Nancy was bored... mind-numbingly bored. She had been double digging the new spud bed for days and already broken the shaft of one old spade and been beaten for it. The steep mountain field was full of rocks, but if they were going to get any crops next year, the new beds had to be dug deep and the manure from their steeds mixed in and allowed to mellow over the winter. A rider had come in fast about two hours ago and her father, the new community doctor, had ridden out with him almost immediately. Her new stepmother, Mrs. Marie Hyde, had followed him out the door and then stood as if pasted to the upright. She wondered if the woman was crying again. In the fortnight since the two had been hand-fasted, Nancy had yet to see Marie do even a lick of work. Certainly this back of beyond hill farm was not likely where the fancy City girl had thought she would end up when she had married a doctor… hell it hadn’t been where Nancy had expected to end up either. But crying wouldn’t get the house cleaned, the dinner cooked, or the potato bed dug, and Nancy had learned young that her father was as fast with his fists as he was on his horse. She would have told Marie that but the woman had been told she was a servant and so treated her as such. Having seen the pattern before, Nancy knew that Marie’s honeymoon would soon come to an end, and she would learn the hard way about just who the charismatic Dr. Hyde was.

Jimmy arrived home from work and changed into his old work clothes. He got a drink of water and walked hurriedly out to his garden, grabbing his spade on the way out. He would have to work fast to finish before he ran out of daylight. He had to loosen the dirt deep enough to prepare it for planting spuds. Thankfully he only needed to do two fairly short rows.

His steed, Ace, provided much of the manure for his garden. Ace wasn’t very fast, be he was strong and built stout. He had used Ace to plow his garden plot since he was still waiting on parts for his old tractor. With all of the shipping issues, imported goods such as the ones he need to fix the tractor only trickled in slowly. The parts had a steep increase in price too.

Finishing up, he went into the house to change out of the dirty clothes and shower. He was tired and hungry as he had fasted since yesterday. He was spending two days in prayer and fasting, searching for a resolution of problems he was having at work. Jimmy knew that there were going to be staffing cuts in the near future, and his job might be one of them.

As he headed toward bed, his phone rang. It was his sister, Lili, calling to let him know that she had a new phone number. She had changed cell phone providers and had been given a new number. He wrote her new number on the sticky notepad on his kitchen table. After they finished their conversation, he pasted the note on his small whiteboard and also updated her in his phone contacts.

Marissa climbed the last steep hill to the school.

Sweat covering her frail body in the late spring morning.

She had tried to walk fast to the school where the monthly food distribution was being held. Being on time was mandatory.

But having fasted for the last three days left her further weakened.

She longed to go to the creek and to seek out a deep pool of water to cool off in.

As she walked she glanced to the spud fields being planted by young teens using a spade they brought from their homes.

Those with out a spade used rough splintered sticks.

The overseer was riding a huge brown steed. The overseer was shouting derogatory slurs and telling the boys to work fast or they would not get any the mid day meal.

Already gaunt none of the boys wanted to miss a meal of the watery stew minus any type of meat. Each boy had to bring one piece of vegetable to add to the communal meal pot.

The overseer could deny any of them the meal. And he had in the past many a time. He would bring the excess home to feed his personal indentured servants.

Marissa arrived at the school and signed in. Her short dark black hair was wet with sweat and pasted to her skull. She sat in the glaring heat of the sun waiting to be called to get her family’s allotment.

Her chip was scanned and the tired man at the intake table said, “Citizen 2987450 status green two boxes of nutrition wafers for five in Housing Unit 17B. Reminder Citizen 2987450 mandatory service to commence 12 October 2027. Housing Unit 17 B designated recipient change mandated by 01 October 2027.

Marissa picked up the two boxes of wafers the size of shoe boxes. She turned away from the intake table, tears flowing from her eyes. She is conscripted and next month a new chapter of her life would take her from her young siblings.

She walked home and as the sun’s brightness waned she thought about how she could flee the hell she lived in.

With a grimace pasted on his leathery face & armed with his pointed spade, Larry deliberately & not very fast, drove his Arctic Cat diesel steed down the steep bank to the deep pond, where he hoped to spud in the hole to catch the char, his favourite fish which he would broil over a fire. Having fasted the night before as he was snowbound in his shelter during the blizzard, he really anticipated the hot fishy breakfast.

Part of that is that we are all "mature" enough that we grew up still using our imaginations instead of staring at a screen. I was a free range kid!

I also loved listening to classic radio programs and drama such as CBS Radio Mystery Theater. Many of these are still available for download, often free. All of these required you to fill in a lot of blanks with your own imagination. A good library of these might be a good thing for entertainment while sheltering during a SHTF event if you were able to maintain the power and equipment required to listen to them. You wouldn't need a light on for listening either, like you would for reading.
