Knitting Time to finish UFOs (Unfinished Objects) and get ready for colder weather

Well, on other threads, some of us have mentioned that "feel" of Fall in the air, and in Ireland, we've had wet and relatively chilly weather now for over a month. I expected to spend most of August as downtime because I was supposed to have most of my teeth removed (and get dentures) over four visits. That is still supposed to happen, but my friendly lady dentist got very sick (I don't know what), so my appointments were canceled. Now they may start on the 24th but will still run into September.

So, having skipped a spinning demo today at a local castle because I was supposed to be at the dentist, I decided it was time to look over my UFO - Unfinished Objects and try to sort some of the ones that were almost done and taking up space in bags and boxes. I know there are more of these scattered around, and a few of the super-old ones may end up in the bin if they are not worth frogging. But so far today, I had finished one pair of slipper/bed socks (thick socks made with worsted weight yarn and cables), one pair of knee socks that needed a toe, and a silly hat with wild-crazy yarn I got at the local yarn shop and started when we had our brief warm spell. It is wool but lightweight and smaller than most of my hats, so it should work for warmer weather (we seldom get above 70 here).

While looking for something else, I found mittens in a box that need thumbs, so I've got those ready to go for tomorrow. I also have a sweater I started in the Spring and put aside to order more yarn. For that one, I need to count my yoke stitches after the last decrease and find another kitty pattern (small) to put on it. I knit these sweaters from the bottom up (I'm not a fan of yoke sweaters from the top down, which seems to be the rage, I can see the point of cardigans without colorwork but not a yoke sweater). That one shouldn't take too long to finish (maybe a day or two if I get started).

In the meantime, I may cast on a pair of socks or something, so I have something I can just "knit" if that's what I feel like doing. Most of the stuff that turned into UFOs needed "fiddly work," which is what I call finishing. Like hems, elastics, toes, thumbs, etc.

Anyway, I don't feel we have to restrict this thread to knitting, but I thought I'd check to see if others are either catching up or starting on colder weather projects in between canning, gardening and other busy stuff for this time of year.

Well, I got everything done except for the mitten thumbs. I set those aside to start a Wonderful Wallaby Sweater (Cottage Creations Hoodie). My first ones have gone AWOL (possibly gone if Nightwolf borrowed them) so I need another one before the weather changes.

I've been wondering if you are okay, just haven't seen any posts from you lately (I could have missed them, I was in jail for a week). Praying for your dental situation and your work is beautiful.

I've been making two or three posts a day this week rather than my usual mega-count. That is partly from working on the UFOs and listening to podcasts and partly because some of the board discussions got heated, and I didn't feel like joining the fray.

I had also expected to be recovering from tooth extractions, so I planned a slow week, but my Dentist is still out sick. So now that is on to start late next week. It isn't severe, but they are doing it over four visits (taking out most of my teeth to replace them with dentures). Thankfully I had no grand plans for September either, though I did make sure not to make any plans for August.

And I totally understand not having time for needlework. If my kitchen was in better shape and we had the greenhouse up already this year, I'd probably be in the kitchen doing food preservation. I look at needlework in a rather traditional way. Despite what modern movies want you to think, in the past, when women (and some men) made most of their clothing, they were not all homespun grey and poor looking. They tended to be as decorated and well-made as possible since most people only had a couple of outfits.

Colors are bright in places like the Peruvian Highlands, where the ladies still spin, weave, and create clothing. Clothing is highly decorated and made to last. Most people have two outfits, one for every day, which is still pretty impressive, and a special one for Church and Weddings.

Working fibers and making clothing is just another daily task that women (and men to sell for the tourist trade) do all the time, often while doing something else. Spinning while walking to the market, sewing while watching the cooking pot, men making caps while selling their wares at the market or taking a break from fieldwork.

My mother and her three sisters made their clothes and they were beautiful inside and out, very talented. Although sewing well was common back in their day. I sewed my clothes for several years but didn't bother with making the inside beautiful. They also did needle crafting. They did it out of necesity and so did I.

Your work is beautiful. I need to get back into needlework, but theres no room for another iron in the fire.

I just shove one or two of the irons plumb out of the fire. I have feeding the Spirit as a priority in these troubled days. Larder is full and chores are done. All else can wait.

Time to stitch.

Made another bead order. Lots of tiny 15/0s in Czech and Delica. I am doing Gourd Stitch again. This is what set me off:

My pattern and colors are different to match my living room, but the lamps look the same. Straight base. The shades are lovely. I just walked in the local Thrift and there were two perfect table lamps sitting there, saying, "Take me, Bill Tyler- take me!" And, so I did.

These will get finished in 11/0 Charlotte Cuts which are more sparkly than their regular 11/0 smooth cousins.

I too, have Knitting to finish, and a Lapghan that, instead of regular Crochet, I stitched in Tunisian. Just have to sew the long panels together and it's a done puppy. It will look like this when I'm done:

Love seeing everyones work!!
I've got the third of three commission hats on the needles today. Handspun/knit from my sheeps fleece. And I also have a scarf on the little loom. Nothing fancy, just plain weave but i'm hoping it will be enough to help me breath outside in the cold and keep me from having bronchospasms.

Well I finished a couple things right before Christmas. Here are some socks - the first ones are actually sort of lime green, but the camera washed out the color (I tried editing the pic and got close). And the second ones are my 1st project with more than 1 color. Not sure I enjoyed the process but they look cool.
