On the night of April 14th, two significant and spectacular events will take place simultaneously, as Mars reaches its closest point to Earth while the Moon will be totally eclipsed. Slooh will present these events in real time, starting with coverage of Mars at 7 PM PDT / 10 PM EDT / 02 UTC (4/15) (International Times) from Slooh's telescopes off the west coast of Africa in the Canary Islands and transitioning to coverage of the Total Lunar Eclipse starting at 11 PM PDT / 2 AM EDT (4/15) / 06 UTC (4/15) (International Times) with live feeds from throughout North America.

My brain swells dangerously to think there could be EIGHT days (per the graphic above) in this week!

But to get back to the thread, I just walked outside to check the conditions and while it's very cloudy here in Portland (Oregon) the Moon was visible through a break. If I can keep my eyes open for another 30 minutes I'll wander out again to see what's what.

The link in the OP is working fine. There are live feeds available from across the entire U.S.

I like that there is live commentary starting now.

Very nice!

It's kind of creepy that the Earth's shadow isn't a smooth arc -- maybe the ancient belief that giant creatures in the sky are taking bites (well, nibbles) out of the Moon has some merit after all! (Actually, the non-smoothness of the arc is probably the surface of the Moon not being billiard ball smooth, but still ...)

I did go outside and see it with my own eyes. It looks like there's a break in the clouds for the next ten or fifteen minutes, if Portlanders want to hurry outside to take a look. But it's a bit chilly out there and I've seen eclipses before, so I don't plan to watch any more of it. I figure if the world ends I'll probably find out soon enough!

it's starting to look red now

I love the description of "all the earth's sunrises and all the earth's sunsets are like a giant wedding-ring of fire"

and it is this "wedding ring" encompassing the circle of the moon that makes her "blush" red.

The NASA site is staying with the moon only: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/nasa-msfc

I just WISH the original OP site (Slooh) would STAY with the picture of the MOON and quit putting up pictures of OTHER things.

I'm out in the California desert under a beautiful night sky and this moon looks like a tree ripened orange, ready for picking. So glad I got to see this!

It's cold(4 degrees) and the sky is clear here for a change. It's covered now, waiting for it peek out the other side.

I'm jealous!

It's cold (27F) and cloudy in SE WI.

Ewww! Sorry, RB! It's currently 73F here. I wish I had a good camera to capture this sky. There is a beautiful little star hanging out at about 5 o'clock from the moon. Then a little more distance out, at about the 1 o'clock position from the moon, a brilliant planet. So gorgeous!

It was a beautiful site as many of us stood on the beach in Kapa'a, Kauai.

There were flights taking off for the mainland down south at the airport in Lihu'e and I was thinking about the pilots seeing the blood red moon from there cockpit windows. What a site that must have been for them! V

Watched the moon come up, bright and pretty, about an hour before the eclipse it clouded over. Stupid clouds.

AWESOME!!

These photos were taken in succession of the Total Lunar Eclipse on April 15, 2014. The photos are unedited, and posted as taken directly from the camera. The anomalies in the photos are a result of the emerging Light on the Moon when it was waning, and it just happened. It was some kind of reflection through my telescope, but it ended up being pretty cool especially given the fact that I was listening to Dark Side of the Moon while capturing the images. The prism effect is natural from the photos, and I have done nothing to edit them whatsoever. Sometimes the Universe just shows you something you're completely unprepared for, this was one of those times. Love and Light to all! SWP
