"smelly cat"

ok, i thought this was a tad humorous at first, but it is really not funny anymore. I adopted a 12 week old kitten last month. She is now 16 weeks, i had her spayed and declawed last week, and i have noticed in the last week since i got her back, that she has terrible gas! to the point that it is noticeable in the house....YUCK! I had 2 other cats for 17 and 15 years, the 15 year old died last month, and they NEVER ......tooted, farted, whatever.....

could this just be her surgery, or her diet? or am i destined to live with her incessant flatulence?

ok, when you all are done laughing at me, please let me know if any of you have ever encountered this, and what i may try.

your expedience for her flatulence challenge is most appreciated!

Sounds like her intestinal flora is messed up. But it could be something more serious. I think I'd call the vet and ask about that one. If it is only gas, they can probably recommend something. ugh, you poor thing!

thanks for the reply, Firedance. I take her Friday morning to get her stitches out. I will definately mention it. She is just as sweet as can be, but how she can smell so foul is beyond me. I never knew cats even did that....seriously!

I give up.
I had a cat who farted. He'd sit there all innocent too! "Who, ME?"

It could also be the diet. Ask your vet. A spritz of air freshener would help at "those" times. You love her anyway.

Where did all our cat experts go? Melodi should be able to chime in here. IF she wasn't doing it before you took her to be spayed, I would think it has something to do with the surgery (meds/food at the vets - something that would have changed). I assume she's showing no other symptoms since you didn't mention it. Throw the cat out since it smells. You can't have that! (I'm teasing.)

There MUST be something on the internet - it knows all, sees all. Heh, call your friendly research librarian and see if they can find something for you. They're an under utilized source! You can also find the Merck Manual Vet edition online. Let us know what you find out. ARE there probiotics for cats? We need a gas-bomb smilie!

Is she due for worming? Please do not try to do it yourself. Ask the vet when you go for your next visit. Yeah. It can be the anesthesia metabolizing out of her body. Go get some of that fresh wheat grass that grocery stores sell in the little 4 inch pot. If her stomach is up-set she will eat it down and gas will be gone. Cats eat grass too! :sht:

UPDATE ON CAT

Thanks for all of the replies here! Turns out, the gas must have been from the anesthetic because her little problem seems to have subsided significantly!

There is one odd thing about her though that I discovered just tonight........she has two sets of upper "fangs". Is that normal, or is it her breed? Or, do kittens lose one set of fangs and the second ones become her adult fangs? It is really weird looking and I have never seen a cat with two sets! Does anyone know? She is a domestic short hair, but the vet told me she definately has strong Siamese in her.

Thanks! You all are the best!

The anesthetic as well as pain meds can cause constipation. Perhaps that's what it was.

Sorry I didn't see this thread when it counted. I'm glad all is well now. :)

:lkick: I know it was really *rank* but you have to admit that it IS funny!
One of our dogs has gas sometimes and it goes like this.
Dog farts.
Dog turns head and sniffs tentatively.
Dog looks sick. :shkr:
Dog jumps up and leaves room.

Honestly. :lkick:
