Southgate— Officials with Southgate Community Schools say a suspected flu outbreak in one elementary building has more than half of its students and two staff members out today.

District Superintendent Nancy Nagle said eight students at Allen Elementary School came down with flu-like symptoms late Thursday. As a result, 181 of the school's 325 students in grades K-5 called in sick Friday. Nagle said some have also come down with the illness, while others were kept home as a precaution.

Two of the building's 16 staff members have also come down with the sickness, she added.

To combat the problem, custodians at the school on McCann have been sanitizing the building since Thursday.

Nagle said officials believe the students have come down with a flu virus that runs its course within 48 hours. Today, a few additional students were sent home after coming down with the symptoms.

"It's so unusual," she said. "I've been here 13 years, and it's never happened in any other buildings."

Nagle said so far reports of the illness have been confined to the Allen building.

The school's nurse will report the incident to the Wayne County Health Department, Nagle said.
