.” It said it seized material from the suspects that confirms they were preparing terrorist acts, with no further details.
There was no immediate comment from the White House.

Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump have talked on the phone, with the Russian president thanking his US counterpart for sharing intelligence that allowed terrorist attacks to be prevented in Russia, the Kremlin said.
The Federal Security Service later confirmed that the information provided by their US counterparts led to the arrest of two Russian citizens who planned terrorist attacks at public places in St. Petersburg during New Year’s celebrations.
The Kremlin statement didn't give more details besides mentioning that a “range of issues of mutual interest” was discussed during the conversation initiated by Moscow and that the two leaders agreed to maintain bilateral cooperation in the fight against terrorism.

In October, the head of FSB, Aleksandr Bortnikov, revealed that contacts between the security agencies of the two countries have intensified recently, in cybersecurity and other areas. He said then that the US provided information about people who had been planning terrorist attacks in Russia.

Two years ago, Washington warned Moscow about a planned bombing at one of the main cathedrals in St. Petersburg, while Russia actively assisted the US investigation into the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013.

Although “sometimes politics gets in the way of helping each other out,” but not when the lives of innocent civilians are at stake, Chris Phillips, former Head of the UK's National Counter Terrorism Security Office, commented on the exchange.

"We live in such an interconnected world that the intelligence sources that the US has obviously got are also dealing with people that are planning incidents in St Petersburg,” he told RT.

I still think there is more common among our peoples than weapons aimed at each other.

Wars are a construct of governments, at this point in history. Led by the US. The peoples would all be happy to just get along and live a normal life without war....but govs like the money, and care less about the peeps. Sad reality.

Who are the new Russian super weapons allegedly pointed at, according to Russian sources? Could they have more than one western MSM "advertised/stated" purpose?

russia does not want a war with the US, but has much to gain by keeping a strong 'bear' stance. Those in politics in the US and russia know that russia is no longer a threat. They have more in common with the US than about any of our enemies. Most russians are just like canadians. self-reliance, hockey and whiskey...errr..vodka. I like russians more than about 80% of the planet..

I agree fully AlfaMan. Russia will become an open ally of ours especially against terrorist attacks. They don't want war with us but they make no bones about looking out for themselves. Neither do we with President Trump.

Nothing has been stated as to what country the Avangards are targeting. But, and you may laugh, I think the target is China.
No matter the MSM showing Winnie the Xi and Putin shaking hands and doing this and doing that-the Russians have an overbearing fear of the Chinese. Always have and always will. The border clashes in 1969 were in effect opening battles in a third world war until cooler heads prevailed. Plus the Silk and Road projects debt enslaving countries around the world don't sit well with the Russians. Some of China's customers were formerly in the Russian political orbit.
It may take the Avangard 30 minutes to reach anywhere on the planet; just think how long one of these would take to turn Beijing into dust? What, a minute or less? A dependable first strike capability against the US is always part of Russia's gameplan-but being able to literally sucker punch the Chinese back into the 14th century would be even more attractive to them.
Just a thought.
