It seems like everyone has lost their mind and wants a war, from the Middle East to the Far East. Is there something in the water? Or is it "Miranda" only in reverse?

"Miranda" is a reference to Firefly and Serenity.

My understanding is that demographics is a prime, if not only, motivator.

Everyone is losing their warm bodies, and facing that they need to position the best as they can for the new reality, and that often involves changing boundaries, whilest they still can.
Others are realizing that luring enemies and frienamies into wars of attrition help put THEM in better footing for the shifting balance of power that is occurring.

Still others even suggest that after a bit of a bumpy road as we shift from unipolar to a multipolar reality, the US will still come out as one of the best positioned due to having the demographics, increased renewed industrial capacity and raw goods and trade partners in the closest proximity.

That's all remedial short bus stuff though, and I'd hesitate to offer an opinion outta my nether regions re: what is really going on.

There is also a need to add the domestic situations into the explanation, and no explainer would be judged complete if someone didn't sneak the forbodden topic of RELIGION into the mix...

US personnel suffer minor injuries in Iraq base attack: U.S. official

By Phil Stewart and Timour Azhari
January 20, 2024 3:10 PM PST Updated an hour ago

WASHINGTON/BAGHDAD, Jan 20 (Reuters) - U.S. personnel suffered minor injuries and a member of Iraq's security forces was wounded in an attack on Iraq's Ain al-Asad air base on Saturday, a U.S. official said on Saturday, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The U.S. military's Central Command said in a statement that the base was hit by multiple ballistic missiles and rockets fired by Iranian-backed militants from inside Iraq. The statement did not confirm the extent of any U.S. injuries but said personnel were being evaluated for traumatic brain injury.

The U.S. military's assessment was more severe than initial accounts from security sources in Iraq, who, along with an Iraqi government source, had only reported rocket fire against the base.

Offering a sense of the scale of the attack, Central Command said most of the missiles were intercepted though others hit the base.

"Damage assessments are ongoing," Central Command said, adding the attack took place at 1830 in Iraq (1530 GMT).

"At least one Iraqi service member was wounded."

Since the Israel-Hamas war began in October, the U.S. military has come under attack at least 58 times in Iraq and another 83 times in Syria by Iran-backed militants, usually with a mix of rockets and one-way attack drones.

The militants are seeking to impose a cost on the United States for its support of Israel against Iran-backed Palestinian militant group Hamas.

The U.S. has 900 troops in Syria and 2,500 in Iraq on a mission to advise and assist local forces trying to prevent a resurgence of Islamic State, which in 2014 seized large parts of both countries before being defeated.

Iraq is deeply concerned about becoming a battleground between the United States, Israel and Iran.

Iraq's Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani's office announced moves to evict U.S. forces following a U.S. drone strike in Baghdad that was condemned by the government. The Pentagon said the strike killed a militia leader responsible for recent attacks on U.S. personnel.

The Pentagon said it has not been formally notified of any plans to end the U.S. troop presence in the country, and says its troops are deployed to Iraq at the invitation of the government in Baghdad.

Iran on Monday struck Erbil, the capital of Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan region, with ballistic missiles in what it said was an attack on an Israeli spy headquarters -- claims denied by Iraqi and Iraqi Kurdish officials.

Iranian-backed Militants Attack Al-Assad Airbase, Iraq

At approximately 6:30 p.m. (Baghdad time) time Jan. 20, multiple ballistic missiles and rockets were launched by Iranian-backed militants in Western Iraq targeting al-Assad Airbase. Most of the missiles were intercepted by the base’s air defense systems while others impacted on the base. Damage assessments are ongoing. A number of U.S. personnel are undergoing evaluation for traumatic brain injuries. At least one Iraqi service member was wounded.

U.S. personnel treated for injuries after Iraqi militia salvos hit air base

David R. Sands

American personnel in Iraq suffered minor injuries and an Iraqi security officer was wounded in the latest attack by Iraqi militias on the Ain al-Asad air base, according to reports.

The Pentagon’s Central Command said Saturday in a statement that the base had come under fire from multiple ballistic missiles and rockets launched from inside Iraq, believed to have been fired by Shiite militias with close ties to Iran.

The statement said that U.S. personnel were being evaluated for traumatic brain injury.

Along with other Iran-allied forces across the region, the Iraqi militias, which are loosely aligned under Iraq’s overall military, have stepped up attacks on U.S. forces stationed in Iraq in the wake of the Israeli-Hamas fighting that broke out in Gaza after Oct. 7.

