Russia reassures Israel over Iran nuclear deal

MOSCOW

Russian President Vladimir Putin told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday that the deal on Iran's nuclear program would improve security in the Middle East and guaranteed that Tehran would not acquire nuclear arms.

Israel plans to lobby the U.S. Congress not to approve the agreement clinched between Iran and world powers in Vienna earlier this month after more than a decade of negotiations.

Under the deal, the United States, European Union and United Nations will lift sanctions against Iran in exchange for Tehran agreeing to long-term curbs on its nuclear program that the West and Israel have feared was aimed at creating a nuclear bomb.

Putin told Netanyahu the deal included "solid guarantees that the Iranian nuclear program will be exclusively peaceful" and that implementing it would "positively impact the security and stability of the Middle East", according to a Kremlin statement.

The Iranian negotiators who worked to put together the deal still have to sell the deal to the mullahs that have the last word on everything in Iran. Netanyahu's opposition to the deal is their best tool for convincing the mullahs that it's a good deal for Iran.

And I'm just delighted.... I'm sure Israel now has nothing to worry about since Russia has reassured them. Russia has such a wonderful history of top-notch behavior in the ME. And of course, WE wouldn't do anything to put them in danger, either. Of course, not. All those Israelis can sleep well at night now. Until the sky lights up and their land is a glass parking lot.

I would rather trust Putin's word to guarantee Israel's safety and security than to trust Obama's word on it.

Agree.

Also it's been Russia that's been supplying Iran with materials it needed in its nuclear program so would be the ones most likely to know what Iran is up to and the ones who could put the most stipulations on Iran when it delivers that infrastructure. I'd take Putin's assurance with a lot more weight than I would 0bama's. But at the end of the day, I wouldn't rely on anyone...