The Pentagon has kept deployments in Iraq and neighboring Syria, saying they are needed to combat Islamic State fighters still operating in the region.

But the forces have become both a target and a political headache, exacerbated by the tensions generated by the Gaza war. Since the Israel-Hamas war began, the U.S. military has come under attack at least 58 times in Iraq and 83 times in Syria by Iran-backed militants, the Reuters news service reported Sunday.

Iraqi lawmakers have also stepped up a campaign to demand U.S. forces leave the country after a U.S. drone strike on Jan. 4 killed a senior militia leader in Baghdad whom U.S. officials said was responsible for planning attacks on American forces.

Saturday’s missile salvo also came after a suspected Israeli airstrike killed five senior Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps officers in Damascus on Friday, with Tehran vowing to avenge the attack.

The U.S. Central Command said in a Saturday statement on social media that more of the missiles had been intercepted.

“Damage assessments are ongoing,” the statement added.

Our .gov overlords are working overtime to not admit that they've bumbled us and the world into WWIII. Saying that TBI's are "minor injuries" but an Iraqi soldier was wounded is straight Orwellian doublespeak. If any of our troops are mortally wounded, expect them to be flown out immediately so that their death can be counted in another country, just like nobody ever dies at Disneyworld, they wait to pronounce them until they are off property.

We are well and duly F'ed as a nation, and we probably deserve it for not undoing the stolen election of 2020.

It has now been 24 Hours since U.S. Forces at Al-Asad Air Base in Western Iraq were Attacked by Iranian-Backed Groups with Rockets and Ballistic Missiles, Crossing at least 1 “Red Line” set by the Biden Administration against these Groups, and causing at least 2 American Servicemembers to be Injured; however, despite this we have yet to see any kind of Response against these Groups or the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran who is Supporting and Aiding these Attacks.

Yes, we've been watching to see if we could find them hiding the death and injury tolls in other theatre tallies; that is part of the reason we looked so closely at the SEALS unfortunate loss.

I would disagree with you re: the characterization of "bumbling us into ww3" for one, I'm convinced it started long ago, and more importantly, I remain convinced it was a deliberate escalation undertaken with maliciousness of forethought, and that no "bumbling" was involved.

Dead is dead though, eh?
So guess nothing really matters, either way, unless one is wedded to the truth and accuracy as a matter of course.

Iran-backed militias attack U.S. forces in western Iraq | FDD's Long War Journal
Joe Truzman & Bill Roggio
3–4 minutes

Iraqi militias backed by Iran launched a barrage of ballistic missiles and rockets targeting Ain al-Assad airbase in western Iraq on Saturday evening. The Iranian-backed Iraqi militias have targeted U.S. forces with ballistic missiles since they have escalated attacks on U.S. forces in Iraq.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that the base’s air defense system intercepted most of the rockets, but some still managed to impact the area. As a result of the attack, an undisclosed number of U.S. personnel are being evaluated for traumatic brain injuries, and at least one Iraqi service member was injured.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a coalition of militias and front organizations supported by Iran claimed responsibility for the attack on Ain al-Assad.

In a statement, they asserted that the “Mujahideen of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq attacked the occupied Ain al-Asad base in western Iraq with a missile salvo.”

Reuters has reported that there have been over 140 attacks on American positions in Iraq and Syria since the beginning of the Hamas-Israel conflict on October 7. This recent strike on Ain al-Assad appears to be one of the most significant assaults on American troops since the escalation of hostilities. However, it is not the first time that Iraqi militias have fired a ballistic missile against American positions in the region.

On Nov. 6, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq published a statement warning that a “medium-range ballistic missile of the Aqsa-1 model” had entered service and was used against American positions in Iraq and Syria.

The Aqsa-1 missile, from the Islamic Resistance

Later on Nov. 21, 2023, Iranian-backed Iraqi militias fired a ballistic missile at Ain al-Assad airbase. In response, the U.S. military launched attacks on two sites south of Baghdad, resulting in the deaths of eight Hezbollah Brigades fighters, according to the militias.

Tehran is employing its extensive network of proxies and clients across the region to impose consequences on the United States due to its backing of Israel. The strategy used involves striking American positions in the region and attempting to impose a military blockade on the Red Sea via the Houthis based in Yemen. By pursuing this approach, Iran aims to exert pressure on the international community to compel Israel to accept a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, which is vital for the survival of Hamas, a crucial regional ally.
